Today, experimental pop band Braids announces their new album Euphoric Recall. Set for release on April 28th through Secret City Records. A freer and wholly anew effort, their fifth studio album finds the trio abandoning strategy, burning it down, and realizing their love record. Love, all of it; the unbound bliss, the budding impulses, and the messy imperfections, a supernova swirled up in a suite of bold, melodic, symphonic pop songs surrendered to the present. Braids also releases their new single “Evolution,” a clear eyed and calm banger that gives the record a grounded notion amidst the sprawling pace.

Of the new song, singer/guitarist Raphaelle Standell-Preston stated, “Evolution in and of itself is a patient act. Our pursuit of the individual self, which comprises all realms of human emotion, is sweetened with the intention and act of patience from ourselves, from those that we love and those who love us.” Last year, Braids teased the forthcoming album with “Retriever”, a luscious and meandering 9-minute journey that they called “simple in its sentiment of love and friendship, yet complex in its lush arrangement and textural experimentation.” It was picked up by Brooklyn Vegan, Under The Radar, and Stereogum who said it “builds and glides over an expansive runtime.”

The complexity of love and healing is not a new subject for Braids, but the vantage from which they see and sense it here is. “How you cultivate your heart space is extremely important to the outcome of what you are pursuing,” says Standell-Preston. “I think that when we are operating from a place of safety and feeling loved and have intentions of loving, we can access really interesting places.” As a lyricist, she draws generously from this heart space, often writing on the spot, in just a few takes. Lines are vivid, exhilarating, and evocative, a directness indicative of fully knowing oneself and engaging the moment. As songs emerged, the rhythms and textures became brighter and looser, brimming with life.

Written, recorded, self-produced, and mixed at Studio Toute Garnie, their Montréal studio, the music of Euphoric Recall is both unrushed and urgent, lush yet captured with in-the-room clarity. Elements weave in and out, shading a rich universe without crowding it. Austin Tufts brought a sharpened ear to sessions after producing records for Devon Welsh, Tess Roby, and others, sensing what songs needed from his drums, be it subtle balance or cathartic, jazz-inflected fills. Taylor Smith arrived from the depths of solo experiments and studio work, an ever-thorough multi-instrumentalist and sound designer with a renewed feel for fun and a move-forward mindset. Along with the album’s thematic sensuality, Standell-Preston carried the pulse of her club-minded project, Blue Hawaii, adding to their shared desire for new material to groove more viscerally.

Early into it, the group knew they wanted a guiding presence, manifested as string accompaniment. Together they arranged strings, with contributions and notations from Edwin De Goeij (who also plays the piano on several tracks), bringing the scores to an ensemble on cello, viola, and violins. The classically-trained players lit up with the freedom of the avant-garde structures; their resulting flourishes thread the album “like a protective blanket or little hands holding the songs,” says Standell-Preston.

Braids have regenerated their creative selves with every record. The Montréal trio moves intuitively, harnessing an emotional honesty and meticulous craft rooted in a willingness to let go and trust in one another; they immerse fully into the space of a full-length album. This devotion to exploring their art, together, has made for one of the more daring and fluid catalogs in contemporary experimental pop over the past decade. They see their story as a series of actions and reactions, a collective expression that swings like a pendulum between open-hearted freeness and process-driven precision.

MORE ABOUT SÉRÉNADES
Featuring intimate and atmospheric solo piano versions of key tracks from the album, “amour” and ”ouessant”, as well as three new compositions, sérénades is the nocturnal, stripped-back counterpart to the orchestral brightness of aubades. The EP has a powerful connection to the world of sleep and dreams, as Blais describes in his signature dry humour:

“This EP is the length of the recommended nap: 25 to 30 minutes. To be honest, I've never been able to listen to this EP without drifting into sleep. I normally try and make my music play with your attention by constantly introducing new elements. But with this EP I was thinking about music of the night. It’s not meant to distract you and keep you alert. Please fall asleep to it.”

One of these new tracks, ‘la chute’ (‘The Fall’), continues a rich tradition of composers writing music specifically for the left hand, including works by composers such as Scriabin, Ravel, Bach and Chopin. ‘la chute’ was composed after Blais injured his right arm in a fall, leading him to channel his frustration into the piece.

“There was a moment there where I thought it was just finished for me as a pianist. It was quite a dark place which is why the song is not that happy. In the emergency room, they gave me morphine and ketamine, putting me in a state where I was completely disconnected from reality. My boyfriend had this denim coat with a woollen collar, and for some reason, I started dreaming about sheep in the alps, a shepherd, and the sheep's wool becoming clouds as I drifted into the sky. And suddenly there was Maurice Ravel who suddenly appeared on his own little cloud.

“When I came back to reality, the dream reminded me of this piece that Ravel wrote for his friend who lost his right arm in the First World War. So then, for fun, I just started playing with what remained (my left hand) and I composed ‘la chute’.”

Today, Congolese-born, Montreal-based musician, songwriter, and DJ, and Polaris Music Prize winner Pierre Kwenders (he/him) releases the No No No - Remixes EP – a three-track collection featuring renditions of the José Louis and the Paradox of Love album highlight “No No No” by a range of international remixers and vocalists. The original electro-R&B cut from the 2022 Polaris Music Prize winning album, which was produced by Haitian artist Michael Brun, is Kwenders at his most unguarded, revelling in personal discovery and a celebration of the Congolese women and artists who impressed upon his upbringing. With new input from Portuguese-Angolan producer Vanyfox, and fellow Congolese artists Spilulu, and Majoos, who layers verse in Lingala, Swahili, and French over the song’s alluring dancefloor rhythm, the No No No remixes delve into the borderless flavours and propulsive beats that courses through Kwenders’s music.

Of the remix collection and its contributors, Kwenders had this to say: “‘No No No’ remains one of my favourite songs off of the album. It's a true declaration of love where everything and anything is possible, and there are no boundaries. Vanyfox is the future of the Batida sound and has no limits to what he can do. Having him on the remix EP is both an honour and a privilege. We’re spreading the love. Spilulu is a pioneer of electronic music in DRC. True veteran of nightlife culture. His rendition of ‘No No No’ is pure dancefloor love anthem! With his smooth and sensual vocals Majoos represents for the new generation of Congolese music. I couldn't be prouder to have them all on this EP.”

Motivated by the intricacies of love, the songs of José Louis And The Paradox Of Love weave together narratives from memories of the past, sketches of Kwenders’ hometown, and reflections on the future. A storyteller at his core, Kwenders has dedicated the heart of his creation to the life-giving force of motherhood, and his journey to discover his own identity: “This is for all the kids from the diaspora,” he said in his Polaris acceptance speech. “This is my story. This is my African story, my Congolese story, my Canadian story. This is your story if you want to take it as yours.” With José Louis and the Paradox of Love, Kwenders arrives at a new juncture – a moment of resonance, carefully wrapped in freewheeling tapestry, hinged in reverence to its diverse heritage, yet reveling in the inventive combination of its elements.

Seamlessly working across Congolese rumba, contemporary electronic music, pop-R&B, and jazz-infused progressions with a range of global collaborators including Tendai Maraire (Shabazz Palaces), Branko (M.I.A., Buraka som Sistema), Michael Brun (J Balvin), and Uproot Andy (Bomba Estereo), José Louis and the Paradox of Love is both an embrace of African musical tradition and an evolution of it. Singing and rapping in Lingala, French, English, Tshiluba, and Kikongo, Kwenders similarly weaves his stories across the boundaries of language and geography.

Born in Kinshasa, capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Kwenders borrows his stage name from his late grandfather, a widely respected businessman and community figure. Following his mother’s footsteps, in 2001 Kwenders immigrated from Congo to Montreal. While his music-filled childhood quickly earned him a reputation as the most energetic dancer at family gatherings, it was when he joined a youth choir in 2008 that Kwenders would have his first formative musical experience. Collecting taxes by day and singing in church by night, this spiritually fitting experience brought a young Kwenders clarity on the role that music would come to play in his life. Inspired by “sagacité,” a way of life coined by Ivorian singer Douk Saga, which means to work hard in order to play hard, a decade later he’s established himself as an architect of modern African music, creating a unique blend of Afro-inflected electronic sounds inspired by Congolese rumba, propagated by the Moonshine collective, a post-border multidisciplinary artist collective celebrating diversity in dance culture since Kwenders co-founded it in 2014.

José Louis and the Paradox of Love is a culmination of personal growth and the musical dexterity he has honed over the years, converging his strong songwriting capabilities with the bravado he possesses as a DJ. The album explores an ongoing search to grasp the universal complexities of romance, sometimes through the lens of Kwenders’ own intimate experiences. The songs were written and recorded over the span of four years, and the album is symbolically titled after his birth name, José Louis Modabi. Through different moments of tension and release, romantic narratives of beauty and disaster are packed into powerful poetic musical vignettes.

José Louis and The Paradox of Love transcends genres including electronic, pop, and rumba and includes instruments such as the guitar, saxophone, cello, trumpet, violin, and the Mbira, a plucked idiophone from Zimbabwe. Just as Kwenders writes from a multilingual perspective, so too does he draw on his musical influences, searching for the precise nuances offered by each one to best emotionally resonate. Dipping into a wide range of cultures, the album was written and recorded over four years in a handful of cities across borders including Montreal, Lisbon, Seattle, New York City, Philadelphia, and New Orleans.
