Abigail Lapell’s Lullabies is a haunting collection of traditional songs from around the world, arranged and performed on classical guitar and vocals. Recorded by Michael Timmins at his Toronto studio, the project includes songs in English, French, Hebrew, Spanish, Yiddish, German, Japanese, and Welsh and features original guitar and vocal arrangements and, in some cases, new English lyrical adaptations. Lullabies also includes one original song in English, based on a fragment of a half-remembered bedtime song from her mother.

Today, the celebrated songwriter is sharing “Isabeau” which brings sparse plucked strings and haunting layers of vocal harmonies to the beloved traditional French lullaby. “Isabeau s'y promène” (“Isabeau Goes Walking”) tells the story of a young girl who goes walking in her garden by the water’s edge, where she meets 30 sailors aboard a boat. The youngest of them starts singing a beautiful song, which she wants to learn. With its mediaeval feel and repetitive structure, the song casts an enchanting, otherworldly spell.

MORE ABOUT LULLABIES
Lapell’s first entirely solo recording, the project was inspired in part by a bout of insomnia during COVID-19 lockdowns, and fueled by the exigencies of isolation throughout 2021-2022. With repertoire drawn from her experience as an early childhood music educator, the album also coincided with the arrival of several new babies in Lapell’s extended family, and with her and her partner’s own journey trying to conceive.

Alternately sweet and foreboding, this body of work illuminates some of the darker themes lurking beneath the surface of so many beloved folk tunes. Like fairy tales and traditional ballads of all kinds, these story-songs often touch upon deeper cultural memories, spiritual lessons or cautionary tales. At the same time, their familiar and comforting imagery – the moon and stars in orbit; an intimate fireside tableau; landscapes shrouded in darkness – ultimately hold the promise of safe passage between waking and dreams, through the liminal space at the border between earthly and numinous realms. Above all, these lullabies are dedicated to dreamers of all ages, and to the eternal human quest for a good night’s sleep.

Abigail Lapell is an indie-folk songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto. Her three albums have won three Canadian Folk Music Awards (English Songwriter of the Year in 2020 and 2023, and Contemporary Album of the Year in 2017) and garnered over 30 million Spotify streams. Lapell tours widely across Canada and the U.S., performing on vocals, harmonica, piano and finger-style guitar.

RADAR PEAK - PUP’S NESTOR CHUMAK AND ZACK MYKULA TOGETHER WITH MATT ALDRED OF MODERN SUPERSTITIONS, MICHAEL RAULT, + NYSSA - DEBUT SELF-TITLED LP, OUT OCTOBER 20

Today, Radar Peak, comprised of Nestor Chumak and Zack Mykula (PUP) and Matt Aldred (Modern Superstitions), are sharing another three and a half minute meditation on the themes of physical and emotional dislocation from their upcoming, debut, self-titled album, due out October 20, 2023. Framed by alternately chugging and jangly guitars, a melodic bass line, snappy drums and some homegrown production flourishes, “Butane Glow” starts off sparsely enough but by the end just about every hook imaginable is clamouring for attention. You might get a tooth ache if you listen to this one twice in a row.

MORE ABOUT RADAR PEAK
Radar Peak is the ‘not-so-new’ project from Chumak and Mykula, who spend most of their time on the road with the JUNO Award winning and Polaris Music Prize nominated outfit PUP, and Aldred, the much sought after musician and collaborator know for his work with Modern Superstitions, Michael Rault, and Nyssa. While they may be announcing their debut record today, the band itself sees its roots formed almost 20 years ago. “The three of us have been entertaining each other’s musical curiosity, in one way or another, for twenty years,” says Mykula. “From highschool - a time when bands made their homes in garages - through to all of life’s intentions.” Though their ‘garage’ band broke up in 2006, through a miracle in scheduling, when all three musicians were both not on tour somewhere and back home in Toronto in 2016, the three re-ignited that curiosity and found themselves together again, and back in a garage.

It’s the early 2000s. That ‘garage’ band the three formed in high-school, the Vibrosonics, had been a space to pursue ambitious compositions, with each member pushing the others to become more technically proficient and to surprise the others with heterodox progressions and harmonies. They pushed each other to grow quickly as musicians, but they also grew apart as collaborators, and the Vibrosonics disbanded in 2006. Shortly after, Aldred formed the Toronto rock group Modern Superstitions (Last Gang) with NYSSA, collaborating with Brian Borcherdt (Holy Fuck), Ben Cook (Fucked Up), Patrick Pentland (Sloan) and John Critchley on the band’s production — he has since become a sought-after collaborator and session player. Chumak and Mykula pursued individual projects before reconvening in 2011 to form the band PUP who have released four records to widespread critical acclaim.

Fast forward a decade to the West End of Toronto. Aldred was home from a global tour in Michael Rault’s band, opening for Chicago’s Whitney and Australia’s King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard, while Chumak and Mykula were recovering from playing over 100 shows across North America, Europe and Australia with Modern Baseball, Jeff Rosenstock, Charly Bliss and others. Coming home after a party in their old neighbourhood, the three started talking - not about the new places they’d seen and exciting people they’d met, but about what they’d missed, including playing with each other.

“When we first started, we were just kids — green as can be,” Aldred reflects. “It wasn't until after we'd split up that we learned how to make the music we loved.” Mykula adds that “that spark of connectivity seemed always enough to lead us back together. Afterall, nurturing each other’s wherewithal has, to date, always provided.”

For the next four years, they sent each other ideas, giving themselves permission to explore and to develop the kinds of deep textures that their other commitments would never allow. “None of us had ever steadily built songs from the ground up, one by one, in order to create a whole, cohesive record,” Mykula says. “We were able to discover new directions, but were sometimes paralyzed by options and potential. Thankfully, we were able to rely on Marcel Ramagnano to ‘edit’ the madness into something palatable.”

That madness that accompanies touring, separation, and exploration became a kind of power pop that reflects both the yearning and the self-deprecation of a self-aware person living a modern, dislocated life. And in those deeper, darker boxes in the garage were the kinds of stories that this madness deserved: of a late-night Kafka dependent on free WiFi and Farfisa to feel whole, of a sniper’s target who realizes that that deadly attention is a form of love, of living a life so cautious and sensible the world passes you by entirely, of a musician who has been on tour so long that his body has lost its sense of home and his soul has become restless for a trial separation. Each song feels exuberant yet meticulously written, simultaneously fresh and remembered. When it came time to name the project, they were drawn to the grieving physicist in Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem, who sends the message that seals humanity’s fate from her lab atop the Radar Peak to which she has been banished.

The result is their self-titled debut record - songs built through trust and curiosity. A dense thrum of guitars and drums. A lush and noisy record about the isolation of modern connectivity. But also, it’s rock and roll.

Tomorrow is a big day for Dan Mangan. His most recent album, Being Somewhere, has the honour of being shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize and will be performing at the gala September 19 at Toronto’s Massey Hall. Today, as he prepares to hit the road again for a run of tour dates this fall, the celebrated songwriter is sharing a reimagining of his lush, driven track “Just Know It (Elsewhere Version)” from Being Somewhere.

Dan's powerful words ‘Truth hurts and it always shows up dead last when the party's over / Wouldn’t you just know it?’ are given new life as the minimalist piano track from the album have been laden with guitar and polyrhythms. Speaking of the track, Dan reflects, "When we reflect on the historical atrocities humans have thrust upon each other, we always ponder, ‘why didn’t anybody stop this before it got so bad?’. Then we apply the only logical conclusion we can muster - that with all this hindsight, we surely must know better now. But, of course, we do not know better now. Every time the dust settles, I want it to be crystal clear where I’ve stood."

MORE ABOUT BEING SOMEWHERE
Being Somewhere, Mangan’s sixth studio album, cuts incisively but never forgets its underlying thesis: It’s cool to care. Mangan arms the rebels in the crusade for tenderness. The album is a combative plea for mercy from a manic world and its effects on the psyche. Whittling his sharpest pen to date, Being Somewhere is marked by Mangan’s singular wit and a respectful deference to the quagmire of existence.

“I wanted this album to feel like the inside crook of a familiar elbow on the nape of your neck, a comforting embrace” says Mangan, “These songs are tenderhearted and unfurl like an overdue conversation with a dear friend. They essentially lay out where we’re at, how I’m doing, and how I think I can help."

571 emails. 100+ hours on the phone and thousands of text messages. A mere 3 days spent in-person together over two and a half years of long-distance work. Such a displaced recording process might make anyone question the concept of being anywhere at all, let alone being somewhere else.

This is how Dan Mangan and collaborator/producer Drew Brown (Radiohead, Beck) manifested Being Somewhere. All components were recorded in isolation and beamed up to the mothership. No piece of the puzzle ended up as expected, and each moment is the fruition of separate, yet conjoined, rabbit holes.

“The hard part was waiting,” Mangan says of the long-distance process, “sometimes it took six weeks to resolve an issue that could have taken twenty minutes had we been together in a room. But Drew’s dedication and talent cannot be understated, and this music doesn’t sound like anything else I’m hearing these days."

Under the care of Drew Brown’s distinct touch, Being Somewhere forges sonics well beyond the tropes of modern folk music. Helming the project from Chicago, Brown sourced musical contributions from all over North America, the UK and Japan, including work from Joey Waronker (Beck, Atoms for Peace), Jason Falkner (Beck, St. Vincent), Thomas Bartlett (The National, Taylor Swift), Dave Okumu (Arlo Parks, Adele), Mary Lattimore (Kurt Vile, Sharon Van Etten), and Broken Social Scene frontman Kevin Drew.
