WINTER TOUR ANNOUNCED, DATES WITH COLD WAR KIDS

Today, Hovvdy shares “Jean”, a jaunty new single from the beloved Texas duo comprised of Charlie Martin and Will Taylor. “‘Jean’ is a song about doing well for those you love," explains Taylor. "It's tangled in self doubt and uncertainty; yet meant to  embrace both the joy and the complications of life.”

The track, which received its world premiere on SiriusXMU, was produced by the band with Andrew Sarlo (Big Thief, Bon Iver, Dijon) and Ben Littlejohn. It’s the first taste of new music since their maximalist 2022 EP billboard for my feelings, which Pitchfork said “adds new wrinkles to their work, building upon the template of True Love and homing in on their deceptively sophisticated sound,” adding that they “refined their approach by leaning into their most playful inclinations, prioritizing texture and melody over narrative stability, broadening their simple yet spacious arrangements with small, striking details.”

PRAISE FOR 2021’S TRUE LOVE

"The candid reflexivity in Hovvdy’s songwriting and instrumentation guards against oversentimentality. They’re not stuck in the past; they’re moving forward, craning their necks back to see what’s been left behind." -Pitchfork

"A fantastic soundtrack to taking in the first October weekend of the year, posted up in the backyard with a six-pack of Shiner and a couple of pals or reminiscing on the last time you did those sort of things on a weekday." -SPIN

"With each Hovvdy release, Charlie Martin and Will Taylor inch a little closer to the sunshine. On 'True Love,' the first single off their new album of the same name, they’re fully there, all aglow and with open arms." -The FADER

"Erupts with unshakeable charisma... The Texas duo's fourth album is driven by sharp lyricism, in search of joy and closure." -Paste

"Feels like a warm hug... With their fourth studio album, Austin pop duo Hovvdy presents its most mature and grounded sounds yet." -The AV Club

"True Love feels warm and approachable, like a close friend finally pulling you out of that persistent rut." -Consequence of Sound

"Hovvdy’s triumphant, enveloping True Love couldn’t have arrived at a better time." -UPROXX

"True Love is the most realized version of Hovvdy yet, a record that finds the duo peeling back the layers of their previous work until they arrive at the essential center." -FLOOD

"Their most authentic record to date" -American Songwriter

"Their fullest, catchiest release yet... Even in heartbreak, True Love's velvet soundscapes offer welcome comfort." -Austin Chronicle

Multi-award-winning artist, Aluna today announces the launch of her record label, Noir Fever, in partnership with EMPIRE. The label will celebrate Black dance music, with a focus on Black women and LGBTQ+ artists.

The genesis of Noir Fever began following Aluna’s 2020-penned open letter to the dance music industry, rightfully making waves and headlines all over the world, calling out the lack of Black representation across the industry as a whole. Championing Black and queer voices both behind the scenes and on the stage, her latest album, MYCELiUM saw her collaborate with a cohort of collaborators and allies from around the world, including KOOLDRINK, Roofeeo, Pabllo Vittar, TSHA, Tchami, Kareen Lomax, MNEK and more. The critically acclaimed album saw Aluna notch her first Billboard No. 1 as a solo artist, with the song “Running Blind” (with Tchami and Kareen Lomax) landing the top spot on Billboard’s Dance/Mixshow Airplay Chart.

The first project signed to Noir Fever is Moonshine, a Montreal based collective made up of like-minded musicians, DJs, dancers, and visual artists. Their first single “Pain & Pleasure”, released today, features the JUNO Award-nominated, Somali-Canadian artist, Amaal Nuux alongside Portuguese-Angolese artist Vanyfox, and Aluna herself.

Speaking about the track, Moonshine explain, "Pain & Pleasure” is a collaborative track between Batida’s rising star, Vanyfox and the soulful vocals of dance and R&B artists Aluna and Amaal Nuux. Born and true to our global afro-diasporic influences and identity, a catalyst to the genre blending that you hear both at our events and on our albums, this song fuses a Batida groove with an R&B grace, representing a love and synergy that can only be found on the dance floor."

The track will be featured on Moonshine’s forthcoming mixtape, due out in early 2024.

Noir Fever has also appointed Adam Cooper as Creative Director. Adam Cooper (aka Foreigner) is an LA-based strategist, creative director and DJ born in Trinidad & Tobago and raised in Caracas/Venezuela & Brooklyn/NYC. His commitment to Pan African philosophy has established Foreigner as the creator and resident DJ behind some of the wildest, most nuanced Afro Diasporic parties in Los Angeles.

Speaking about her label, Aluna reveals, "I started Noir Fever records as a key component to my 360• strategy of making sustainable and effective change to the future of Black dance music, an idea which was birthed as a response to my own letter to the Dance music industry in 2020. Investment in the recording side is essential to fostering emerging talent and by focusing on Black women and the queer community I can ensure that everyone is being uplifted. This label will work in tandem with my events company so that those who I am opening doors for are not simply walking into another closed door, I’m trying to create a path not an opportunity to slip through a crack."

Deron Delgado, Director of Operations and A&R at EMPIRE Dance adds, "We are delighted to announce our partnership with Aluna and her Noir Fever brand. Beyond her extraordinary achievements and remarkable talent, Aluna has consistently championed diversity and inclusion in the music industry, principles that have been ingrained in the very fabric of EMPIRE since our inception over a decade ago. Our shared values and objectives align seamlessly, making this collaboration a natural synergy that promises to elevate music, events, and art to a broader global audience. We are truly excited to be part of showcasing the exceptional talent that Noir Fever is bringing to the masses."

MORE ABOUT MOONSHINE
Since its founding in 2014, Moonshine has carved out an enviable niche in Montreal’s nightlife milieu by celebrating a wide range of fledgling local talents, championing Afro-futuristic, bass-heavy, electro-funk sounds, and bringing together communities that wouldn’t necessarily cross paths otherwise. As the name indicates, the lunar-based Moonshine recipe has the collective throw an all-night, sensory-soaked party on the Saturday after every full moon in ever-shifting, unpredictable locations across the city, always strictly disclosed via text messages. With fresh cuts supplied by resident DJs Pierre Kwenders, Vanyfox, San Farafina, and AKantu, visual installations and a slew of live musicians and performers that have included Kaytranada, Dâm-Funk, Le1f, Venus X, Uproot Andy, Bambii and Branko, the parties have become a staple of the after-hours scene, in Canada and abroad, with appearances in NYC, LA, Paris, Brussels, Milan, Lisbon, London, Barcelona and Santiago just to name a few.

“The essence of Moonshine came out of parties we used to throw in our kitchens,” recalls Kwenders. “We felt like we couldn’t go out and find what we had cooked up in that kitchen. It’s one of the reasons we started Moonshine: to share that with more people who felt just like us, and who didn’t have access to such sounds or vibes.” Still going strong nine years on, Moonshine has also begun making use of the aesthetic, network, and structure it established with the parties to promote affiliated artists, expanding its vision from ephemeral moonlit soirées to an expanding catalog of genre-busting music, art, and apparel.

MORE ABOUT ALUNA
Aluna originally got her start as one half of the beloved duo AlunaGeorge, achieving international renown with widespread acclaim, award nominations, major collaborations, and massive tours, but it wasn’t until later that she stepped truly into her power with her debut album Renaissance in 2020 (LISTEN) via Mad Decent. Co-produced by Aluna alongside executive producer Lido, and featuring contributions from Princess Nokia, Jada Kingdom, SG Lewis, KAYTRANADA, Scott Storch, GRADES, Mr. Carmack and Rema, Renaissance represented the culmination of her journey of “a Black girl in an all-white British suburb back in the day” to launching a rule-breaking revolution where rigid boundaries dissolve between culture, race, gender, and genre. Beyond generating over 100 million streams, it garnered widespread tastemaker acclaim. Pitchfork noted, “The album showcases her curatorial skills—honed from years of DJ sets, streaming playlists, and recently virtual shows as Aluna’s Room—and her range,” while Clash raved, “Renaissance sees Aluna cementing herself as one of the most exciting artists around with this iconic offering that will inspire dance records for years to come.” Now, Aluna gears up to further cement herself as one of the most important curators and voices in dance music with her second full-length solo offering, MYCELiUM.

DEBUT LP, VOL. 1, OUT TODAY VIA VICTORY POOL RECORDS

BUY / STREAM VOL. 1 HERE

MOONRIIVR IS THE NEW PROJECT FROM GAVIN GARDINER (THE WOODEN SKY) AND CHAMPAGNE JAMES ROBERTSON (LINDI ORTEGA), FEATURING BEN WHITELEY (THE WEATHER STATION), AND LYLE MOLZAN (KATHLEEN EDWARDS)

TOUR DATES BEGIN NOVEMBER 17 // TICKETS HERE

“Sounds as if Buddy Holly and Chris Isaak made a record with Damien Jurado. The slowmotion-surf on “10,000 suns” as well as the Folk-Blues “Run” with it’s sizzling analogue amps are outstanding.” - Rolling Stone (Germany)

Today, MOONRIIVR’s debut LP, Vol. 1, is available everywhere courtesy of Victory Pool Records. The band is also sharing the new video for album track “Flowers On The Fire Escape”, a song that “came at a time in my life when, whether I knew it or not, change was around the corner,” says songwriter Gavin Gardiner. “I felt that I was writing a clever song about climate change and social justice, but now I hear in it my longing for connection. The pain and struggle in the world at the time, as well as in my personal life. There were friendships lost, mistakes made, and the feeling of bracing myself for a new beginning. It’s a lot to pack into a four minute song built around an upright bass and the bongo’s but it’s all in there and it’s one of my favorites on the album.”

MORE ABOUT MOONRIIVR
The story of MOONRIIVR’s incarnation began in the spring of 2020, early days of the pandemic. Gavin Gardiner – best known as the front person for JUNO Award-nominated indie-folk mainstays The Wooden Sky, and as a producer and engineer at All Day Coconut studios for artists such as Fiver, Jason Collett, Leanne Betasamosake Simpson – visited his friend “Champagne” James Robertson at the Robertson family farm north of Toronto. After years touring as lead guitar with acts like Lindi Ortega and Dwayne Gretzky, Robertson was similarly adrift during those strange early pandemic days. The two had been circling around each other in the Toronto music scene when the chance to collaborate landed in front of them. Armed with a vintage Tascam 388 tape recorder, mellotron and a nylon string guitar the two got stuck in and quickly realized they had stumbled onto something special.

The songs on MOONRIIVR’s aptly titled debut, Vol. 1, came together on an old analogue tape machine, laced with sweetly reverberating slide guitars, wonky string synths, and nimble percussive environments. MOONRIIVR's knack for creating sonic worlds that are at once lightly trippy and wholly inviting means that, as much as Vol. 1 draws on inspirations from decades past, it maintains a pleasing, distinctly out-of-time feel. The band half-jokingly likened the album to ‘Buddy Holly meets Krautrock’, and strange as it sounds it's not far off the mark.

Thematically, the songs are wide ranging, providing a winning contrast to the laser focus of MOONRIIVR's sonic architecture. Running the gamut from personal reflections on finding pleasure in the minutiae of everyday life on “Blonde Hair Now” to meditations on some of the more disturbing and inescapable developments in world politics over the last few years (“Midnight at the Garden Hotel”, “Flowers on the Fire Escape”), Gardiner deftly addresses these seemingly disparate thought-poles with a balance of opacity and directness. While not beating the listener over the head, Gardiner doesn’t shy away from uncomfortable topics, be it climate change or navigating friendship schisms that developed around divergent pandemic politics. It's the kind of record that can thrum warmly in the background but also pays dividends for those listeners willing to dig a little deeper.

After this initial round of writing and recording sessions at the farm, the two decamped back to Toronto where they roped in first-call bassist Ben Whiteley (The Weather Station, Basia Bulat, Julia Jacklin) and percussionist extraordinaire Lyle Molzan (Kathleen Edwards, Corb Lund), and continued tweaking and refining their sound during weekly sessions at All Day Coconut. The two added a new layer of depth to the proceedings, with Whiteley's tasteful, earthy bass playing providing a warm anchor to the music, and Molzan largely eschewing a standard drumkit in favour of triangles, congas, and other sundry percussive items.

Finally, MOONRIIVR returned to the farm to pull the whole thing together. They set up shop in the garage, placing guitar amplifiers in cars and opening and closing the car doors to adjust sound leakage during recording. The 30 degree July heat made it necessary to keep the garage doors open, letting the natural ambient sounds of their rural environs seep into the background of the songs. Gardiner in particular delighted in this refreshing change from the status quo, re-setting himself with this open-ended, at times magical creative process, which he says “really opened up a whole new musical world to me that I had heard in the music I loved.”
