Today, Nick Ferrio announces his upcoming LP, Television Of Roses, which he describes as “the light that flickers before your eyes and convinces you otherwise,” harkening Beatles’ Revolver spirits through a menagerie of cosmic feedback, sparse instrumentation and sovereignty musings. Produced by Jonas Bonnetta (Evening Hymns) and set for release on June 18, 2021, the album sees contributions from Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale), and Tanner Paré (Heaps).

The first single from the album, “The Dam”, is a really personal song for Ferrio. “My mother wrote a letter to me a few years ago, asking me if I remember her before her struggles with alcohol began. This song is a response to that letter. It explores those early years of my life, the poverty we experienced, but also my mother’s resilience and strength. We were estranged from each other at times in our lives and she passed away a year ago after being diagnosed with leukemia. But, I played it for her before she passed and we made amends. I’d like people to take away from this song that no matter how far you drift apart, there is still time to make things right.”

“The Dam” arrives today complete with a video directed by Tanner Paré. “For the video, we found one tape of home footage of my childhood and thought it would be interesting to return to my hometown of Sutton West, ON and re-create and re-examine some of those memories. When I grew up there were a lot of people in my household and not everyone was a fan of my constant singing and guitar playing, so I would go to the cliff in the woods near our house and sing out to the lake. We re-created that in the video. It was cool to go back there and explore. Brought back a lot of memories.

I think the most rewarding part of the process was playing this song for my mother before she passed away. I feel like it’s the strongest song I’ve written in my career probably because it was coming from this real, lived experience. Like all kids, I wanted to make her proud and I wanted to show her that I understood how hard it was for her, raising four kids by herself without much stability, and to tell her that we turned out great and she raised us right.”

MORE ON TELEVISION OF ROSES

With Television of Roses, Nick Ferrio arrives upon his decade-long commitment of solo creations with this collection of tactile memories, conversations and wisdoms. He has packaged a document for his son and the state of mind that fatherhood introduced, “Being a parent has made my focus more intense. Thinking of life through the metaphor of a camera, the aperture has been adjusted and what is important is now much more clear. Music and family are the subject and everything else is just noise in the background.”

Recorded by Jonas Bonnetta of Evening Hymns at his rural Port William Sound studio, the 15-year friendship between them and deep-rooted Tom Petty appreciation returned into depth of song: “Jonas has this adept ability to make me and my band feel comfortable. He’s able to conjure and capture magic. We spent nights together in a cabin, working out arrangements for the next day’s session huddled around the woodstove and listening to Full Moon Fever on repeat.”

In that blanket of north Frontenac county, Ferrio and Bonnetta gathered their gang of friends to collaborate: Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale) and Tanner Paré (Heaps/The Kents). The swelling results were mixed by Gavin Gardiner (The Wooden Sky) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

Ferrio’s appetite to search beyond the song is found throughout the breadcrumbs of his work: July Talk and Indigenous high-school students at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School in Thunder Bay; his involvement in the New Constellations Tour alongside Polaris Music Prize nominees Lido Pimienta, Elisapie, Feist, and Jeremy Dutcher; recordings with Julie Doiron and world-wide performances with Ansley Simpson, The Burning Hell, and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, amongst others.

“Writing songs is a large part of my identity now. At this time in my life, it feels like music is a part of what is necessary for me to be a person. I do it daily. It’s like tapping into something spiritual for me. It’s my sanctuary.”

“An expansion of VanGaalen’s cult audience is sorely overdue.” [8/10] - Uncut

World's Most Stressed Out Gardener, the majestic new album from multimedia auteur Chad VanGaalen, is available today on CD/LP/DSPs worldwide through Flemish Eye in Canada (and Sub Pop in the rest of the world). In celebration of this release, VanGaalen has created a video for the single “Starlight”. The song is a “celebration of our cosmic origins” shares VanGaalen, who fused old Super 8 footage of his family from the ’50s and ’60s, circular photos that were taken in his studio, and quick sketches to stylistically create a visual fusion unique to VanGaalen’s body of work.

On the video VanGaalen says, “I started by re-filming some old footage of my fam in places like Banff and Sylvan Lake. I combined that with photos of anything circular in my studio. After that, I started to panic, and sat down and drew whatever came to my burned out mind hole overtop of those backgrounds. A lot of fruit. A lot of Lamborghini Countach. I have a button on my computer that morphs the drawings together. It’s very satisfying and trippy. Go out into nature instead of watching the video.”

On Thursday, April 8th, VanGaalen has scheduled a live stream performance from his Yoko Eno studio that will be broadcast through NoonChorus. The show will be available for viewing in North America, Europe, Asia, and Australia at 7 PM (local time). Viewers will see and hear things that VanGaalen has historically been unable to incorporate into his in-person live show experience -- a heavily modified D-85 Electone organ, his prepared piano, various homemade instruments, and perhaps a shot or two of the skateboard ramp he built in his basement. Even more enticing? A psychedelic flute solo will be performed. Whatever the outcome, the show is guaranteed to be unforgettable. Ticket holders will be able to stream the performance for 5 days following and will also be able to buy merch. You can purchase tickets for this event here.

World’s Most Stressed Out Gardener LPs purchased through megamart.subpop.com, Flemish Eye (Canada), select independent retailers in North America, in the U.K, and in Europe will receive the album on orange-gold vinyl with blue/red trails (while supplies last). There is also a new T-shirt design available.

On May 21, 2021, Allison Russell will release her first ever solo project, Outside Child (produced by Dan Knobler) on Fantasy Records. Russell, a poet, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and co-founder of Our Native Daughters and Birds of Chicago, unpacks her youth in searing detail throughout the album. Today, she shares the first single, “Nightflyer” and its accompanying music video directed by Silvia Grav

On “Nightflyer”, Russell notes: “When I was sixteen I read The Thunder: Perfect Mind for the first time - it’s an exhortatory poem discovered among the Gnostic manuscripts in the Nag Hammadi library in the 40s. It has never left me. I’ve been meditating on the nature of resilience, endurance, and grace more deeply since becoming a mother. I was trying to bridge the divide and embrace shame and my inner divinity equally with this piece…”

Born and raised in Montreal, Russell imbues her music with the colors of her city - the light, the landscape, the language - but also the trauma that she suffered there. It is a heartbreaking reflection on a childhood no one should have to endure, and at the same time a powerful reclamation - asserted from a place of healing, of motherhood, of partnership - and from a new home made in Nashville. The record features contributions from many of the artistic family members she has found there including producer Dan Knobler, Erin Rae, Jamie Dick, Joe Pisapia, The McCrary Sisters, Ruth Moody, Yola, and her partner JT Nero. “It was just about making these songs live and breathe in the most honest way,” Russell says. “We were laughing, we were crying. And the communion between musicians, I hope people can hear that on the record. It felt like magic.”

Outside Child, says Russell “is about resilience, survival, transcendence, the redemptive power of art, community, connection, and chosen family.” Singing about this on “Nightflyer”, Russell ponders the healing power of motherhood, using the track’s wide-open expanse to convey the strength she didn’t know she had. Here, the line ‘I am the mother of the evening star / I am the love that conquers all’ is “the most defiantly triumphant, hopeful line I've ever written...that's about the birth of my daughter and how that transformed me.” Though they had a fraught relationship, Russell remembers how she’d crawl underneath the piano and listen to her own mother play. “I would hum along with her,” Russell recalls. “She said I was humming before I could talk. I was able to feel some kind of comfort or love or connection in a way that she couldn't verbally or physically express - but I could feel in her music that there was love in her.”

In the end, Outside Child is not only a radical reclamation of a traumatic childhood and lost home, it is a lantern light for survivors of all stripes - a fervent reminder of the eleventh hour, resuscitative power of art. “Allison’s new album, Outside Child, draws water from the dark well of a violent past,” says poet and songwriter Joe Henry. “The songs themselves, though iron-hard in their concerns, are exultant. Exercising haunted dream-like clean bedsheets snapped and hung out into broad daylight, and with the romantic poet’s lust for living and audacity of endurance.”
