“Saskatchewan's Katie Tupper makes the kind of soul-stained folk that feels instantly familiar, but it's her complex writing — vividly capturing the sights and smells of her home province, like the "fields of butter" on "How Can I Get Your Love?" — that makes her debut EP so anticipated, further calcifying the singer/songwriter's distinct and subtle touch.“ Exclaim!

“Tupper's smooth, neo-soul delivery is paired with a minimalist sound, often letting her honest songwriting shine in the forefront; definitely recommended for fans of Charlotte Day Wilson or Loony. …we can't wait to hear how she'll continue to grow and expand her sound.” CBC Music

Hailing from Saskatoon, singer/songwriter Katie Tupper blends Neo-soul and indie seamlessly into a tantalizing concoction. While recent single “How Can I Get Your Love?”, which is currently rising up the CBC Music Top 20 chart, leaned more into the serene side of her sound, her latest offering, “Danny”, slides gracefully in another direction. On display is her mastery of immediacy: it’s gentle, yet undeniably head-bobbing all at once, a deep dive into a finger-snapping, emotive blast of pure grace. Taken from her debut EP, Towards the End, “Danny” captures everything that makes Tupper an essential, exciting new voice.

With swelling strings and twinkling keys exquisitely backing up an instantly catchy, syrupy drumline, Tupper's voice soars over the track, telling a story of heartbreak and resentment, digging into that feeling of having so little left to lose that there’s hardly anything worth salvaging. The lyrics feel akin to an exhalation for any of us that have limped out of a relationship that simply didn’t work, wounded and uncertain: ‘Your family never liked me, and I never liked them / And, it scares me to say that out loud / But what’s the worst some words can do to me now,’ and other moments have a stark, forthright beauty to them. It’s deeply relatable and bracing all at once. It recalls all the uncomfortable moments of a love faded we try so hard to leave behind, yet never seem able to forget.

Speaking on both the track and its video, Tupper shares, “‘Danny’ is about the biggest breakup I've, thankfully, ever had to go through. I was with a guy for a handful of years, most of which I was just hoping that something would happen that would give me an excuse to break up with him. Turns out, when you're in a long term relationship and looking for a way out the entire time you build bad habits for all relationships to follow! Who would've thought! Danny is a reflection on that relationship, and asking how I’m supposed to move forward in my life with these poor habits stamped into my brain. The music video brought that idea to life in a colourful expedition for closure.”

Directed by Mashie Alam, the video is a steady stream of contrasting images, finding Tupper traversing and relaxing through a series of idyllic locations, donning a flowery dress: it’s imagery right out of a fantasy. Tagging along, however, is the titular Danny, represented here by a lifeless mannequin: literally dead weight that she’s left to lug around, the perfect representation of her view on their crumbled relationship, when staying together has become merely a habit. As with everything Tupper does, it’s contemplative but not without a bit of a bite.

MORE ABOUT KATIE TUPPER:

Having begun to tinker with her own songwriting via piano lessons at a particularly young age, Katie Tupper found herself touring the U.S. playing bass drum with a marching band at the age of just 14. By the time she was 18, she had properly entered the local Saskatoon art community, joining a loose collection of musicians, all in preparation of gradually striking out on her own. Stay tuned for more from Towards the End, out February 18th.

Today, Toronto indie rock collective Broken Social Scene have released “Curse Your Fail”, a track taken from the forthcoming Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities, a career-spanning collection of B-sides, rarities, and outtakes pulled from 20 years of 7-inches, compilations, soundtracks, and hard-to-find releases. “Curse Your Fail”, previously only available on a 2010 split 7-inch with The Sea and Cake, features alternating vocals from four lead singers including guest Sebastien Grainger (of DFA 1979)

“Curse Your Fail” follows “This House Is On Fire”, a previously unreleased dream pop single taken from the 2009 Forgiveness Rock Record recording sessions. Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities is available for digital download and streaming on-demand on January 14, 2022. Fans can pre-order the album on vinyl set for release in the spring.

Once a two-person basement recording project, Broken Social Scene came to life onstage as a shadowy improvisational entity with a revolving-door roster, each concert a wholly unique experience dependent on the room, the weather, what they ate for dinner that night, and who was dropping in to play. Where the band’s 2001 debut album, Feel Good Lost, presented BSS as an anonymous ambient project that reflected its humble, homespun origins, their electrifying live performances from that era rallied an extended family of performers with roots in post-rock (Justin Peroff; Do Make Say Think’s Charles Spearin), Latin jazz (Andrew Whiteman), art-folk (Feist), synth-pop (Amy Millan and Evan Cranley, also of Stars), dance-punk (Metric’s Emily Haines and Jimmy Shaw), and country rock (Jason Collett).

LISTEN TO “THIS HOUSE IS ON FIRE”

But by pursuing improvisational freedom over commercial considerations, Broken Social Scene set a new gold standard for indie rock in the 21st century with 2002’s You Forgot It In People, an album that pushed the genre far beyond its noisy ’90s slacker roots toward a more sonically expansive, emotionally expressive vision. And with follow up releases like the blissfully chaotic Broken Social Scene (2005), the rapturous Forgiveness Rock Record (2010), and the intricate, insidiously melodic Hug of Thunder (2017), Broken Social Scene have amassed a thrillingly amorphous, unpredictable body of work. Old Dead Young: B-Sides & Rarities is everything that happened in between.

TOUCHING’S (AKA, MICHAEL FALK (EX-LES JUPES)) NEW ALBUM, littleworlds, OUT NOW VIA HEAD IN THE SAND

“All I Need, about the last day of a manufacturing plant, paints a poignant, John Samson-esque picture of existential struggle, while Caught in the Middle is a classic tale of unattainable love and Tony Called the Muscle is an uptempo study of how the mighty fall that will likely sound huge when played live. Here’s hoping…” - WINNIPEG FREE PRESS

Touching, the artistic alias of Michael Falk (formerly of Les Jupes), recently released his new LP, littleworlds. Today, the Winnipeg-based  songwriter and producer is sharing a remix of album closer “Unbelievable” by Rococode (Laura Smith and Andrew Braun), which arrives complete with a video from Daniel Murphy.

“Rococode was the first non-Manitoban band I ever signed to my old label Head In The Sand, and I've long appreciated Laura and Andrew,” says Falk. “They've made some great music over the years. Artistically and personally, they felt like the right people to ask to mess with one of the songs on the record, and I really love what they've made. I like how they've somehow managed to make the song even more introverted and lonely... its glitchy in the best David Lynch ways possible. Daniel Murphy has been making all of our cover artwork, and it was great to get him involved on the video side now too. His work often feels ever-so-slightly, purposefully out of balance, like a pretty picture that's just fucked up enough to keep you guessing a bit.”

“When Mike asked us to reimagine a track, we came up with the concept of ‘what if Radiohead’s ‘Everything in its Right Place’ was on the Nine Inch Nails album The Fragile?’,” says Smith. “With these, admittedly way too lofty, sonic goals in mind we set about trying to create a new but complimentary narrative out of the song’s raw materials.

We wanted to encapsulate the moodiness of the lyrics and to juxtapose the beautiful piano of the original with something harsh and hypnotic. We started by taking a couple of bars from the piano outro and looping it into a grinding pulse. Next we chopped up lyrical phrases and messed with Mike’s voice to create a fragmented and multi-voiced inner dialogue that eventually comes together in a moment of serene clarity. We made 8 minute versions and 3 minute versions. We tossed in a four on the floor 909 kick, surprise bass notes, muffled vocals, and dug out our e-bow. We didn’t listen to any Radiohead or Nine Inch Nails.

It took us some time to agree on the effectiveness of most of these moves so the process, much like the remix itself, was somewhat tense before finally finding its way to a moment of release. On our final listen before sending it off, some teenagers walking home from school saw us dancing in the living room and made awkward eye contact. We took that as a good sign and in the end, like always, we agree it was worth the ride to make something we both believe in.”

MORE ABOUT littleworlds
In late Spring of 2020, Touching began sharing 10 songs over 10 weeks, a project that was unveiled serially with a one-shot video for each track filmed and released every seven days, eventually released as the project’s debut album, Isolation Blues. With its relatable lyrical themes of loneliness, depression, and disconnection, Exclaim! described the collection as “a greatest hits of pandemic moods.”

Hot on its heels now comes littleworlds, a new album aiming to disinfect the darkness with sunlight. The sophomore release from Touching is built on feelings of hope, simple joys found amidst conflict, and the anticipation and fear of becoming a parent. Its 12 songs were written during the same period as Isolation Blues as Falk stepped away from touring and various other collaborative projects. Using this opportunity to build a studio in his basement, he centered his efforts on writing and recording.

At the heart of littleworlds is Falk’s rich baritone. His striking voice soars with the passion of Frightened Rabbit’s Scott Hutchison, coasts with the coolness of Marker Starling’s Chris A. Cummings, and plumbs the emotional depths of Richard Dawson. Musically, the album injects the downtempo electronic ambience of Massive Attack (“I’m inspired by their late career stuff that no one thinks about,” laughs Falk) into the high drama indie-rock of Editors, Manchester Orchestra, or We Were Promised Jetpacks.

From his home in Winnipeg, the multi-hyphenate musician has organized festivals, run a studio, and operated a record label, juggling countless roles within the local scene. As a performer, he has toured with acclaimed acts including Les Jupes, The Liptonians, and rapper/CBC host Ismaila Alfa. Yet since becoming a father, Falk has consolidated his lifelong pursuit into a renewed, singular focus: Get back to making music. And lots of it.
