How do you self-stabilize amidst ongoing crisis? Or, more crucially, what does it mean to question how much control we have over our collective well-being? On Ballad of a Tryhard, the third album by Scott Hardware, the moniker of Toronto-based musician and composer Scott Harwood, he attempts a response by honouring the splendor of “living between emotions.” It’s an album where a rich inner monologue, and the undefined space between reflection and realization can offer an invaluable reprieve.

Over luminous keys and sky-sweeping melodies, Harwood reverse engineers his capabilities as a composer skilled in the art of complexity to deliver his boldest album to date — unselfconsciously ambitious Y2K rock; a reimagination of experimental adult contemporary that tweaks the limits of soft rock with curiosity and appreciation.

For the first single, “Summer” (which features members of Phedre, Lee Paradise, WHIMM, Vallens, Blunt Chunks, and Jaunt), Harwood tries his hand at a bouncy, heartstring ballad built for the open road. "I was born in September, and autumn has always been my favourite season,” says Harwood. “Fall people love to look back and to dwell in the bittersweetness of memory. This song marks a deep dive into my changing thoughts about nostalgia, seeing it change from cozy romanticism to toxic waste."

On Ballad of a Tryhard, Hardware conducts a painstaking character evaluation to better understand the world by looking inward. Suspended and exalting, the album bursts with cinematic flourishes that ring with a courageous form of earnestness. Because once you examine the internal toll of people-pleasing, and question if charisma has been overvalued, is there space to imagine a new reality that seeks to uplift rather than wallow — observing sparse moments of beauty and light amidst a world in constant mourning?

Crafted in Spain and co-produced with Matt Smith (Prince Nifty, Lido Pimienta), Ballad of a Tryhard is a snapshot of weeks spent in Elche, a sleepy Mediterranean city on the southeast coast, wandering through emptied-out streets, becoming acquainted with the interiors of a historic apartment block, and living for the first time with a familiar love. With unlimited time on his hands, Harwood would write slowly, playing piano until dawn. The result is an album with ornate and bucolic orchestral arrangements that nod to a background in techno and house with a tangled web of synths and strings.

Prior to his solo work as Scott Hardware, Harwood played with indie rock stalwart Toronto groups like Ostrich Tuning and released ambient pop as Ken Park. A move to Berlin influenced his 2016 debut, Mutate Repeat Infinity, which centered the dancefloor as a site of queer resilience. 2020’s Engel pulled direct inspiration from Wim Wender’s 1987 haunting masterpiece Wings of Desire. In 2021 Harwood was accepted into the Slaight Family Music Lab.

Following huge acclaim for her 2020 album U kin B the Sun, Vancouver Soul-Americana artist Frazey Ford shares new single “Saul”, a previously unheard song originally recorded for the album. Named for her son, “Saul” is defiantly patient and beautifully cathartic, baring the strength and emotional resolve in Frazey’s music. The song’s arrival follows the release of the "U kin B the Sun"  music video, and Frazey’s resounding return to the stage this fall, with much anticipated cross-Canada dates in early 2022.

“Saul” is a languid ode to motherhood, "simply about the devastating amount of love you have for a child," Frazey explains. Her tremulous voice lavishes a deliberate bass-laden groove on this lone outtake from U Kin B the Sun, celebrated for its "heady and infectious" (The Guardian) blend of soul, psychedelia and country. Frazey began writing the song not long after the birth of Saul – who features as the clouds in the “U kin B the Sun” video – and only completed it recently. Sonically restrained yet richly expressive, “Saul” is an outpouring of the particularly vulnerable and earthy experience of love for a child.

MORE ABOUT U KIN B THE SUN

On her masterful third album, Frazey Ford seamlessly inhabits an entire world of shapeshifting rhythm she refers to as “pagan disco,” elevating every beat and groove with the subtle magnetism of her mesmerizing voice as she examines pain and loss telegraphed through a prism of unfettered joy. Ford combats the toxic political climate that surrounds us with an irrefutably bold sense of assurance. With its graceful collision of soul and psychedelia combined with ’70s funk, U kin B the Sun is a body of work that invites both self-reflection and wildly joyful movement, and ultimately sparks a quiet transcendence.

Recorded at John Raham’s Afterlife Studios in Vancouver, British Columbia, featuring her Vancouver musicians Darren Parris, Leon Power, Craig McCaul, and Caroline Ballhorn, Erilk Nielsen along with Phil Cook on keys, U kin B the Sun follows Ford’s 2014 release Indian Ocean, an album made with members of legendary Memphis soul band The Hi Rhythm Section.

Almost two years to the day after the release of Sarah Harmer’s JUNO Award nominated, Polaris Music Prize nominated album Are You Gone, the internationally lauded Ontario songwriter is finally able to take her stunning record on the road.

Are You Gone is a deeply personal and political collection of songs motivated by the beauty of life, the urgency of the climate crisis, and the question of loss. Sarah called the album a spiritual successor of sorts to her acclaimed 2000 debut, You Were Here, which made many year-end critics’ lists, and which TIME called the year’s best debut album. Its simple title, Are You Gone, is a meditation on the idea of presence, and a bookend to the questions posed on You Were Here - a sharpened, more electric confrontation with the realities of nature and human nature.

The result of an unshakeable inclination to make music in conflict with a lifestyle more attuned to privacy, quiet, and activism, Sarah wrote Are You Gone gradually over the last decade as she traded music for grassroots organizing as her “day job.” Between co-founding the citizen’s organization PERL (Protecting Escarpment Rural Land) and leading the coalition’s successful efforts to prevent a quarry from being built on the Niagara Escarpment, she became a fixture in local politics and advocacy, while keeping her musical chops fresh by writing and playing casually with friends. Finally, in 2019, while pondering the “ghosts” of loss, capitalism’s gluttony and music’s potential as a public platform, Sarah got to work on Are You Gone, her most sophisticated record to date.
