Over the Valentine’s Day weekend, Grammy-nominated and JUNO Award-winning songwriter Rose Cousins’ shared her cover of Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me)” along with a video for the track.

“My sister and I made up routines to a fair number of pop songs when we were kids and "I Wanna Dance with Somebody" was at the top of the list,” says Cousins. “I know my catalogue leans melancholy but I have a true love for pop music and a deep sentimentality for the hits of the late 80's and Queen Whitney. This past year has been like no other in revealing who we are when we are alone, how we take care of each other when we can't be together. The song feels fitting for the time and for my first collaboration with the amazing pop writer, producer and engineer, Robyn Dell'Unto who I've known since 2010. She's incredible and I loved making this track with her. Let's dance."

Out now via Outside Music, Cousins’ latest album Bravado is a record for those who struggle with loneliness and those wishing they had more time alone - for those who struggle to connect with others, or even to connect with their true selves. “I think about how we’re so disconnected,” says Cousins. “I get sucked into my phone and forget to go for a walk because of this sense of obligation I have that convinces me to get as much work done as possible. We’re missing what’s actually happening. I’ve been thinking about how we must be getting close to a breaking point.”

Cousins’ previous album, Natural Conclusion, received notable acclaim, including a nomination for a 2018 Grammy Award, a nomination for Songwriter of the Year award at the 2018 JUNO Awards and three wins at the East Coast Music Awards. Cousins also writes for film and TV and her songs have appeared on the programs “Grey’s Anatomy”, “Supergirl”, “Reign” and “Nashville” among others. She has shared stages with songwriters such as Patty Griffin, Shawn Colvin, Lori McKenna, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden and Ron Sexsmith.

“FRENCH COUNTRYSIDE” ON CRITICALLY ACCLAIMED SOLO ALBUM TO LOVE IS TO LIVE, OUT NOW VIA ARTS & CRAFTS

DEBUT NOVEL CRIMES AGAINST LOVE MEMORIES (C.A.L.M.) OUT NOW

"Beth’s debut solo album, To Love Is To Live, is a cathartic blast of beauty and darkness that exemplifies everything you would expect from this dynamic visionary." - Northern Transmissions

“...fuelled by an invigorating conviction and helmed by an artist with the gravitational pull to make it all align.” Exclaim!

“Nothing is out of bounds on ‘TO LOVE IS TO LIVE’, a timelessly raw and real ride through this thing called life.” - NME 4*

"’To Love Is To Live’ is a restless album that thrives on contrast: from delicate piano ballads to thrashing metal…Beth’s ability to glide between vulnerability and intimidation is unnerving, and adds more shades of grey to a performer who’s previously operated in black and white." - Observer 4*

Songwriter, singer, and author Jehnny Beth has released the emotionally stirring video for her vulnerable new single “French Countryside”. The raw and haunting video was directed by Johnny Hostile and filmed at their studio in France. The track, written with Romy Madley Croft and Johnny Hostile, is taken from her critically-acclaimed debut solo album To Love Is To Live, which came out last year via Arts & Crafts.

‘This is the song that caused me the most issues. Up until the last week of mixing we didn’t have a version I was happy with, but I am very proud of it now. I almost didn’t put it on the record because it is so close to the bone it almost feels too self indulgent, but it was my intention to write a song that felt more vulnerable than anything I had ever written before’ Jehnny said of the track. ‘Romy was a huge influence for me to be able to do that. It’s a promise song, I wrote the verses on a plane as I was convinced it was going to crash. I was making promises to myself about what I was going to do differently if I survived. Death has been very present in my mind during the process of writing this record. It all started around Bowie’s death.’

Romy adds, “She played me the beginning lines and they were so instantly visual and different to anything I'd heard her say before, it was instantly a beautiful place to write from and explore.” She continues “It felt like her guard was dropping for a moment and she was inviting the listener in to get to know her vulnerable side, but with a sense that this invitation wouldn't last for very long. Hearing the album version made me cry because it felt like it was my friend Camille, as I know her, a window behind the Jehnny Beth that the world sees”

To Love Is To Live was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Paris, and features a number of collaborators, including producers Flood, Atticus Ross, and longtime co-creator Johnny Hostile. It also features guest turns from The xx’s Romy Madley Croft, actor Cillian Murphy, and IDLES’ Joe Talbot.

Jehnny also released her debut collection of short stories, Crimes Against Love Memories (C.A.L.M), alongside a limited edition art book of photographs taken by Johnny Hostile on 9th July 2020 via White Rabbit. Both books are designed by Brian Roettinger from Willo Perron studio. A manifesto in the form of erotic monologues and dialogues, set to arouse and enlighten, Beth’s stories are punctuated by Hostile’s intimate photographs: they are the seeds from which her stories grew.

“...a lemonade-and-hammock number from Summersets, ...a wedding vow or something for shared whispers in the dark. The Globe and Mail ( on “never love another”)

“...a melancholic reminder of far off travels, calmingly reassured by Mattson and Sowka’s charming vocal and guitar melodies. It’s easy on the ears, and easier on the heart." - Dusty Organ ( on “anywhere you go”)

Today, summersets, the duo of Kalle Mattson and Andrew Sowka, are sharing their first new music of 2021. “afterthought” is “another new chapter for us as a band, but also for the two fictional characters we chronicled in our debut EP, small town saturday,” says Mattson. “Each verse flips perspective from each character as their relationship seemingly comes to an end, a car crashes, and they both run through their regrets.”

“afterthought” was once again produced by long time collaborator Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans), mixed by Dan Ledwell (Jenn Grant) and featuring strings from Kinley Dowling (Hey Rosetta).

The 29-year old Mattson first gained public attention by writing the Polaris Music Prize nominated 2014 album Someday, The Moon Will Be Gold, that dealt with the death of his mother who passed when he was 16 years old. It was during the recording and touring of that album that Mattson and Sowka began their longtime musical collaboration. “The whole summersets project came from a place of desperation and inspiration. After my last solo album, I felt so beaten down by the music industry, but once Andrew and I began writing and singing these songs together I was so energized by the process, making music was fun again.”

This project is both the musical start for Sowka and Mattson and also the start of a multi-part story to be told over the course of a larger collection of songs. As the two sing on “More Less” from small town saturday, ‘Some nights when I remember the two of us way back when, cigarettes and soft Septembers, the more beginning the less we end’.
