Field Guide (aka Dylan MacDonald) is a weaver of worlds. Built around his inviting voice and wrapped in warm textures, his self-titled sophomore full-length builds his most engaging world yet. It lives in a place between darkness and hopefulness with unshakeable melodies at its heart. “Melody is what makes words fall out of my mouth,” MacDonald says. “It’s disarming. When I find a melody that represents my internal world, I drop my guard. I allow the words to appear out of thin air without judgement. A lot of these songs came to life that way. I wasn’t trying to make anything, but the songs became a home for words that I wasn’t yet ready to write on the page.”

Today, Field Guide is sharing the first single from the LP, “Leave You Lonely”, a track about “devotion,” says MacDonald. “It’s about fighting complacency. Having doubts is human, but swallowing those feelings can often lead us into a haze of disconnection. It’s rare to hold only one feeling at a time and I’ve been learning to embrace the myriad of emotions that come with being alive, and in love. This song represents a beautiful and imperfect love, the recording is the same — no editing, a one take (and sometimes out of tune) vocal."

The single arrives with a video that was made en route from Sierra Vista, Arizona to San Diego, California. “Despite the fact that ‘Leave You Lonely’ was recorded during one of Manitoba’s coldest winters in decades, the desert seemed to have a place in the story of the song,” MacDonald explains. “The intense heat made us move slow. That lethargy paired with the choice of a slow frame rate made me feel as though I could move my body to the music without feeling as inhibited as I normally might. Filming this video felt a lot like listening back to a demo of a new song, or even mixes of the final recording — I’ll often wander around the house or outside on a walk feeling pleased to have accurately captured my interior world in song."

MORE ABOUT FIELD GUIDE
The past few years haven’t allowed for much escape from our interior worlds. There’s been a lot to move through, and many things can be true at once. This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection of those truths – loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new, feeling joy in the melancholy, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it.

The album is also alive with the people and places that surrounded its creation. Vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain National Park in a woodstove-heated cabin during one of Manitoba’s coldest winters in years. Bass and drums were tracked at Breakglass Studios in Montreal, a room that already felt familiar from falling in love with the records of tour-mate Leif Vollebekk. Final overdubbing took place at Monarch Studios in Vancouver surrounded by trusted engineers and friends. And constant inspiration was found in his circle of Winnipeg creators working away on their own projects. Like The Big Pink house – Boy Golden, Slow Spirit, Roman Clarke, Kris Ulrich, and others dropped in on each other to share demos and often lend their sounds to each other’s albums.

Beyond his hometown, Field Guide has had the opportunity to meet some heroes and new friends. He’s supported Leif Vollebekk, Bahamas, SYML, Wild Rivers, JP Saxe, and Penny & Sparrow on their tours this year. He’s built a legion of fans online and on the road. So, while this is a solo album that invites the listener inside Field Guide’s inner monologue world, it really is meant to be lived in together. “These are the truest, rawest songs that I’ve ever written. I’ve never felt so sure about something I’ve made before. And now, it’s yours.”

“One of my favourite guitarists has a new album out. Great songs with great changes and great playing” John Mayer

"He cannot be stopped. ...showing off not only his guitar playing but his songwriting" - Talia Schlanger (On CBC q)

“smooth, soulful... The expertly self-produced sound is a nice mixture of slide guitar, bass, and that popping percussion, with Ariel’s creamy vocals on top.” - Great Dark Wonder

This fall, after an extensive run overseas, Ariel Posen will return to Canada for a string of dates supporting his new EP, Downtown. Full tour dates can be found below. Today, Posen is sharing the live video for “Say It Again”, a song written together with dear friend, Alexa Dirks (Begonia) in the summer of 2019. “The song is a classic example of a person who has done wrong in a relationship, and hasn't quite learned how to change,” says Posen. “So many people in the world rely on their partner for help rather than looking from within to help themselves and change. This is from the perspective of a person who thinks they've learnt, but would rather their partner just pretend and act like everything is fine.”

MORE ABOUT THE DOWNTOWN EP
Musically, Downtown explores some new territories which Posen felt “like there were some extremely exciting musical things happening. Therefore, it felt right to make the Downtown EP. I love each of these songs, and they really have a cohesiveness.”

The album was recorded in the Summer and Fall of 2021 in Montreal, Winnipeg, and Norwich, UK, and then mixed in Los Angeles. “Although we were all afar when we recorded this project, I feel like we could not have been more in tune with each other and understood the assignment in serving these songs to bring a musical and lyrical theme to fruition,” says Posen.

MORE ABOUT ARIEL POSEN
Ariel Posen's music occupies the space between genres. It's a rootsy sound that nods to his influences — heartland rock & roll, electrified Americana, blue-eyed soul, R&B, Beatles-inspired pop — while still moving forward, pushing Posen into territory that's uniquely his own.

Posen began recording his last album, Headway, in December 2019, one week after wrapping up an international tour in support of his acclaimed debut, How Long. He'd been on the road for a year and a half, playing shows across the U.K., Europe, America, and his native Canada. Along the way, Posen had received standing ovations not only from his audiences, but also from outlets like Rolling Stone, who dubbed him "a modern-day guitar hero," Music Radar listing him as a fan voted top 10 rock guitarist of the year and the Western Canadian Music Awards who nominated him for Breakout Artist of the Year."

Coming back home to Winnipeg, he began sifting through the new songs he'd written between tour dates. Many of them had already been tested on the road, their arrangements whittled into shape by a group of road warriors at the top of their game. Practically all of them were about the process of evolution — of making progress in life, love, and all points in between. Those themes were reflected in the music itself, which presented a crisper, clearer picture of Posen as a songwriter.

Ruby Singh is a descendant of the land of five rivers and the Moon itself, with Rajput lineage from the edge of the Thar desert. The Future Ancestors come together to conjure sonic remedies to heal, guide and inspire the spirits of our kin, both known and unknown, seen and unseen. From celestial to terrestrial, spanning ancient realms into what's to come, the Future Ancestors kick up stardust from the shelves of our spirits to bring joy into these trying times.

Singh has assembled yet another formidable crew with long intertwined destinies to undertake these visions; Khari Wendell McClelland and Holly Eccleston bring deep soul and harmony with their gift of song; The JUNO Award winning talents of Gord Grdina on oud and guitar; holding down the rhythm section are the phenom Kenton Loewen on drums, typewriters, dried flowers and glass bottles with the deep grooves of Peter Schmitt on bass; Paul Finlay crossfades and scratches like a painter across a canvas; and rounding out the incredible talent on this album are the Grammy and JUNO award winning flavours of producer Chin Injeti. The album was recorded and mixed by the gift that is John Raham at AfterLife Studios on the the lands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səl̓ílwətaʔɬ/Selilwitulh Nations (Vancouver BC).

Tales of home and wandering, love and longing, justice and hope envelop this album. Weaving together inspiration from the Delta Blues and Qawaali to golden era Hip Hop by chopping and stitching samples into a tapestry of spirit expressed. He then gathered this stellar matrix of artist kin to embody and elevate the sound and feel.

A primal scream can be heard to begin the first single. “Dog Bone”, and a fierce demand for freedom and liberation is laid out over an infectious groove from the perspective of a pack of street dogs. With its bouncy and mischievous nature, the song also acts as a warning for anyone that would try to inhibit those freedoms. The Flavourcel Collective are behind the stunning animated music video. With a psychedelic backdrop we follow 3 dogs as they lay chase to their oppressors unravelling and ripping apart the leash that they tried to put on them. Playful and kinetic, the video is a fevered dream into the often surreal journey towards emancipation.

The inspiration for “Dog Bone” came as Singh observed a pack of street dogs in Delhi, "I was struck by their resilience and their passion for remaining wild amidst their life in the city. Watching how they stuck up for each other and how they ran the neighbourhoods they rolled through, got me into writing some raps and the song was born. I think our world is need of some rewilding and so i leaned into that for the this song"

“This album has been brewing for some time, making sure we added all the right ingredients as needed,” says Singh. “For the better part of a decade, I've been writing these songs on napkins, in voice memos and on anything that could record or I could scribble on. When I initially started the project I brought in the amazing Allison Russell to sing the hook on ‘Coming Home’ and then she of course added her own spin to it, which we put into the scratching and mixing hands of Paul Finlay to treat those recordings as samples. Early in the process I brought in the talented Holly Eccleston and Khari Wendell McClelland to jam out the ideas and there was some serious chemistry bouncing between us in my small home studio. I knew I had to take my time to get the sound right and it's a dream to have these incredible artists all contribute their talents to this album.”
