MORE ABOUT FIELD GUIDE
Field Guide is a weaver of worlds. Built around his inviting voice and wrapped in warm textures, his self-titled sophomore full-length builds his most engaging world yet. Set for release on October 28 via Birthday Cake Records, the album lives in a place between darkness and hopefulness with unshakeable melodies at its heart. “Melody is what makes words fall out of my mouth,” MacDonald says. “It’s disarming. When I find a melody that represents my internal world, I drop my guard. I allow the words to appear out of thin air without judgement. A lot of these songs came to life that way. I wasn’t trying to make anything, but the songs became a home for words that I wasn’t yet ready to write on the page.”

The past few years haven’t allowed for much escape from our interior worlds. There’s been a lot to move through, and many things can be true at once. This album lives at the sometimes-tense intersection of those truths – loving someone dearly while being pulled toward something new, feeling joy in the melancholy, a gratitude for deep friendship and an uncertainty of one’s place in it.

The album is also alive with the people and places that surrounded its creation. Vocals and acoustic guitars were recorded near Riding Mountain National Park in a woodstove-heated cabin during one of Manitoba’s coldest winters in years. Bass and drums were tracked at Breakglass Studios in Montreal, a room that already felt familiar from falling in love with the records of tour-mate Leif Vollebekk. Final overdubbing took place at Monarch Studios in Vancouver surrounded by trusted engineers and friends. And constant inspiration was found in his circle of Winnipeg creators working away on their own projects. Like The Big Pink house – Boy Golden, Slow Spirit, Roman Clarke, Kris Ulrich, and others dropped in on each other to share demos and often lend their sounds to each other’s albums.

Beyond his hometown, Field Guide has had the opportunity to meet some heroes and new friends. He’s supported Leif Vollebekk, Bahamas, SYML, Wild Rivers, JP Saxe, and Penny & Sparrow on their tours this year. He’s built a legion of fans online and on the road. So, while this is a solo album that invites the listener inside Field Guide’s inner monologue world, it really is meant to be lived in together. “These are the truest, rawest songs that I’ve ever written. I’ve never felt so sure about something I’ve made before. And now, it’s yours.”

Cots – the Montreal-based solo project of composer, singer, and guitarist Steph Yates – today shares "Moonlit Building," her first release since the 2021 debut album Disturbing Body, which CBC Music likened to Let It Die-era Feist, and MOJO described as "the sophistication of Everything But The Girl's Eden meets the sadness of Portuguese fado." Produced by Olivier Fairfield – member of FET.NAT, glitch duo Album, and contributor to the incomparable music of Andy Shauf, Timber Timbre, Last Ex and many more – "Moonlit Building" deepens the beautiful, somber, mysterious elements of Yates’s songwriting. Where Disturbing Body weaves elements of bossanova together with jazz and classical, Cots's askew folk takes on a cinematic noir quality with Fairfield's accompaniment: her crystalline voice and nylon guitar devolving in unison with his gravely baritone, cavernous guitar, and eroding rhythm.

Yates says: "I have long admired Olivier’s rhythmic sensibility and his knack for moodiness in production, and felt he might be a good match for this set of songs. Working in-studio together was collaborative and experimental: trying things out, trading off instruments, seeing what stuck."

“Moonlit Building” is accompanied by a music video created with director Sarafina Bortolon-Vettor and "a small crew of pals," wherein Yates is the protagonist of a surreal cinema noir-inspired scene. The tension of the unseen and the unknown fits the song’s im/balanced, decelerating beat.

“Moonlit Building” is the title track to a five song collection that will be released January 25, 2023 on Boiled Records, the Toronto experimental label who released Disturbing Body. The Moonlit Building EP deftly blends the hushed intimacy of Cots’s voice with the fringe musical influences of her roots in the Guelph, Ontario DIY scene, where she learned to be “loud, assertive, and unabashedly scrappy” in outfits like Esther Grey and Cupcake Ductape. A startling evolution of her lush sonic palette, the Moonlit Building EP further bends Cots’s spare and beautiful sound with a reshuffling of a Disturbing Body centerpiece “Flowers (Fresh Cut)” and the celestial lounge sound of “Devil Does.”

In the opening scenes of Jill Barber’s latest music video, there’s a palpable excitement as her taxi arrives at the home of fellow songwriter Grant Davidson—more likely recognized by readers as recording artist Slow Leaves. Barber is there for a very special occasion. The pair had written a song together over Zoom, mid-pandemic, but had never actually met in person. Luckily for all involved, Barber and Davidson had the wherewithal to capture their meeting and the first ever performance of “Joint Account”, the bounty from their internet co-write and track number four from Barber’s upcoming album Homemaker—out February 10, 2023 via Outside Music.

“The artist Slow Leaves is one that I have admired for a few years. We had never crossed paths in person, but I found his music very resonant and relatable,” recalls Barber. “During the pandemic I reached out to him about the possibility of us co-writing a song remotely over Zoom, and thankfully he agreed.” The pair wrote and recorded “Joint Account”, Davidson from his home studio in Winnipeg and Barber in Vancouver. “This duet playfully pulls back the curtain on a romantic proposition, exposing the inherent pragmatism in joining forces with another person,” says Barber. “It explores love, marriage, and commitment through the lens of a contract.”

After a warm embrace, the duo head into Davidson’s backyard to finally play “Joint Account” together, two voices interlocked over one guitar.

MORE ABOUT HOMEMAKER
With Homemaker, Barber delivers ten quietly profound songs about the complexities of motherhood, marriage, and the struggle to feel at home in one’s own identity. It was over the past few years that Jill began to feel an increasing disparity between her public image as “Canada’s Sweetheart” and the reality of her domestic life as an overwhelmed wife and mother. “One day I was headlining Massey Hall, and the next day I was sweeping a messy hall” she quips. “I was afraid to break the spell of the more romantic version of myself that I put out there in the world and which helped define my career, but I eventually reached a breaking point where I needed to write this album in order to reconcile these two versions of myself and feel okay about all aspects of who I am.” These songs tell the story of what happens to the young romantic when she reaches “middle age,” with Jill recasting “The Homemaker” as the hero of her own story, reclaiming its power for herself and others.

Written and recorded in Barber’s adopted hometown of Vancouver where she lives with her husband and two children, Homemaker is the first record that sees Jill in the role of a producer, co-producing with Erik Nielsen (City and Colour), and featuring some of Vancouver’s top session players like Paul Rigby (Neko Case), and Geoff Hicks (Colin James). “These songs are so damn personal, and such a deep reflection of my soul, that I felt an almost maternal instinct to both protect them and produce them for myself,” says Barber. “I really feel like I stepped into my own power as a producer on this record, with a lot of generous assistance from engineer/producer Erik Nielsen, who really championed my abilities in the studio.”

Homemaker is a return to Jill’s folk roots. Whereas her most recent albums have been bathed in lush string arrangements, Homemaker sees emotions laid bare, with a stripped-down production style reminiscent of her acclaimed debut Oh Heart and double JUNO Award-nominated follow-up, For All Time. But mostly, Homemaker is a statement about the humility and strength that it takes to do the meaningful work of creating a home for others, while still holding space for your own dreams.
