This Friday Polaris Music Prize nominated group, Super Duty Tough Work will unleash their new album, Paradigm Shift. A mission statement of sorts, Paradigm Shift is a marker in time, a testament to Super Duty Tough Work’s constantly evolving worldview and assertion of commitment to their art and the traditions from which they’re born.

Alongside the album release tomorrow, Super Duty Tough Work are sharing the new album single “Dirty Hands”. Taking its name from the infamous Parisian underground graffiti video series of the late 90s and early 2000s, “Dirty Hands” is crash course in rhyming as the track sees Brendan Grey doing what he does best: getting loose, talking his shit and subtly paying homage to the artists, writers, creatives and thinkers that paved the way for him to be where he is.

In addition to being an encyclopaedic reflection on Grey’s influences, “Dirty Hands” also speaks to those who abuse the culture for social capital and personal gain, while throwing shade at Grey for his ideas, only to still listen to Super Duty Tough Work upon release: ‘Most of these fucks just chasing fame with no respect for tradition / talking that shit about B, like ‘He thinks he’s all wisdom’ / But when my shit drops, you know they look for us like missing children’.”

Referencing everyone from the Black Panthers, to New York born, Paris based graffiti artist turned fine art painter, JonOne (Jon Porello), to far-left British journalist Ash Sarkar, and (Nigerian) painter Kehinde Wiley, amongst others, this track is a mix of Grey saluting his heroes, while positioning himself amongst them as a relevant contributor or torch carrier in the same canons. And just in case it wasn’t clear, Grey still ‘Doesn’t sweat these little Mileys tryna vibe me’.

MORE ABOUT PARADIGM SHIFT
Despite being only ten tracks, this record can be boiled down to having two distinct sides: party and revolution. On one hand, Paradigm Shift has a heavy dose of the usual witty, provocative, carefree lyricism we’ve come to expect from frontman Brendan Grey, mixed with some catchy hooks and melodic choruses sure to become ear-worms. On the other hand, the underlying themes of anti-imperialism, anti-capitalism, celebrity/idol worship and climate catastrophe can only be made to be so fun, making for an interesting dichotomy as the listener is pushed and pulled in a few very different directions throughout. The content can get pretty heavy, but in the same breath, it’s composed and presented in such a stylish and effortless manner, proving that a spoonful of honey (and a couple zoots) really does help the medicine go down. Cloaked at times in the dusty sample sound of golden era hip hop (p.s., it’s all live), while in other places utilizing a more contemporary approach such as trap hi-hats, House synths and 808 bass pads, this record clearly exemplifies the group’s growth, as we see them cover new ground both thematically and sonically. The heavy content and ear-pleasing soundscapes are so well put together that you don’t always realize that you’re listening to songs often exploring the symptoms and results of what can only be described as settler-colonialism and predatory/late stage capitalism/neoliberal economics, while also calling for the hanging of Elon Musk and redistribution of all stolen wealth hoarded by the billionaire class.

“I mean, it’s hard to summarize what this album is about, because it touches on so many different things,” says Grey. “Thematically, you could pick any one to explore, depending on what speaks to you. On one track I’m talking about how I’m the best rapper (typical), while in the next I’m calling for a complete systems overhaul. Then we’re talking about navigating depression, then Marisolle is talking about stepping in the party, looking fresh and ready to get busy. Then it’s back to straight rapping. It’s all related. I’d say though, generally, it all falls in line with our themes of ‘resistance-based debauchery’ and internationalism. Opposing the homicidal ruling class the planet is forced to endure, while at the same time having fun, celebrating the wins and each other, and indulging in joy when possible. This record really is meant to be a comfort measure for all victims of capitalism. Which is everyone (laughs).”

MORE ABOUT SUPER DUTY TOUGH WORK
Inspired by the dirty jazz loop sound of 90s east coast hip hop, Super Duty Tough Work are the live incarnation of hip hop culture's quintessential era, appearing as a band (we know, stay with us) but manifesting a sound that’s more akin to something straight out of an MPC or SP-404 sampler. Revered for their methodically curated sets, SDTW mixes laidback rap action and razor-sharp delivery with effortless loops sewn together with surprising transitions, keeping audiences on their feet and salivating in anticipation as to what’s coming next. Simply put: internationalism is the theme, liberation through hedonism is the dream, and satisfaction is guaranteed from the team whose specialty is taking audiences on a journey through a culture where loops are slayed and jewels are the tools of the trade.

After being a live show only act for years, the group released their debut EP Studies in Grey, in September 2019, followed by a cross country tour. Eight months later Studies in Grey received a Polaris Prize nod in the form of a Long List nomination, followed shortly thereafter with a nomination for a Western Canadian Music Award in the category of Best Rap & Hip Hop Artist. The Polaris nod makes SDTW the first Manitoba based hip hop act to be nominated for the prize.

OMBIIGIZI, the collaboration of Zoon (Daniel Monkman) and Status/Non-Status (Adam Sturgeon), is back with another new track since the release of their JUNO Award nominated and Polaris Music Prize shortlisted album Sewn Back Together. Today, they are sharing their version of Buffy Sainte Marie’s “Eagle Man / Changing Woman,” a guttural ode to the original, with swirling guitars and brooding ambience.

“OMBIIGIZI started as a desire to create a stronger cultural connection that Daniel and myself had felt was missing from our lives as indie rock kids prior to forming,” says Sturgeon. “In many ways we both felt isolated from our communities and were using music as a part of our guide forward. Now, our time together as a band to this point has been a whole new experience of ourselves as Anishinaabe people and truly powerful and uplifting to share as collaborators. So, when it comes to the legacy of indigenous art, we could not think of any other artist to cover than Buffy. Her song ‘Eagle Man / Changing Woman’ is a curiosity to us and a place of origins to the individual growth we have both come to as artists, as sober beings and as collaborators. We seek to consistently evaluate and make positive change in our relationships; with our identities, with our people and connections, and especially those closest to us. Buffy has been part of that guidance to us and oh so many others. We just heard she is retiring from live performance and wish her well and share this in honour of her positive influence and legacy.”

OMBIIGIZI’s cover is out today as a digital single, and a limited edition cassette with b-sides “Back At Me” ft. Peter Dreimanis, “Birch Bark Paper Trail (Demo), and “Cherry Coke” (Remix).

Putting aside the tonal nuances of their previous work as Zoon and Status/Non-Status (formerly known as WHOOP-Szo), OMBIIGIZI strips back the waves of distortion to reveal themselves, their voices, writing and improvising for the sake of the song. The family on Sewn Back Together includes the production duo of Kevin Drew of Broken Social Scene and Nyles Spencer of The Bathouse Studio. Recorded there in fast and intentional sessions during the summer of 2021, Drew and Spencer – along with musicians Eric Lourenço and Drew McLeod from Status/Non-Status and Zoon, respectively – helped steer this collision of divergent artists into some glorious sonic territory steeped in shoegaze, dream pop, anthemic rock, Chicago post-rock, and 2nd wave emo. While not always getting to play and perform alongside other members of their community, OMBIIGIZI is a coming together – with Sewn Back Together, a resounding statement shaped by healing and the guidance of culture.

Recently, Russell Louder announced their upcoming sophomore album, Fair-weather. Today, they’re sharing the new video for “Need” from director Bobby Leon. "When I was writing this song, I was really exploring the ‘love is the drug’ theme of songwriting,” explains Louder. “This led me to reflect on my own addictive or self-soothing tendencies, and how historically I’ve allowed the idea of love to consume me in a really intoxicating way – I say ‘the idea’ because I don’t think true, secure love is intoxicating. I also integrated mechanisms of disco to create a build of tension and ecstasy in the production of this song.”

On the video, Leon says the inspiration for the music video was “rooted in creating tension moments between Russell and their cast-mate Frederique Rodier. Through flashes of what could be opportunities of tension between two people, as well as tension through movement, push and pull, leaving trails behind, we get carried away in the feelings of desire and needing someone to need us. We never get the satisfaction anticipated, not even at the end of the video.”

MORE ABOUT FAIR-WEATHER
How do you navigate the aftermath of being cracked open? On their new album, Fair-weather, Montreal-based songwriter, producer, and multidisciplinary artist Russell Louder deploys a newfound vulnerability to scrutinize the structural integrity of devotion.

Due out September 29, 2023, the LP finds Louder exploring the many conditions that comprise patience, support, and compassion when circumstances take a downturn, looking inward to examine the universal and all-too-familiar realization of desiring what’s deserved but that isn’t offered, and surrendering in order to rebuild.

The result is a record that charts a gleaming evolution: interspersing their signature unyielding vocals over luminescent, asymmetrical 80s synth-pop, and the throb of “desert noir”-tinged folk rock. At times, utilizing pulsating disco as an alarm to call attention to the imperfect emotions we’d rather look away from; or, confronting the skin-crawl of jealousy through icy techno; and inviting minimal ascending strings to simulate the wobbly courage of grieving love while remaining open to it.

A masterclass in the potency of a collage-like approach that utilizes essential tools to maximum effect, Fair-weather was primarily crafted in their bedroom, with found percussion, Ableton Live, and their father’s classical acoustic guitar from the 1950s.

Reminiscent of Canadian’s renowned legacy of arresting and sparse vocal-centered electronica, yet taking cues from artists as varied as Sisters of Mercy and Bauhaus, to Laurie Anderson and Peter Gabriel, Fair-weather weaves together an amorphous blend of genres. That savant mélange truly is the mark of an artist with limitless ambition — and the skill to prioritize cohesion and clarity.

MORE ABOUT RUSSELL LOUDER
Born in rural Prince Edward Island and raised in a family of musicians, visual artists, and poets, Louder learned early how art could communicate a rich emotional lexicon. As a teenager, they traveled across Canada and the United States as a performance artist and received dispatches from Montreal’s early 2000s techno scene from their brother through mailed mixtapes.

Developing the foundations of the project from an attic room in Iceland eight years ago, they’ve since seen their debut album longlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and performed at numerous festivals : Sled Island, Flourish Festival, Pop Montreal, Liverpool Sound City, M for Montreal, and Future Forest, and a range of Pride festivals around the East Coast.

Russell Louder will celebrate the release of Fair-weather with a performance at Pop Montreal on September 29
