“Dealing in the themes of recovery, loss and love, Lapell's latest is the new generation's heart-rending answer to Tapestry's call.” Exclaim!

“...sounds quite timeless, as if all the songs could have been recorded yesterday or decades ago.”  Americana UK

“…an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice. …a mix of ballads, odes, and arresting vignettes.” No Depression

So far this year, Abigail Lapell’s newest album, Stolen Time, was nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award and the acclaimed songwriter spent some time on the road with Donovan Woods, label mate Jenny Berkel, and Ken Yates. Today, she is announcing another run of dates throughout the US and Canada. Full Dates can be found below.

If you’re wondering what to expect when you see Abigail live, the acclaimed songwriter is also sharing a video of the band performing “Old Flames” live at the Dakota Tavern in Toronto, during the album launch for Stolen Time. The performance features the great Jenny Berkel on vocals along with Dan Fortin on bass, Jake Oelrichs on drums and Rich Burnett on steel. “It was a really special night; we played the album front-to-back, and it was one of my first shows with a live band since things shut down in 2020 -- also my first time performing some of the songs with a live audience,” says Lapell.

Propelled by a kick drum heartbeat, “Old Flames” reflects the push and pull of a smouldering, on-again-off-again romance, with fiery imagery that draws from and deconstructs love song tropes and clichés. Melodic finger style guitar mimics flickering embers, set off by sparks of pizzicato lap steel and ambient guitar textures. With its rich sound and warm glow of long-deferred longing, “Old Flames” sounds almost like an answer song to Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m On Fire.”

MORE ABOUT ABIGAIL LAPELL
Over the past decade and three spellbinding albums, Lapell has garnered two Canadian Folk Music Awards (English Songwriter of the Year in 2020 and Contemporary Album of the Year in 2017), hit number one on Canadian folk radio, and accrued a staggering 13 million+ Spotify streams while touring widely across Canada, the U.S., and Europe.

Her latest LP, Stolen Time, out now via Outside Music, strikes a fine balance between her hushed acoustic debut, Great Survivor, and her two rockier, Chris Stringer produced records, Hide Nor Hair and Getaway. Stolen Time brings a live-off-the-floor 70s folk-rock vibe with more structural experimentation to the table on songs that feel expansive in their scope; unhurried, psychedelic, and other-worldly.

JENNY BERKEL NEW EP, OUT TODAY, SHARES NEW TRACK

THE QUIET BETWEEN, THE NEW EP FROM JENNY BERKEL, OUT TODAY VIA OUTSIDE MUSIC

Today, Jenny Berkel’s new EP, The Quiet Between, is available to stream everywhere, courtesy of Outside Music. The Quiet Between, written in the midst of the pandemic – and in the midst of the surreal stillness created by the pandemic – finds a different way of parsing through a kaleidoscopic world; written with quiet intention and attention, and more intimately recorded than previous albums, the EP features five songs that are interpretations of poems by writers Síle Englert, Sydney Hegele, Kevin Andrew Heslop, David Janzen, and Ryanne Kap, all of whom were part of Berkel’s artistic community in London, Ontario.

Though still quiet and spare, “Blush On” is the most upbeat of the five songs on Jenny Berkel’s new EP. Based on “June First”, a poem by Sydney Hegele (author of The Pump, Invisible Publishing, which was recently a finalist for the 2022 Trillium Book Award), this is a simple and sweet love song. Evoking Tucker Zimmerman with its layering of guitars and movement, the song features Ryan Boldt (The Deep Dark Woods) on vocals as well as an arrangement of strings, melodica, and concertina, adding another layer of softness to the recording.

“It’s a very soft poem, one that speaks to the feeling of rest and safety that can accompany love,” says Berkel. “I wanted the recording to feel that way too – the melodica, concertina, and violin drones and parts cradle the song.”

MORE ABOUT THE QUIET BETWEEN
When poet and songwriter Jenny Berkel wrote her recent album, These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving, she was living alone in a tiny apartment full of radiant light and the ever-present soundscape of a leaky bath faucet. It was a sudden move at the time—a spontaneous departure from touring, bustling city life, being many things to many people—that landed Berkel in a space of self-imposed stillness. “The songs on These Are the Sounds Left from Leaving are a study of proximity, bringing big fears into small spaces,” says Berkel, reflecting on the album. “They’re intimate examinations of a world that often overwhelms.”

“Light it Slant”, the first single, juxtaposes melancholy with an undercurrent of hope. Based on “High Level Bridge”, a poem by writer and teacher David Janzen (author of nature: nurture, Baseline Press), the song investigates the nature of wisdom as well as the wisdom held within the quiet of nature. The instruments swell gently together before the chorus, where Misha Bower’s (The Bruce Peninsula) harmonies lift the song out of its heaviness. “Westbound” is a creaky and hushed piano ballad. Based on “Westbound to London”, a poem by writer Ryanne Kap (author of goodbye already, Frog Hollow Press), the song is full of an aching longing. Recorded almost by accident–the engineer was testing levels while Berkel was working out the arrangement on the piano–the recording captures the vulnerability of the lyrics and of longing itself. Though still quiet and spare, “Blush On” is the most upbeat of the five songs on The Quiet Between. Based on “June First”, a poem by Sydney Hegele (author of The Pump, Invisible Publishing, a recent finalist for the 2022 Trillium Book Award), the song features Ryan Boldt (The Deep Dark Woods) and evokes Tucker Zimmerman with its layering of guitars and movement.

The album was recorded over several sleepy winter days at the Sugar Shack in London, Ontario; the sparseness of the songs reflects the new quiet imposed by the pandemic while also allowing the poetry of Berkel’s collaborators to be at the forefront. Recorded with only the engineer (Simon Larochette) and Ryan Boldt present, the songs feature Berkel and Boldt with additional flourishes by Misha Bower, Simon Larochette, and Kelly Larochette. From poem to song to recording, The Quiet Between relies heavily upon and emphasizes the significance of one’s local community

Whether you’re reading Berkel’s poetry—in her debut chapbook Grease Dogs with Baseline Press—or listening to her recordings, Pale Moon Kid (2016), These Are the Sounds Left From Leaving (2022), and now The Quiet Between, you’ll experience her drawing layers of far-reaching concern into particular moments, like concentric waves rippling inward toward a lone cast stone. A songwriter immersed in poetry, a poet immersed in music—her work in all its forms is an invitation into a world of relatable introspection, in which even absences can be sculpted into vividly memorable verse.

“... casts back to timeless memories of fumbling early romance—first kisses, messy breakups, and short-lived flirtations are all soundtracked by weightless indie pop and R&B stylings”
 – Under The Radar

“It’s a striking debut, an unguarded, ultra-personal tapestry—stories of heartbreak and struggle, sung in her soothing, signature voice”
– SPIN

“‘Things’ is an unadulterated look at youthful insecurities and unrequited affection. Over a somber but punchy backdrop, she delivers an evocative performance that is ripe with honesty” – EARMILK

The 22-year-old singer-songwriter, Charlie Houston is today sharing her second EP, Bad Posture – out via Arts & Crafts – which follows on from her Spotify USA Viral 50 track, "Wide Awake", which she recorded with the Grammy Award-nominated electronic duo, ODESZA. Charlie has just wrapped up a mammoth sold-out stadium tour with ODESZA and is concluding her cross-Canada support tour with JUNO Award 2022 Artist Of The Year, Charlotte Cardin in November, she will also perform a headline set at Toronto's Drake Underground on October 27.

Speaking about the focus track on the EP, "Falling Out", Charlie says, "Falling out of love isn’t really something you have control over. Sometimes feelings just naturally fade away and there’s no clear reason why. In my experience, these situations can be even harder because you can catch yourself wishing to still feel that way."

When discussing the wider EP release, she continues to say:  “All these songs focus on different emotions that have a direct effect on my posture,” says Houston. “When I’m sad, anxious, nervous, or confused my posture gets worse, and I clench my jaw. I hold so much of my emotion in my neck and jaw. The writing of all these songs caused some serious strain on my neck. Not just from looking down at the paper but the way the feelings that inspired the songs manifest physically in my body."

"Lately", "Dinosaurs in the Garden", and "Falling Out", are all about “the feelings surrounding the end of a relationship,” explains Houston. “Not a bad ending in the way that someone did something wrong, but just a natural ending or loss of feelings. In my experience this sort of dissolution is almost worse because there is no event or action to blame. Feelings just naturally faded away and that’s a sad thing.”

Houston, whose “contemporary R&B-inflected pop straightforwardly addresses the meaningful mundanities of Gen Z life” (Bandcamp) is following her 2021 debut five-song EP, I Hate Spring which received praise from Zane Lowe, Rolling Stone, and SPIN, while landing a Spotify Times Square Billboard.
