Lightman Jarvis Ecstatic Band – aka Yves Jarvis and Romy Lightman - are a pair of idiosyncratic and restlessly creative artists. In the past decade, Jarvis’s ever-expanding discography on ANTI- Records and Flemish Eye have earned international acclaim, while Lightman’s twin-sister-led band Tasseomancy has transfixed listeners since the late 2000s. Their debut album Banned – coming out on June 25 - marks the duo’s first collaboration, slingshotting both musicians out of their comfort zones into spellbinding territories of lysergic folk and impressionistic rock.

On the quasi-title-track, “Elastic Band”, Jarvis and Lightman sound completely at ease as their voices harmonize in a rustling thicket of instrumentation.

Banned was recorded in the tranquil environment of the Tree Museum, an outdoor art gallery in rural Ontario hosting residencies for contemporary sculptors over the past 20 years. The pair credit its 200 acres of natural spaces intermingling with human-made creations as the fuel for their unfettered process. Recorded over two weeks in a free-flowing stream of improvisation, the album finds Lightman on synthesizer with Jarvis on drums and guitar, as their voices weave together into an electrified pastoral tapestry.

Beyond leaving the city behind to live alone in the woods, the album title Banned also highlights an element of risk. Like late ’60s counterculture musical Hair, the duo reject notions of repression with unspoken celebrations of naturalism, openness, and sexual liberation. These 15 songs offer an ephemeral intimacy and invitation to express free love that can only occur when artists welcome listeners into their private world.

“There are archetypes associated with love and togetherness,” says Lightman. “Then there’s a deeper way of being that sometimes isn’t documented. Our Ecstatic Band genuinely expresses that. It’s not only about a genre resonating and what came about musically - it’s about our love in collaboration with wind, trillium, plague days, moss and Precambrian rock.”

NICK FERRIO SHARES VIDEO FOR “EVERY TIME” FROM UPCOMING LP, TELEVISION OF ROSES

Today, Nick Ferrio is sharing another new track from his upcoming LP, Television Of Roses. Lyrically, “Every Time” is “really about my own mental health,” says Ferrio. “The lyrics act as a reminder for me to ‘live more in the moment.’ Like a lot of people, I tend to get stuck in cycles of critical thinking and self-doubt. I often question myself and wonder, am I making the right decision? Am I on the ‘right path’ or did I wander off somewhere along the way? I get stuck on these BIG QUESTIONS like what is my purpose in life – when in reality I’m missing the important things as they happen because I’m too busy worrying!

I eventually had this realization that this is it. This is my life, and I’ve got to embrace it – the highs, the lows and whatever happens in between. It’s about enjoying the moments because they’re precious. And, in a sense the song sort of celebrates that discovery.”

MORE ON TELEVISION OF ROSES

Ferrio describes Television Of Roses as “the light that flickers before your eyes and convinces you otherwise,” harkening Beatles’ Revolver spirits through a menagerie of cosmic feedback, sparse instrumentation and sovereignty musings. Produced by Jonas Bonnetta (Evening Hymns) and set for release on June 18, 2021, the album sees contributions from Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale), and Tanner Paré (Heaps).

With Television of Roses, Ferrio arrives upon his decade-long commitment of solo creations with this collection of tactile memories, conversations and wisdoms. He has packaged a document for his son and the state of mind that fatherhood introduced, “Being a parent has made my focus more intense. Thinking of life through the metaphor of a camera, the aperture has been adjusted and what is important is now much more clear. Music and family are the subject and everything else is just noise in the background.”

Recorded by Jonas Bonnetta of Evening Hymns at his rural Port William Sound studio, the 15-year friendship between them and deep-rooted Tom Petty appreciation returned into depth of song: “Jonas has this adept ability to make me and my band feel comfortable. He’s able to conjure and capture magic. We spent nights together in a cabin, working out arrangements for the next day’s session huddled around the woodstove and listening to Full Moon Fever on repeat.”

In that blanket of north Frontenac county, Ferrio and Bonnetta gathered their gang of friends to collaborate: Caylie Runciman (Boyhood), Evangeline Gentle, Lewis Parker (For Esmé), Nathan Truax (Said the Whale) and Tanner Paré (Heaps/The Kents). The swelling results were mixed by Gavin Gardiner (The Wooden Sky) and mastered by Philip Shaw Bova.

Ferrio’s appetite to search beyond the song is found throughout the breadcrumbs of his work: July Talk and Indigenous high-school students at Dennis Franklin Cromarty High School in Thunder Bay; his involvement in the New Constellations Tour alongside Polaris Music Prize nominees Lido Pimienta, Elisapie, Feist, and Jeremy Dutcher; recordings with Julie Doiron and world-wide performances with Ansley Simpson, The Burning Hell, and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson, amongst others.

“Writing songs is a large part of my identity now. At this time in my life, it feels like music is a part of what is necessary for me to be a person. I do it daily. It’s like tapping into something spiritual for me. It’s my sanctuary.”

Los Angeles/Toronto based singer-songwriter Lowell has had a unique journey from dropping out of college and working as a stripper to finding her footing as the go-to songwriter for platinum selling pop stars (Madison Beer, Hailee Steinfeld, JoJo, Demi Lovato, Lennon Stella, Charlie Puth, Bülow) and earning double platinum and gold certified plaques. Continuing her multidisciplinary trajectory, Lowell co-wrote ‘Bloodthirsty’, a horror feature film available on-demand April 23 in the U.S via Brainstorm Media and in Canada via Raven Banner. The film follows a young indie singer who finds herself turning into a werewolf under the pressure of recording her anticipated second album. In addition to being written by the mother-daughter duo of producer Wendy Hill-Tout and singer-songwriter Lowell, the all-women creative team includes director Amelia Moses, lead actor Lauren Beatty, and composer Michelle Osis.

Today, Lowell reveals new single “Bloodthirsty”, taken from a four-song collection of Lowell’s music featured in the film. Titled Bloodthirsty (Music From The Motion Picture), the EP will also be released on April 23 alongside the film. The scuzzy, guitar drenched track maintains the film’s theme of creating art and the toll the creative process can take on one’s well being. She sings, “I get the creeps with everyone’s eyes on me, bloodthirsty”, describing both outside and internal pressures of being an artist and how consuming the work can be. The track received a Canadian Screen Award nomination for Best Original Song

Lowell reveals, “The single from the film is a 90s influenced grungy little tune that I wrote specifically with the movie in mind. Cinematically, we heavily referenced 90s classics like Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Bram Stoker’s Dracula. The music needed to feel both nostalgic and contemporary at the same time so I did my best to capture the chords and essence of 90s grunge while still maintaining the lyrical intimacy of modern times. The 90s references also went along well with the feminist, LGBTQ positive undertones of the film. I grew up on Riot Grrl and Courtney Love and have always admired their willingness to be raucous and speak out, so it felt sonically suitable for a queer positive film made by a bunch of bad ass women.”

‘Bloodthirsty’ was accepted into Frontieres at Cannes, Telluride, Blood in the Snow, and premiered at Fantastic Fest in Austin, TX (the US’s biggest genre fest). Viewers in Canada can watch the film on iTunes, Rogers, Telus, Shaw, Cineplex, Bell, Vimeo, and in the United States via Apple TV, Amazon, Fandango Now, Google Play, Vudu, Comcast, DirecTV, Verizon Fios, Spectrum, and anywhere else you can rent and buy movies.
