Today, Busty And The Bass are sharing a two-song single package, "Airplanes”, featuring Polaris Music Prize winner Cadence Weapon, and B-Side “Caribou". The two tracks mark the first new music from the Montréal collective since their breakout 2020 album Eddie, which was recorded with Grammy Award winning producer and sonic guide Neal Pogue (Tyler The Creator, Outkast, Anderson .Paak) and executive producer Verdine White (Earth, Wind & Fire).

"Airplanes" is a bouncy house-influenced rap single with the band’s signature blend of jazz and funk. The song finds Alistair Blu (keys/vocals) trading verses with Cadence Weapon who explains the track is about "finding a way to allow yourself to truly relax and disconnect in the age of the notification."

The new single “started as an electronic beat, reminiscent of one of those dingy Montréal afterparties where the line between late night and early morning ceases to exist,” says Louis Stein. “Bringing it to the band brought new life to the groove and when we got Cadence on the track, he gave it meaning and helped make this beat into a song.”

The B-side track “Caribou” is the brain-child of Eric Haynes (keys, piano). “The inspiration is a bit of Radiohead, a bit of Floating Points, with the production of live instruments mimicking how electronic elements and drum sequencers might sound,” says Alistair Blu. “A few of the parts are taken from group jams live off the floor, while others are overdubs. The song journeys through peaks and valleys of strings and horns, and is driven forward by the movement of Julian’s drum performance."

Saying the Cowboy Junkies ‘cover’ songs doesn’t quite do them justice. Like greats from the classic pop standards era, the Junkies interpret the music of others. They embrace the songs, adapting them in their own style.

The band’s latest release, Songs Of The Recollection, finds the band as distinctive and individual as when they started. Long admired for their carefully chosen covers, the new album consists of nine songs by some of the band’s favorite artists. Some of the tracks are newly recorded, while some are collected from earlier projects.

Listen to Songs Of The Recollection and you’ll hear works originally written and recorded by Neil Young, Gordon Lightfoot, Bob Dylan, The Cure, Gram Parsons, Vic Chesnutt, The Rolling Stones, and David Bowie that the Junkies make their own – and make them sound perfectly natural beside each one another.

Today they’re sharing the LP’s opening track, David Bowie’s "Five Years”, which is the opening track to Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars. “Those ominous, persistent drums fade-up, the opening piano chord explodes and Bowie steps into the listeners life,” says Michael Timmins. “This was the type of moment that turned our innocent minds inside out when we were young and hunkering greedily around the turntable. When we play it live today, 50 years after it was written, it seems to have more power and relevance than ever; climate change, the pandemic, collapsing democracies...choose your crisis...David predicted them all.”

“Long before we were musicians, we were music fans,” says Michael Timmins. We didn't grow up sitting around the kitchen table playing instruments and harmonizing. We grew up sitting around the record player listening to each other's record collections and having our minds blown. This was the passion that we shared.”

Formed in Toronto in 1985, with siblings Michael Timmins on guitar, Margo Timmins on vocals, Peter Timmins on drums, and Michael’s lifelong friend Alan Anton on bass, the band was an odd fit for the era. In the days of hair metal and rock bombast, the Junkies’ music seemed to spread like a whispered secret. Those who heard it, never forgot it.

In a way, Songs Of The Recollection takes the quartet back to its roots. While the group is known primarily for its original songs, since the band’s beginnings Cowboy Junkies have always offered up favorites by other artists.

Except for one original and a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “State Trooper”, the band’s 1986 debut album, White Off Earth Now, was made up entirely of songs by great blues artists. When the Junkies broke through to the mainstream with the follow-up album, The Trinity Session, it was the group’s moody rendition of Lou Reed’s “Sweet Jane” that immediately caught the ears of college radio.

In the following years, the group included cover songs on nearly all of their releases, recorded an entire album of songs by the darkly evocative songwriting great Vic Chesnutt, and released two volumes of ’Neath Your Covers series, comprised of songs by other artists.

Cowboy Junkies have never had a break-up or had to take a hiatus because they couldn’t get along or got tired of each other. Instead of battling egos, the band appreciates what the other brings to the table. It’s not surprising that the band still appreciates what their favorite songwriters have to offer as well.

“Our goal has always been to create music that took hold of the listener the way that this music took hold of us. These are some of the songs and some of the artists that found their way into our lives and eventually into our repertoire over the past fifty years,” says Michael Timmins.

ELLEN FROESE NEW VIDEO FOR “DID YOU HAVE A LOVE BEFORE ME?”

Photo Credit : Ava Wild // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Recently, Saskatchewan songwriter Ellen Froese released her first new single via Victory Pool, “In The Sun”. Today, she shares another new single, “Did You Have A Love Before Me?”, a song written “in the heart of COVID because I was in a songwriting slump and just looking for an idea to roll with,” says Froese. “I think I was staring into my closet with my guitar in hand trying to think of something to write about, when I pictured a wedding dress hanging in there. I thought, hey, maybe that could be a story. So I wrote about a person who finds a mysterious wedding dress in their partners' closet, and they are wondering what brought it there. It's a sad country song. I'm especially pleased with the omnichord in the choruses!”

Recorded at The Rec Hall in Saskatoon, “Did You Have A Love Before Me” features esteemed peers Clayton Linthicum (Kacy and Clayton - Guitar), Sam Corbett (The Sheepdogs - Drums/Production), and Chris Mason (The Deep Dark Woods - Bass).

Growing up on a dairy farm in the heart of Saskatchewan, Ellen’s passion for music started at an early age, beginning with a love of listening to the classics in her dad’s truck. But it was discovering Neil Young that drove her to a love of songwriting. Hearing his music made her quit piano lessons to instead teach herself guitar.

The beginning of her career was heavily influenced by classic folk and bluegrass. In 2012, she and two friends formed In With The Old, which Ellen lovingly calls her “teenage bluegrass band,” which produced two albums and toured extensively. Now with three solo albums and one forthcoming in 2022, Ellen’s sound has evolved, though she’s never stopped being obsessed with folk music. Her music now adds elements of rock n’ roll, classic country ballads, honky-tonk, and 1970s psychedelic pop grooves while still being grounded in the bluegrass tradition of a working-class relatability.

Ellen is currently working on her fourth solo album, produced by Sam Corbett of The Sheepdogs, which finds her stepping out of her comfort zone even more. It’s sure to have fans swooning.
