“Undoubtedly one of Canada's most underrated singer-songwriters, this kind of autumnal, progressive folk is hard to do well (and differently), but is majorly welcome as the country cools off, reflects on a summer gone by and figures out its next steps.” - CBC Music

“The Montreal-via-Calgary explorer of time, space, and his own instincts, is truly in top form on Sundry Rock Song Stock. The multi-layered tunes get way down deep into your mind, curling up to pleasure points like a soulful, psychedelic cat.” Exclaim! 9/10

“Gorgeous … Jarvis’ sound is one of a kind.” – Under the Radar

“Jarvis records layers upon layers of hushed vocals and instruments to create one beautifully dense bed of sound … Given his impressive output at the age of just 23 years-old, Yves Jarvis is surely one to keep your eye on.” - Houston Press

“Plenty of albums are described as dreamy for the way they drape otherwise conventional songs in pillowy textures and arrangements; Jarvis is the rare songwriter who also follows the logic of dreams within the structures of his compositions.” - Pitchfork

Eclectic autodidact Yves Jarvis has shared the new song “Body Of Work” today. On this track, Jarvis says he’s “having fun with forms. I’m a man of many motifs!” Created with a process similar to the video for his song “Projection”, he said that the “Body of Work” video was “foolishly printed and scanned one word at a time.”

In February Jarvis shared the swirling track “Projection”. He filmed the song’s video on an iPhone, printed out each frame and then carefully scanned each shot to create a flip book effect. Including lyrics in both English and French, the song is a "rickety rejection of dogma, tumbling tenaciously toward the tip," Jarvis said.

Jarvis’s latest album Sundry Rock Song Stock was a critically acclaimed release and included on many editorial 2020 end of year lists, including The Fader’s 50 Best Albums of 2020, Gorilla Vs Bear’s Best Albums, Pitchfork’s 35 Best Rock Albums and the track “For Props” was featured on Paste’s Top 50 Songs of the Year. “Sundry Rock Song Stock is a strange yet satisfying sensory experience,” Paste explained. “Its bubbling, offbeat sounds tickle parts of your ear that you didn’t even know existed, and his tantalizing vocal tones also scratch a pressing itch.”

Though he maintains an air of mystery with his lyrics, Jarvis’s whisper-soft words can be interpreted as both deeply personal and politically motivated in ways we haven’t heard from him before. “When you better yourself, you better the world,” Jarvis concludes. “Even if you only interact with one person in your life, the effect of trying to see things for what they are is vast. Change can feel like a fantasy, but I’m not fatalistic about it. I make music because I get results that way. It’s why I promote creativity, whatever that means for anyone.”

ALYSON McNAMARA ANNOUNCES NEW LP, LET ME SLEEP, SHARES FIRST SINGLE/VIDEO

Today, Alyson McNamara is announcing her third album, Let Me Sleep, out June 4 via Ghost Pepper Records. Produced, mixed, and engineered by Daniel McNamara and recorded in a whirlwind week at Taurus Recording in Toronto, Let Me Sleep sees Alyson moving from a four piece band to a trio with her longtime collaborators, Daniel McNamara (bass) and Kevin Richards (drums). The stripped-down sound overhauled the direction of Let Me Sleep. “Through performing as a trio, I realized how much space there was left for my vocals,” Alyson explains. “I was always curious about where the middle ground was between having that full-band sound and maintaining the intimate feeling of watching a singer songwriter.”

Alyson is also sharing the new video for lead single for “Shutting Down”, a song about “being half asleep and half awake and wondering if that in-between feels anything like travelling to the afterlife,” says Alyson. “The vocal harmonies remind me of distant voices calling me to join them in The Great Bay, which is my version of an imaginary, blissful place – think of a ferry rocking over to a pretty clearing, surrounded by happy little islands.”

MORE ABOUT LET ME SLEEP

“That was a huge lesson for me: if it doesn’t feel good, don’t do it,” says Alyson McNamara about “After Hours”, the opening track of Let Me Sleep. It’s a song that Alyson wrote nearly ten years ago and it was almost included on her 2018 album We All Heard Nothing. But the sonic layers and quick tempo of the 2018 version didn’t sit right with her so she scrapped the song.

Over the years, “After Hours” blossomed into something new and the version heard on Let Me Sleep has a hazy and laid-back vibe that sets the introspective mood of the entire record: ‘Take a deep breath,’ Alyson urges. By the end of the track, she is revitalized and, ready to take on whatever comes next, declares: ‘Another page has been turned.’ Let Me Sleep marks a new beginning for the Toronto-based indie-folk musician.

Alyson wrote Let Me Sleep in various locations including The Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and a sun-soaked apartment in Toronto. No matter the place, Alyson was alone during her writing sessions. “My favourite ideas always seem to arrive freely when the house is empty.” she says.

This solitude culminates in an album full of thoughtful musings on love and regrets, and reminds listeners to be patient with both themselves and others. “That’s Today” finds Alyson talking through her mistakes with her shadow but on the interlude “Worry Not”, Alyson is alone playing the piano and, showing off her incredible vocal control, assures us: ‘worry not for me’.

“I think music and songwriting is so important for me because I have a very jovial personality in social settings, but my music is so pensive and calm - it’s a real part of my true self,” Alyson says. “Sharing my songs is an opportunity to be seen fully.”

Despite the solitariness behind the lyrics, there’s a heartening communal feeling to Let Me Sleep. On “Won’t Be Sold”, Alyson touches on the heart of this feeling when she assures listeners, ‘You are not the only one who’s feeling lonely.’

“I want people to see me when they listen to Let Me Sleep,” says Alyson. “But I also want people to be able to listen to the record and see themselves.”

Alyson has toured across Canada with JUNO Award-winning band Said The Whale accompanying on-going collaborator Dave Monks (Tokyo Police Club). She has recorded and performed with Canadian supergroup Anyway Gang and has opened for artists such as Sloan and Gregg Allman. She has accompanied and shared the stage with Canadian trail blazers Catherine Maclellan, Kaia Kater, and Sarah MacDougall. Alyson has appeared on Paste Magazine NYC, BTR Live Studio and CBC First Play Live and has recorded with acclaimed producers Rob Schnapf (Elliott Smith, Beck), Gus van Go (Sam Roberts, Whitehorse) and Howard Bilerman (Arcade Fire, U.S Girls).
