For the multi-national, genre-bending soul collective, Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their art. Formed while attending the University of Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. The band’s two studio albums, both produced by Grammy Award-winner Neal Pogue (KAYTRANADA, Tyler the Creator), have been praised in equal parts by tastemaker press (Complex, OkayPlayer) and established media (Billboard, American Songwriter). Over the years, they have collaborated with legends George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, members of Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders, and most recently, The Roots-affiliated rapper STS

After an original member left the group during the pandemic, the collective used the opportunity to expand their ranks for the first time in years, invigorating the band with a newfound creative energy and approach. Now, the collective has expanded their sonic palette, incorporating additional vocalists like Mel Pacifico, Wayne Tennant, and Jordan Brown into their creative company.

Today, Busty and the Bass share their new single "All The Things I Couldn't Say To You," a song about “finding the strength to tell the person you love how you feel," explains vocalist Alistar Blu. The single showcases each of those five vocalists singing the lead melody together, harmonizing over groovy piano lines interplaying with the guitar while triumphant horns build into a euphoric crescendo. The song, appropriately beginning with the lyrics “tired of living in the past,” represents a new era for the collective.

Today, acclaimed Indigenous storyteller and activist Logan Staats is sharing his latest single and video for “Holy Man”, a track that “was written alone on the side of a hotel bed,” says Staats. “In the past, being on the road for me was different. It was much more of a solitary and lonely experience. Living show to show, town to town, night to night can be challenging.

“I was missing my family and my community and I was in a period in my life where drugs and alcohol served as an unhealthy coping mechanism which in turn, reinforced a sort of self-imposed alienation and confinement.”

“The residential school system had skinned my family alive. As I was trying to put both those pieces and myself back together - I remember being on the road alone in my hotel room, and opening the bedside table and seeing a standard hotel copy of the Holy Bible. This song is about that moment, what that moment meant to me. At the time I had been searching for answers everywhere and the bible for me was a symbol of everything taken away from my family. It was also a moment where I realized I have a tremendous amount of healing to do. I had such a deep-rooted anger and hatred for the institutions of the so-called ‘Residential Schools and of the Catholic Church who used a ‘doctrine of discovery’ which corrupted the bible’s teachings in order to justify the genocide of generations of my people.”

“The lyrics to this song are quite literal. There are no hidden metaphors, it’s cut and dry. They capture a moment that I carry with me to this day.”

To Staats, music is a healing salve, contemplatively composed and offered to listeners in need of comfort. Since returning home, Staats has been able to create music authentically again, reclaiming his sound through honest storytelling and unvarnished, sometimes painful reflection.

Shane Ghostkeeper is most recognized for his songwriting, singing and guitar playing in the band Ghostkeeper. Shane spent his childhood and adolescence years isolated by Northern Alberta's geography (High Level, Rocky Lane, and Paddle Prairie Metis Settlement), listening to country music records and developing an admiration for individuals who had the ability to convey rich stories through song. Later he expanded his musical horizons beyond these roots, he found another world in the self-aware genres of art rock and experimental folk. Here, he developed his own storytelling language with which he could voice the traditional songwriting he grew up with. And now he comes full circle with years of education and experimentation to make his first Country music-inspired record. This exploration of Country music is a dedication and tribute to his family and the stories they share.

Today, he reveals his debut single, “Hunger Strike”, which arrives with a video from director Guillaume Carlier. On the track, Ghostkeeper says, “If a human being can be gauged by the weight of their love, then my Grandpa was a gravitational anomaly on the verge of supernova.”

“A few years after my Grandma passed away, he surrendered to his inconsolable heartbreak and loneliness and declared a hunger strike.  With his family by his side and his immense romance, he took his last breath, in peace, on their 68th wedding anniversary. Hiy Hiy”

The accompanying video is “inspired by Shane's grandfather, Roland, who actually did go on a hunger strike when his wife Olive passed away,” says Carlier. “They were all about two-stepping and having a good time. Despite the sad subject, it's an upbeat song that is designed to be played in any country bar. We shot this in a beautiful fall afternoon off Highway 22, in what I believe is the most beautiful part of Alberta.”
