“Inspired by the tongue-in-cheek songwriting of Soccer Mommy and Courtney Barnett, "Double Aquarius" is full of memorable lines drenched in witty, self-deprecating humour about watching reruns of Glee and killing the mood at a party by playing Sufjan Stevens. But it's the kernels of truth that lie beneath that make this such a relatable listen, illuminating inner battles that we all have on a regular basis.” CBC Music on “Double Aquarius”

“Their songwriting is superb, as they share specific events and thoughts that made them feel out-of-place. Larsen’s situation is partly self-inflicted as well as out of their control. It’s the perfect storm that we know all too well. …Bells Larsen is a name to be excited about” The Revue on “Double Aquarius”

“the bouncy and upbeat folk-tinged anthem ponders the affinity between love and the stars.” Exclaim! On “Double Aquarius

Today, Bells Larsen (he/they, il/iel) is sharing another new single from their upcoming album, Good Grief, out September 9 via Next Door Records. “Sweater Weather” is inspired by Andy Shauf’s style of songwriting. “I love that he embodies different narrators from song to song, weaving in and out of different voices,” says Larsen. “When I wrote ‘Sweater Weather’, I wanted to tell a story where my voice takes a backseat rather than being the one that drives the song’s primary narrative. It’s about watching someone grieve and being in awe of their ability to keep going, despite being in a lot of pain.”

The single arrives with a live performance video of the song by Riley Lamarche. "This past January, a year after recording Good Grief, the band reunited at Graham Ereaux’s (Devarrow) house in Nova Scotia. Over the course of an afternoon, we shot a few live videos. I'm happy that of the handful of takes that we did, the best ones all include a cameo from Dan's dog, Chance. Good Grief is a pretty intimate record; most of it was recorded at Graham's house, so I hope that folks can feel like they're right there in the room with us when they're listening. The same goes for this video."

MORE ABOUT GOOD GRIEF
Larsen started writing for the album at the age of nineteen, during what would prove to be the start of a hugely transitional time in their life. In the five years since the songs on Good Grief began to take shape, Larsen has moved across the country, studied philosophy at a small liberal arts college, dropped out, and then moved across the country again. Larsen’s life was also put on pause after the sudden death of their first love. Since this person’s passing, Larsen has been writing songs that attempt to express this person’s spirit and create a tangible container for their memory. “This loss left so many people with so many unanswered questions, myself included,” Larsen admits. “I haven’t always arrived at answers to these questions, but songwriting has provided me with a way to at least ask.”

While demoing this collection of songs at an artist residency in Banff, it dawned on Larsen that the experience of loss exists outside of losing someone; we mourn places and memories, too. “The definition of the word “loss” changes all the time for me,” says Larsen. “What does it mean to have truly lost someone? Something? If I lose something, how do I know for certain that I’ve lost it for good? As I reflected on the experience of losing my first love, I wrote songs that allowed me to explore these trains of thought.” The result was a record that bridges the gaps between I, you, and we to narrate an intentional mediation on what it means to experience grief as young queer person.

The first voice we hear on Larsen’s album is that of their first love; “Ready?” she asks. As if to answer her, Good Grief then begins with an audio recording from 2013 of Larsen and their high school friends singing Sufjan Stevens’ song "The Predatory Wasp Of The Palisades Is Out To Get Us!" around a campfire. “Loss is a wasp’s sting,” says Larsen. “This Sufjan song has been dear to me for a long time, but I understood it very differently after my first love passed away.”

When Larsen was recording Good Grief, they sought out old voice memos to use as interludes in between songs. “I wanted to make the music sound more human,” Larsen admits. “Eventually, I found the campfire recording from the tenth grade, and I was immediately struck by the fact that the most prominent voice is that of my first love.” Larsen edited the clip down to about thirty seconds in order to highlight several lines in the song which are, to them, the most poignant with regards to the theme of loss. Larsen shares: “When the record starts and my ex says ‘ready?’, part of me knows that she’s asking my friends and I if we were ready to sing around that fire all those years ago, but there’s also a part of me that feels like – in some way – she’s asking grown-up-me if I’m ‘ready’ to share my songs about grief now.”

The album quickly unfurls like a bildungsroman, touching on love, loss, growing up, growing old, moving on, and moving forward. Songs like “Teenage Love” and “Sweater Weather'' conjure vivid landscapes of memory through Larsen’s lyricism, which is conversational and inviting, while being intimate and candid. Community and friendship are central to the song “People Who Mean So Much To Me”, which features vocals from Larsen’s close friend and fellow musician, Leith Ross. Larsen explains: “this song is composed of vignettes about three distinct relationships that I had fostered throughout the span of a single year. I wrote it during the pandemic, while I was really missing community.” To Larsen, the song is a reminder to them that, even when they’re feeling lonely and isolated, they will continue to cross paths with wonderful people and build meaningful relationships.

Larsen co-produced the record with fellow musician Graham Ereaux. Good Grief was recorded at Ereaux’s studio in Liverpool, Nova Scotia, where Larsen and Ereaux were joined by multi-instrumentalist Evan Matthews. “There was such an advantage to bringing my songs to two people who are not intimately connected to my experiences. Neither Evan nor Graham listened to my songs as artifacts of grief, but rather, they heard them as compositional elements.” With the record in hand, Larsen enlisted Howard Bilerman (Leonard Cohen, Arcade Fire) to mix the record, back home in Montreal.

The five years that it took to write Good Grief encompass so many aspects of Larsen’s life, capturing a coming-of-age story and documenting an ongoing process – of an artist and of a human being – as they try to navigate the terrain of their existence and that of those around them. It’s an experience of their loss but also honours the person that was lost to them. The record closes with a reprise of the “Wasps” audio recording, marrying the past and present as the old voice memo slowly fades into a newer one. Present-day Larsen sings, “I can tell you I love her each day”: a testament to the fact that their grief is –  finally – good.

Today, Jesse Northey’s new record Onion Knight is officially released and the celebrated songwriter, producer, and engineer will set off on the road for a run of tour dates beginning tomorrow. Full tour dates can be found below.

To celebrate the album’s release, Northey is sharing the new video for “Picking The Numbers” from director Laura La France. “This song is a personal deep dive,” says Northey. “It's about an affinity for keno, vague memories of driving around rural Montana as a child, the family dog going to ‘the farm’, and an affirmation that we're going to win big later down the road!”

La France adds that, “the song is about gambling, getting rich, and a dog being put down. When we planned to do the shoot in Vegas, I decided to just wing it and see what we came up with. When the film came back from the lab, I knew we had something as overwhelming and over the top as Sin City itself. I don't think we could have planned it better if we tried.”

MORE ABOUT ONION KNIGHT
If one was to analyze the DNA of Jesse Northey music, its double helix might look an awful lot like a sharp insider's take on the world of capital “P” pop songcraft. A decade and change into his career, Northey has long established his own voice as a songwriter, but the music palpably pulses with inspiration from the decades' worth of tune-smiths that have come before him. In tandem with lyrics that explore the myriad ways in which we need to dismantle the artifice of masculinity, societal norms, and creativity-sapping careerist ambitions, this is music firmly rooted in the classics, but cut with a clear-eyed contemporary viewpoint.

On his new album Onion Knight, Northey presents a widescreen distillation of these influences, brought to life with exceptional warmth and attention to detail by ace producer Thomas D’Arcy (The Sheepdogs, NOBRO, Yukon Blonde) at Taurus Studios in Toronto. “Onions are associated with crying,” Northey says. “I wanted to conjure an imagery that confronts the stoic heroism associated with masculinity and take a jab at it.” And he's done just that: the feel of Onion Knight is classic but also urgent, tackling modern anxieties and buffered by a warm, rich psychedelia that is inviting as it is pristine.

The drums are lush and up front, the bass melodic and McCartney-esque, and the songs are driven by piano, vintage keyboards, and shimmering synths. All of these elements readily bring to mind titans of song such as Elliott Smith, Harry Nilsson, Aimee Mann, and Spoon, as well as contemporaries such as Chris Cohen and Andy Shauf.

MORE ABOUT JESSE NORTHEY
Northey has maintained a parallel career behind the curtains of the music world. His work as an engineer and producer has afforded him plenty of time to hone his studio skills, and his place on the High Priestess Publishing roster has led to songs appearing in far flung places such as the Amazon's documentary on Pete Buttigieig, former Indiana Mayor turned presidential candidate. As the leader of Jesse & The Dandelions, he has shared stages with Hollerado, Said the Whale, and July Talk, and toured extensively in Japan. And since 2020, he's been the man behind Victory Pool Records, a record label and management company, helping to shepherd an impressive variety of acts such as Witch Prophet, The Deep Dark Woods, Marlaena Moore, Ghost Woman and Ombiigizi.

MEGAN NASH SHARES NEW VIDEO FOR “ARE WE STILL IN LOVE?”

NEW LP, SOFT FOCUS FUTURES, OUT NOW VIA ACRONYM RECORDS

“Nash is clearly a fan of Williams, and she was an excellent fit to introduce her, particularly with a standout performance of “Are We Still in Love?” that touches on vanishing Saskatchewan small towns.” Saskatoon Star Phoenix, on Megan Nash’s opening performance for Lucinda Williams

“Bluesy and emotionally evocative, Nash drives through the 10 tracks with rich, powerhouse vocals that wrap their arms around listeners. Lyrically masterful, Soft Focus Futures harkens back to Elizabeth Smart's classic novel, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept.” Exclaim! On ‘Soft Focus Futures’

Today, Megan Nash (She / They) is sharing the new video for “Are We Still In Love?” from their most recent LP, Soft Focus Futures. “Are We Still in Love?” is a song about change. When you sell the farm, you’re not only changing professions, you’re changing your way of life. “Growing up, I always heard stories of what things used to be like,” says Nash. “More family farms, packed hall dances, fowl suppers so big that my folks would complain about the lack of elbow room. The verses I left vague to reflect numerous towns, villages, hamlets, etc. This could be anywhere.

“I found myself going through a divorce in a ghost town; a town that used to be larger, a love that used to be full. This song and music video draws the parallels between losing your way of life and losing your love. It’s a song for the lonely and my own… tribute if you will, to the little farm I was raised on, my high school graduating class of 10, and to every abandoned farmhouse on the prairie horizon.

“A wedding dress. Something I never thought I would buy but when I did, I treated myself. You usually plan on only wearing it once but after writing this song during the crumbling of my marriage, it felt appropriate to me to give it one more wear. I wanted to make a one take music video for this song that was simple, emotional, and heartfelt. Rob White from Hot Tag Films made the visions in my mind unfold on the screen. I made this music video with good friends on a hot prairie day. I hope you enjoy it.”

After performing at Regina Folk Festival this past weekend, Megan will next hit the stage at Americana Fest in Nashville and BreakOut West in Calgary in September. Full tour dates are below.

MORE ABOUT SOFT FOCUS FUTURES
Throughout their self-produced sophomore album Soft Focus Futures, Megan Nash mines the death of her marriage for clues that could decode its demise and set her on a path toward some sort of stability in self. In the process, they achieve a distillation of heartache and its attendant, all-consuming power that arrives like a 100-year flood in blossoming crescendos buoyed by precise poetry evoking unnatural disasters, the tyranny of silence, old dogs, and the isolation of life in the country. The blue hues, unsteady triumph, and emotional grandeur of Soft Focus Futures earns a spiritual kinship with author Elizabeth Smart’s masterpiece, By Grand Central Station I Sat Down and Wept, about Smart’s affair with George Barker. “The water submerges and blends, but I am not dead,” Smart writes about grief and love. “O I am not dead. I am under the sea. The entire sea is on top of me.”

WATCH AND SHARE “MY OWN HEART” LYRIC VIDEO

After “Table For One” sets a scene of quiet devastation with a sparse acoustic guitar strum, the slow-building tidal wave of “Artifact” reveals the loneliness of separation’s aftermath: ‘Our love is an island where we used to live,’ Nash sings over the song’s dreamy wash. ‘It was swallowed by the ocean.’ With “My Own Heart”, she seeks a cosmos-sized space in which she’s able to learn to be alone with herself; the more grounded, guitar-fuelled “Coffee” hammers home the less desirable realities of that isolation, like bad dates and the fear that that accompanies being on your own in a creaky old house. With incisive, earthy verse, Nash invokes the particularities of their Prairie home, parsing through childhood memories of her family’s small farm and searching for her place in that lineage with “Another Silent Night”, while using the vernacular of small-town gossip to paint a lonesome rural scene on “Are We Still In Love?” The sonic scope of “Chew Quietly/Clean Slate” looms vast over anxieties about meeting someone new, deploying epic, frenzied breakdowns to communicate inner turmoil. As the curtain closes, Nash is careful to avoid claiming resolution or closure—the nature of those concepts are fickle at best—and instead chooses to let her heart beat out ‘the poisonous rhythm of the truth.’ But the silence lingering in the exhales intertwined at the end of “Table For One (Reprise)” begins to, maybe, carve out space once again for a great flood of love.

Soft Focus Futures was released on what would’ve been the fourth anniversary of her wedding — November 3, 2021. To build the album’s lush soundscapes, Nash turned to their long-time musical co-conspirators the Best of Intentions, composed of talented multi-instrumentalists Dana Rempel, Darnell Stewart, and Tanner Wilhelm Hale. Additional contributions feature Brady Frank, Dalton Lam, Digawolf, Stacy Tinant, Jenna Nash, Logan Amon, and Megan’s wizened dog Shiloh, to whom she dedicates a poem in the liner notes of the album. Soft Focus Futures was officially engineered by Dana Rempel, but in most cases, because of pandemic restrictions, each contributing player individually recorded their own parts in a collective act of camaraderie that testifies to the closeness of those involved and their faith in the quality of Nash’s work. Despite the distance, Soft Focus Futures is a cohesive creation that sounds as though it was made in the presence of dear friends so close they could breathe on one another. The album was mixed and mastered by Justin Bender at Divergent Sounds Studio.

The recognition back home is in no small part due to her long and winding history of hitting the road, where she’s done international showcases in the United States, the UK, Germany, and Estonia on top of countless gigs in Canada’s small towns and sprawling metropolises.
