Today, Ariel is also sharing the lyric video for album track “It’s You”, a song that “focuses on the type of person that refuses to see all the bad signs of a partner,” says Ariel. “Despite how badly you can be treated by someone, sometimes we refuse to see ourselves being with anyone else.”

MORE ABOUT HEADWAY

Ariel Posen's music occupies the space between genres. It's a rootsy sound that nods to his influences — heartland rock & roll, electrified Americana, blue-eyed soul, R&B, Beatles-inspired pop — while still moving forward, pushing Posen into territory that's uniquely his own. He turns a new corner with Headway, a solo album that finds the songwriter taking stock of his personal and musical progress.

Posen began recording Headway in December 2019, one week after wrapping up an international tour in support of his acclaimed debut, How Long. He'd been on the road for a year and a half, playing shows across the U.K., Europe, America, and his native Canada. Along the way, Posen had received standing ovations not only from his audiences, but also from outlets like Rolling Stone, who dubbed him "a modern-day guitar hero," Music Radar listing him as a fan voted top 10 rock guitarist of the year and the Western Canadian Music Awards who nominated him for Breakout Artist of the Year."

Coming back home to Winnipeg, he began sifting through the new songs he'd written between tour dates. Many of them had already been tested on the road, their arrangements whittled into shape by a group of road warriors at the top of their game. Practically all of them were about the process of evolution — of making progress in life, love, and all points in between. Those themes were reflected in the music itself, which presented a crisper, clearer picture of Posen as a songwriter. If How Long had been his introduction to the roots-music world, then Headway was something  different: a sharply-defined snapshot of a musician who has truly crystallized his sound.

First single “What Are We Doing Here” climbed up the CBC Music Chart into the top 10 and like the album title suggests, Headway is all about growth. Already celebrated as a frontman, multi-instrumentalist, and producer, Ariel Posen hits a new high-water mark with his second album — an album that prioritizes songwriting above all else, showcasing the progress of a lifelong musician who's still in the middle of an upward trajectory.

PRAISE FOR ARIEL POSEN

“I couldn’t believe it when I heard Ariel’s record. I knew he was a great guitar player, but DANG IT....he’s really really good....I also didn’t know how well he could sing or write songs. There’s so many bangers on this record, but “Fade” is for sure my favourite!” — Cory Wong (Vulfpeck)

“Ariel Posen is guitar’s man for all seasons - he’s got the songs and the voice but he’s also a stellar slide guitarist with a gutsy, expressively melodic style” — Jamie Dickson (Guitarist Magazine UK)

“Posen is a rare breed of guitar player. He has managed to meld a keen sense of theory and half a centuries worth of influences into a unique style that is all his own.” — Michael Lux (Reverb.com)

“Individuality is the centerpiece of Ariel’s sound. His wizard-like slide chops and razor-sharp songwriting skills have helped him find a singular voice that continues to combine innovation and inspiration.” — Jason Shadrick (Premier Guitar)

“Ariel Posen is one of the most toneful and tasteful players to emerge in recent years – miss out on his new album at your peril!” — Chris Vinnicombe (The Guitar Magazine UK)

Songwriter, singer, and author Jehnny Beth has teamed up French electronic artist Rone for a hypnotic remix of her stunning new single “French Countryside”. The track follows Rone’s recent performance on Jehnny’s live and chat TV programme ECHOES, with dance collective (LA) Horde

“This is the song that caused me the most issues,” says Jehnny. “Up until the last week of mixing we didn’t have a version I was happy with, but I am very proud of it now. I almost didn’t put it on the record because it is so close to the bone it almost feels too self indulgent, but it was my intention to write a song that felt more vulnerable than anything I had ever written before.”

To Love Is To Live was recorded in Los Angeles, London, and Paris, and features a number of collaborators, including producers Flood, Atticus Ross, and longtime co-creator Johnny Hostile. It also features guest turns from The xx’s Romy Madley Croft, actor Cillian Murphy, and IDLES’ Joe Talbot.

Jehnny also released her debut collection of short stories, Crimes Against Love Memories (C.A.L.M), alongside a limited edition art book of photographs taken by Johnny Hostile on 9th July 2020 via White Rabbit. Both books are designed by Brian Roettinger from Willo Perron studio. A manifesto in the form of erotic monologues and dialogues, set to arouse and enlighten, Beth’s stories are punctuated by Hostile’s intimate photographs: they are the seeds from which her stories grew.

PRAISE FOR TO LOVE IS TO LIVE

"Beth’s debut solo album, To Love Is To Live, is a cathartic blast of beauty and darkness that exemplifies everything you would expect from this dynamic visionary." - Northern Transmissions

“...fuelled by an invigorating conviction and helmed by an artist with the gravitational pull to make it all align.” Exclaim!

“Nothing is out of bounds on ‘TO LOVE IS TO LIVE’, a timelessly raw and real ride through this thing called life.” - NME 4*

"’To Love Is To Live’ is a restless album that thrives on contrast: from delicate piano ballads to thrashing metal…Beth’s ability to glide between vulnerability and intimidation is unnerving, and adds more shades of grey to a performer who’s previously operated in black and white." - Observer 4*

Today, Aasiva shares her brand new single, “Namu”, a song that sets the stage for exciting new music from this Inuk Indie-Pop artist originally from Panniqtuuq, Nunavut.

This is Aasiva's first release since her self-titled debut album in 2018, which was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Folk Album at the 2019 Indigenous Music Awards, showcased at Breakout West in the Yukon, and reached over 200,000 streams on Spotify. That same year, Aasiva performed and led youth workshops across the North and toured internationally to the Migration Music Festival in Taipei, Taiwan.

Produced by Jace Lasek (Wolf Parade, The Jerry Cans, Stars), “Namu” shimmers with an electro sound that incorporates lo-fi guitars, beatboxing courtesy of FxckMr, and a nod to ‘90’s production. “I wrote this song while I was in Nunavik for a festival,” says Aasiva. “This was at the very beginning of my independent artist career and I had many shows lined up. I was very excited to be an artist full time, and I just kept wondering, where will my music take me?

Also, I feel like this is a question that we often ask ourselves: ‘Where are we going? What are we going to do next?’ That was my inspiration for this song.”

It's an apt line of questioning for an artist that holds a lot of promise. With this new song brimming from the experience of her upbringing, Aasiva adds her voice to a growing chorus of young artists proudly bringing Inuktitut music into a broader audience of music lovers everywhere.

Be on the lookout for more music from Aasiva in the near future.
