“Dealing in the themes of recovery, loss and love, Lapell's latest is the new generation's heart-rending answer to Tapestry's call.” Exclaim!

“...sounds quite timeless, as if all the songs could have been recorded yesterday or decades ago.”  Americana UK

“…an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice. …a mix of ballads, odes, and arresting vignettes.” No Depression

As Abigail Lapell’s tour dates continue this week with stops in Alberta and BC, the acclaimed songwriter is sharing the new animated video for “Scarlet Fever”, a track off her latest album, Stolen Time, out now via Outside Music. “The idea for this video was a miniature fever dream exploring quarantine, isolation and folkloric rituals of healing and recovery,” says Lapell. “It's the third in a three-part series of music videos made in collaboration with Montreal puppet theatre Panadream over the past five years and three albums. I started writing this song in the early days of COVID, which felt like such a fragile, uncertain time. The lyrics are loosely inspired by an elderly relative's stories of being quarantined with scarlet fever in the 1920s, which made a big impression on me as a child. Some of that imagery shows up in the video – like the red sign posted on the door of a quarantine house – along with handmade marionettes, shadow puppets, animation and elaborate set pieces. We wanted to create a tiny, surreal world with its own shifting and uncertain logic.”

Her latest LP, Stolen Time, out now via Outside Music, strikes a fine balance between her hushed acoustic debut, Great Survivor, and her two rockier, Chris Stringer produced records, Hide Nor Hair and Getaway. Stolen Time brings a live-off-the-floor 70s folk-rock vibe with more structural experimentation to the table on songs that feel expansive in their scope; unhurried, psychedelic, and other-worldly.

JOINS ODESZA FOR MAMMOTH STADIUM TOUR THIS WEEK

TOUR DATES SUPPORTING CHARLOTTE CARDIN BEGIN IN NOVEMBER

“... casts back to timeless memories of fumbling early romance—first kisses, messy breakups, and short-lived flirtations are all soundtracked by weightless indie pop and R&B stylings”
 – Under The Radar

“It’s a striking debut, an unguarded, ultra-personal tapestry—stories of heartbreak and struggle, sung in her soothing, signature voice”
– SPIN

“‘Things’ is an unadulterated look at youthful insecurities and unrequited affection. Over a somber but punchy backdrop, she delivers an evocative performance that is ripe with honesty” – EARMILK

Today, Toronto singer-songwriter Charlie Houston is sharing the new single, “Dinosaurs In The Garden”, a driving indie pop track about “the fear of getting your heart broken while in a relationship." “While you have no reason to suspect it’s going to happen," says Houston, "there is always looming anxiety about the fact that you’ve allowed yourself to fall for someone and now can’t control whether it works out or not."

As Houston prepares the release of her second EP, due out later this year, she will be joining ODESZA on their mammoth stadium tour which commences this later week, as well as concluding her cross-Canada support tour with JUNO Award 2022 Artist Of The Year, Charlotte Cardin.

In a few short weeks, Jesse Northey will be taking his new record, Onion Knight, on the road for a run of tour dates beginning August 11. Full tour dates can be found below. “I'm so thrilled to be going back on the road in Western Canada,” says Northey. “I lived there for so long and some of my best pals and strongest musical memories are from touring BC and Alberta. In addition to a grand reunion, I'm stoked to be on the road with my musical pal Chloe Doucet who shares some musical inspirations with me. Her song “Satan Loves You” is sooooo good and it's going to be fun to rock out together with our band featuring Matt Cooke (Guitar) and Dylan Ryan (Drums).

Today, he’s sharing the new live video performing “Hold On” and “Both Eyes Closed” at the Dandelion Mansion. “We had an all-star band team featuring Dani Nash, Matt Cooke, and Chloe Doucet (all excellent artists in their own right) and we did a cute little takeaway video in my backyard,” says Northey. “Not only was it an excuse for me to rake some leaves and clean up my yard, but it set a really casual tone that made us all feel really comfortable and relaxed. Bee Pethick was the director and came in with her friend Molly the day before to plant some flowers and set the stage. Bryce Zimmerman is an excellent cinematographer and together him and Bee made an extremely tasteful takeaway video that cuts in some other elements of Toronto to turn this into a reflective piece.”

MORE ABOUT ONION KNIGHT
If one was to analyze the DNA of Jesse Northey music, its double helix might look an awful lot like a sharp insider's take on the world of capital “P” pop songcraft. A decade and change into his career, Northey has long established his own voice as a songwriter, but the music palpably pulses with inspiration from the decades' worth of tune-smiths that have come before him. In tandem with lyrics that explore the myriad ways in which we need to dismantle the artifice of masculinity, societal norms, and creativity-sapping careerist ambitions, this is music firmly rooted in the classics, but cut with a clear-eyed contemporary viewpoint.

On his new album Onion Knight, Northey presents a widescreen distillation of these influences, brought to life with exceptional warmth and attention to detail by ace producer Thomas D’Arcy (The Sheepdogs, NOBRO, Yukon Blonde) at Taurus Studios in Toronto. “Onions are associated with crying,” Northey says. “I wanted to conjure an imagery that confronts the stoic heroism associated with masculinity and take a jab at it.” And he's done just that: the feel of Onion Knight is classic but also urgent, tackling modern anxieties and buffered by a warm, rich psychedelia that is inviting as it is pristine.

The drums are lush and up front, the bass melodic and McCartney-esque, and the songs are driven by piano, vintage keyboards, and shimmering synths. All of these elements readily bring to mind titans of song such as Elliott Smith, Harry Nilsson, Aimee Mann, and Spoon, as well as contemporaries such as Chris Cohen and Andy Shauf.

MORE ABOUT JESSE NORTHEY
Northey has maintained a parallel career behind the curtains of the music world. His work as an engineer and producer has afforded him plenty of time to hone his studio skills, and his place on the High Priestess Publishing roster has led to songs appearing in far flung places such as the Amazon's documentary on Pete Buttigieig, former Indiana Mayor turned presidential candidate. As the leader of Jesse & The Dandelions, he has shared stages with Hollerado, Said the Whale, and July Talk, and toured extensively in Japan. And since 2020, he's been the man behind Victory Pool Records, a record label and management company, helping to shepherd an impressive variety of acts such as Witch Prophet, The Deep Dark Woods, Marlaena Moore, Ghost Woman and Ombiigizi.
