Today, Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene announced Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities, a career-spanning collection of B-sides, rarities, and outtakes pulled from 20 years of 7-inches, compilations, soundtracks, and hard-to-find releases. Fans can pre-order the album and stream the first single “This House Is On Fire”, a lush and heartbreaking dream pop track taken from the 2009 Forgiveness Rock Record recording sessions.

Once a two-person basement recording project, Broken Social Scene came to life onstage as a shadowy improvisational entity with a revolving-door roster, each concert a wholly unique experience dependent on the room, the weather, what they ate for dinner that night, and who was dropping in to play. Where the band’s 2001 debut album, Feel Good Lost, presented BSS as an anonymous ambient project that reflected its humble, homespun origins, their electrifying live performances from that era rallied an extended family of performers with roots in post-rock (Justin Peroff; Do Make Say Think’s Charles Spearin), Latin jazz (Andrew Whiteman), art-folk (Feist), synth-pop (Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, also of Stars), dance-punk (Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw), and country rock (Jason Collett).

But by pursuing improvisational freedom over commercial considerations, Broken Social Scene set a new gold standard for indie rock in the 21st century with 2002’s You Forgot It In People, an album that pushed the genre far beyond its noisy ’90s slacker roots toward a more sonically expansive, emotionally expressive vision. And with follow up releases like the blissfully chaotic Broken Social Scene (2005), the rapturous Forgiveness Rock Record (2010), and the intricate, insidiously melodic Hug of Thunder (2017), Broken Social Scene have amassed a thrillingly amorphous, unpredictable body of work. Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities is everything that happened in between.

Today, Dan Mangan is ready to announce that he’s returning to the road for a string of tour dates throughout Canada beginning February 25. Artist presale will begin tomorrow, December 7, followed by general public onsale on Friday, December 10 here. All dates are listed below.

Recently, we marked the 10th anniversary of Dan’s pivotal, JUNO Award winning album, Oh Fortune. The LP has been re-released and arrives complete with a bonus disc of ten ‘mostly’ unheard album outtakes, demos, and live versions of tracks from that era. In an essay reminiscing about the making of Oh Fortune, Mangan says:

"Four years of thought and trial-by-fire manifested in the creation of Nice, Nice, Very Nice. I’d spent that time cutting my teeth in the corners of noisy bars to people who were there for the drinks and, almost specifically, not for the music. My presence was not anticipated, but, more accurately - tolerated. Sometimes I’d had other musicians with me, but most often, I was alone. I felt like a comedian, chiseling my material in the underground. Figuring out what kept people, and what didn’t. I had to earn every perked ear. I played cafes, living rooms, back yards, sports bars - literally anywhere that would have me.”

“Oh Fortune was born of a different kind of storm,” continues Mangan. “Luckily, Nice, Nice, Very Nice had succeeded. Those bars became theatres, and the momentum of a burgeoning career demanded a more consistent cast of faces in the van.

I knew that I had learned how to hold an audience. I knew that I had begun to unfold my mind through lyrics and melody.

Oh Fortune is about changing. Shifting. Adjusting to new footholds in new sands. Finding glory in letting go. Surviving another day and being a touch stronger for it. It’s about dangling your legs for the sharks. It’s about stories to tell as we age. It’s about aching for rain. It’s about the taste of something. It’s about the veins of a leaf mirroring the rivers of its forest. It's about flags burning together. It’s about the daylight forgiving you."

SIGNS WITH VICTORY POOL FOR NEW LP DUE OUT IN 2022

Folk singer-songwriter Ellen Froese’s comforting and husky warble gets crowds a little groovy and commands presence on Canadian and international stages. When she sings that she ‘feels like I’m waiting for you to let loose,’ a line from the first track on her 2019 album Fightin’ Words, listeners wonder how they could’ve ever kept her waiting.

Clever and slightly self-deprecating, Ellen’s songs get into the places of your heart that hold both those quieter melancholic feelings and those moments of warm contentment that make you want to dance shoulder to shoulder with whoever is around.

Today, the Saskatchewan songwriter is sharing the new single and video for “In The Sun”, a song about “conflict and feeling helpless, unable to get your point across,” says Froese. “It's about the feeling of not being heard, and just wanting to escape the cycle of thought - planning your next move, and thinking and thinking about what you could say to make them hear and understand you.

Recorded at The Rec Hall in Saskatoon, “In The Sun” features esteemed peers Clayton Linthicum (Kacy and Clayton - Guitar), Sam Corbett (The Sheepdogs - Drums/Production), and Chris Mason (The Deep Dark Woods - Bass).

“I originally put a version of this song on my album with Campbell Woods, it's very folky. I thought it would be great to hear a lush, vibey version with pedal steel and soft harmonies. I think this new version gets the feeling of 'accepting sadness' across.”

MORE ABOUT ELLEN FROESE

Growing up on a dairy farm in the heart of Saskatchewan, Ellen’s passion for music started at an early age, beginning with a love of listening to the classics in her dad’s truck. But it was discovering Neil Young that drove her to a love of songwriting. Hearing his music made her quit piano lessons to instead teach herself guitar.

The beginning of her career was heavily influenced by classic folk and bluegrass. In 2012, she and two friends formed In With The Old, which Ellen lovingly calls her “teenage bluegrass band,” which produced two albums and toured extensively. Now with three solo albums and one forthcoming in 2022, Ellen’s sound has evolved, though she’s never stopped being obsessed with folk music. Her music now adds elements of rock n’ roll, classic country ballads, honky-tonk, and 1970s psychedelic pop grooves while still being grounded in the bluegrass tradition of a working-class relatability.

Ellen is currently working on her fourth solo album, produced by Sam Corbett of The Sheepdogs, which finds her stepping out of her comfort zone even more. It’s sure to have fans swooning.
