Recently, Ellen Froese announced her upcoming LP, For Each Flower Growing, produced by Sam Corbett (The Sheepdogs) and due out November 10 via Victory Pool Records. Today, the Saskatchewan songwriter is sharing another track from the album, “Like You’re Looking At Me”, a song about “deep insecurity,” says Froese. “Stylistically, I was listening to a lot of Olivia Newton-John and the Bee Gees when I wrote it, and I wanted it to sound a bit over-the-top desperate and indulgent.”

Currently on tour in Europe, at the end of the month Ellen will return to Canada for a run of Western Canadian dates supporting The Deep Dark Woods before settling in for a month-long residency at Toronto’s Cameron House. Full tour dates can be found below.

MORE ABOUT ELLEN FROESE
Clever and slightly self-deprecating, Ellen Froese’ songs get into the places of your heart that hold both those quieter melancholic feelings and those moments of warm contentment that make you want to dance shoulder to shoulder with whoever is around. Growing up on a dairy farm in the heart of Saskatchewan, Ellen’s passion for music started at an early age, beginning with a love of listening to the classics in her dad’s truck. But it was discovering Neil Young that drove her to a love of songwriting. Hearing his music made her quit piano lessons to instead teach herself guitar. The beginning of her career was heavily influenced by classic folk and bluegrass.

Since her days with In With The Old, a band which Ellen lovingly calls her “teenage bluegrass band,” which produced two albums and toured extensively, Ellen has performed in various forms, from solo singer-songwriter, to member of a duo, to being in a full band. Her influences have expanded from traditional bluegrass music to include musicians such as Tia Blake, Gordon Lightfoot, and Buffy Sainte-Marie. Now with three solo albums and one forthcoming, Ellen’s sound has evolved (though she’s never stopped being obsessed with folk music). Her music now adds elements of rock n’ roll, classic country ballads, honky-tonk, and 1970s psychedelic pop grooves while still being grounded in the bluegrass tradition of a working-class relatability.

Despite a love of touring and van life, Saskatchewan is still home to Ellen. She can often be found at one of her favourite venues in Saskatoon, the Broadway Theatre, slinging beers for other artists’ shows. Or sometimes, she moves a little further down the street to play a honky-tonk night, featuring everyone’s favourite country covers, at Amigos Cantina. With a charismatic and charming stage presence, she is quick to bring up others onstage.

In winter 2021, Ellen released “In The Sun”, the first of two singles featuring collaborations with Chris Mason (The Deep Dark Woods) and Clayton Linthicum (Kacy and Clayton). “‘In The Sun’ is about conflict and feeling helpless, unable to get your point across. It's about the feeling of not being heard, and just wanting to escape the cycle of thought - planning your next move, and thinking and thinking about what you could say to make them hear and understand you.” says Froese. The second single, also featuring Chris and Clayton, “Did You Have a Love Before”, is only getting fans more and more excited for what’s coming next.

“It’s tough to see your own struggles affect someone you love—watching them take on your heaviness can really bring on a feeling of guilt,” says Field Guide (the musical moniker of Dylan MacDonald) of the new track “You Could Be Free”, from his upcoming self-titled LP. “When I wrote this, I was feeling a need to be pushed out of the dark place that I was in, I felt myself thinking ‘don’t accept this from me’.”

MORE ABOUT FIELD GUIDE

Field Guide is a weaver of worlds. Built around his inviting voice and wrapped in warm textures, his self-titled sophomore full-length builds his most engaging world yet. Set for release on October 28 via Birthday Cake Records, the album lives in a place between darkness and hopefulness with unshakeable melodies at its heart. “Melody is what makes words fall out of my mouth,” MacDonald says. “It’s disarming. When I find a melody that represents my internal world, I drop my guard. I allow the words to appear out of thin air without judgement. A lot of these songs came to life that way. I wasn’t trying to make anything, but the songs became a home for words that I wasn’t yet ready to write on the page.”

The past few years haven’t allowed for much escape from our interior worlds. There’s been a lot to move through, and many things can be true at once. This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection of those truths – loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new, feeling joy in the melancholy, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it.

The album is also alive with the people and places that surrounded its creation. Vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain National Park in a woodstove-heated cabin during one of Manitoba’s coldest winters in years. Bass and drums were tracked at Breakglass Studios in Montreal, a room that already felt familiar from falling in love with the records of tour-mate Leif Vollebekk. Final overdubbing took place at Monarch Studios in Vancouver surrounded by trusted engineers and friends. And constant inspiration was found in his circle of Winnipeg creators working away on their own projects. Like The Big Pink house – Boy Golden, Slow Spirit, Roman Clarke, Kris Ulrich, and others dropped in on each other to share demos and often lend their sounds to each other’s albums.

Beyond his hometown, Field Guide has had the opportunity to meet some heroes and new friends. He’s supported Leif Vollebekk, Bahamas, SYML, Wild Rivers, JP Saxe, and Penny & Sparrow on their tours this year. He’s built a legion of fans online and on the road. So, while this is a solo album that invites the listener inside Field Guide’s inner monologue world, it really is meant to be lived in together. “These are the truest, rawest songs that I’ve ever written. I’ve never felt so sure about something I’ve made before. And now, it’s yours.”

PUP SHARES TWO NEW TRACKS FROM UPCOMING LIVE LP

AND “TOTALLY FINE” HERE

NORTH AMERICAN TOUR DATES CONTINUE THIS WEEK

ACCLAIMED NEW LP, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, OUT NOW

“The Toronto band Pup has long made frenetic punk-pop with neat verse-chorus-bridge structures underlying Stefan Babcock’s raucously overwrought and fully self-aware lead vocals.” - New York Times

"PUP’s fourth album, “The Unraveling of PUPTheBand,” finds the quartet completely removing any of the limits left on their music, pushing things as far as possible" - The New Yorker

“Hearts on their sleeves, the group captures the rage and frustration of human fallibility with crashing drums and infectious irreverence" - NPR Music

"The new songs are boisterous, catchy, and meta while also earnestly wading through the nuances of depression in a manner often reserved for “confessional” indie rock…an instant mood-booster." - Pitchfork

“transmuting life’s frustrations into unhinged visceral joy” - Stereogum (Album of the Week)

“‘The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND’...reinforces the message that it’s okay to be yourself, no matter who you are." - Vulture

"PUP’s winning recipe is 49% snark, 51% heart" - Bandcamp (Album of the Day)

"a triumphant, impassioned punk record full of massive choruses and dumb jokes." - The FADER

"it's enraged, it's anthemic, it's passionate, it's emotional" - The Needle Drop

Toronto punk heroes PUP— comprised of Stefan Babcock, Nestor Chumak, Zack Mykula, and Steve Sladkowski— released their incredible, ambitious and aptly titled fourth album, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, earlier this year. The record earned universal acclaim, countless Top 10 Billboard chart positions including #1 Heatseekers, Top New Artists Albums and Alternative New Artist Albums, and a slew of sold-out shows. They recently announced a live EP out on October 12 entitled PUP Unravels Live In Front Of Everyone They Know, which features tracks off of the new album and was recorded across multiple shows in the band’s hometown of Toronto earlier this year. Today they share two new songs off the EP, “Four Chords” and “Totally Fine”.

"We’ve been starting most shows the same way as the record - with me playing ‘4 chords’ on my own on my little microkorg, “ says Stefan Babcock. “It starts really quiet and everyone is staring at me and I always fuck it up and it’s great coz the show can only go up from there. I love going from a sloppy low key  song to a tight loud ripper. It’s the two extremes of PUP, and we like everyone to know what they’re getting into when they put on a record or come to a show."

AND “TOTALLY FINE” HERE

THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND was recorded and mixed over the course of five weeks in the summer of 2021, in GRAMMY Award-winning producer Peter Katis’ bat-filled mansion in Connecticut. Full of typically furious, ridiculous and anthemic songs, the recording process allowed PUP to push themselves further than ever before. With more time in the studio, they were able to craft their songs sonically in a way they were unable to in the past, and allowed themselves to incorporate new instruments like piano, synths, horns, and more for the first time. Though made in madness-inducing isolation (aside from Peter and the bats, of course), PUP were remotely joined on the album by Sarah from illuminati hotties, Kathryn from NOBRO, Mel from Casper Skulls, and Erik from Remo Drive. The result is not just the next PUP record, but the *most* PUP record.
