Today, Ghostly Kisses (Margaux Sauvé), is sharing the new music video for recent single, “Golden Eyes”. Blending spirited melodies with a touch of wistful nostalgia, and weaving in the rhythmic tapestry of UK Garage drum beats, provided by George Fitzgerald and Louis-Étienne Santais who offered production on the track, this fresh single unfurls a narrative of romantic awakening within the intricate dynamics of friendship. It's a track that stands tall, buoyed by Ghostly Kisses' self-awareness, her defining strength, and her songwriting prowess, which serves as her vessel for profound expression. With spellbinding vocals, coupled with ingenious wordplay, “Golden Eyes” boasts an infectious hook that lingers. It’s more than just a song; it’s a therapeutic experience you might not have realized were waiting to be explore.

The music video opens with Margaux addressing the camera with the words, ‘I've got something to tell you’, hinting at an impending revelation. The singer appears somewhat uneasy in front of the camera, and the scene transitions from a cold and sterile photoshoot to the countryside, ultimately culminating in a vivid red world—a subtle nod to Ghostly Kisses' upcoming second album, release date yet to be announced.

As Margaux traverses the countryside, meandering through fields and passing a mysterious house seemingly from another dimension or era, she continues to sing to the camera, ‘Golden eyes, I'll be with you, I shine for you’. The video, beautifully captured with a 16mm camera, showcases photography that mirrors the raw, radiant, and ethereal naturalism at the core of Ghostly Kisses' aesthetic and sound.

This visual journey serves as an invitation to a crimson-hued world, a forewarning of the artist's intention to unveil another dimension within the realm of Ghostly Kisses. Anticipation builds as viewers eagerly await the opportunity to delve deeper into this evolving artistic landscape.

MORE ABOUT GHOSTLY KISSES
The bonafide pop-star, born Margaux Sauvé, hails from a musical family in Quebec. Her musical journey commenced early on with her learning the violin. While she briefly attended the Conservatoire in Quebec, she soon found it lacking the element of fun and chose to chart her own musical path. Singing became a part of her repertoire later on, as she once believed that being a singer necessitated a powerful and booming voice, a stark contrast to her quiet and introspective nature. The pop music that surrounded her in Quebec during her formative years didn't quite resonate with her. However, the spark of creativity was ignited during her studies in psychology at university, compelling her to venture into songwriting.

Margaux began creating music at a time when she was trapped in a toxic relationship, struggling to comprehend the situation. This challenging period heavily influenced her early music, resulting in a blend of sorrowful and exploratory themes. Over time, she came to realize the depth of her instinctive songwriting and the emotions she was conveying in her songs.

Today, celebrated songwriter Abigail Lapell is releasing her new album of reimagined, traditional melodies, Lullabies. Recorded by Michael Timmins at his Toronto studio, the project includes songs in English, French, Hebrew, Spanish, Yiddish, German, Japanese, and Welsh and features original guitar and vocal arrangements and, in some cases, new English lyrical adaptations. Lullabies also includes one dreamy, original song in English, “Go To Sleep”, by Lapell which is based on a fragment of a half-remembered bedtime song from her mother.

With its simple, infectious melody and sparse guitar-and-vocals arrangement, the song uses iconic nighttime imagery – moon, stars, a gentle night breeze – to evoke the comfort and familiarity of a restful night’s sleep.

Lapell will be releasing videos for all of the album tracks from visual artist Tatiana Vaca. Each Friday, another video will be released. However, subscribers to Lapell’s mailing list will get early access to the videos on Tuesdays. Fans can sign up to the mailing list here

MORE ABOUT LULLABIES
Lapell’s first entirely solo recording, the project was inspired in part by a bout of insomnia during COVID-19 lockdowns, and fueled by the exigencies of isolation throughout 2021-2022. With repertoire drawn from her experience as an early childhood music educator, the album also coincided with the arrival of several new babies in Lapell’s extended family, and with her and her partner’s own journey trying to conceive.

Alternately sweet and foreboding, this body of work illuminates some of the darker themes lurking beneath the surface of so many beloved folk tunes. Like fairy tales and traditional ballads of all kinds, these story-songs often touch upon deeper cultural memories, spiritual lessons or cautionary tales. At the same time, their familiar and comforting imagery – the moon and stars in orbit; an intimate fireside tableau; landscapes shrouded in darkness – ultimately hold the promise of safe passage between waking and dreams, through the liminal space at the border between earthly and numinous realms. Above all, these lullabies are dedicated to dreamers of all ages, and to the eternal human quest for a good night’s sleep.

Abigail Lapell is an indie-folk songwriter and multi-instrumentalist from Toronto. Her three albums have won three Canadian Folk Music Awards (English Songwriter of the Year in 2020 and 2023, and Contemporary Album of the Year in 2017) and garnered over 30 million Spotify streams. Lapell tours widely across Canada and the U.S., performing on vocals, harmonica, piano and finger-style guitar.

Today, Busty And The Bass are releasing their new album, Forever Never Cares, a record which sounds, at once, of a bygone era and completely modern. The album finds the collective both broadening and distilling their influences of soul, funk, indie, and jazz, into a unified sound that is entirely their own. They’re also sharing the upbeat funk-pop single "Starstruck (ft. Jordan Brown)", which details the journey of straying from one’s innocence before finding your way back. Between Brown’s otherworldly falsetto and the heartfelt expressiveness of vocalist Alistair Blu, they too lure you in.

“It was initially somewhat literal when Jordan and I were writing the lyrics,” says Blu. “Though it quickly drifted into more broad themes of being drawn to flashiness and glamour. The halo represents someone’s purity before being led astray to corruption. The perspective is from that of the corrupter. By the end of the tune, the corruptor kind of realizes his/her faults and gives in, leading with the advice ‘find your way home’ etc.”

MORE ABOUT FOREVER NEVER CARES

Forever Never Cares features dynamic live performances, expansive arrangements, and a wide array of vocal approaches including the heartfelt expressiveness of Alistair Blu, the otherworldly falsetto of Jordan Brown, the soul of Katie Tupper, the power of Son Little, and the playfulness of Magi Merlin. The moment you think you know which direction the album is going, it takes another unexpected turn, but you are always delighted by the eventual destination.

“Forever Never Cares is a gentle reminder to let go of attachment,” explains vocalist Alistair Blu. “The album is about leaving behind the small things in life that we obsess over. It’s about embracing uncertainty.” And for a group of musicians entering a period of change, it’s a testament to their creative connection that they were able to produce their most cohesive and adventurous album to date.

“This album is the culmination of 10 years as a band,” says Christopher Vincent. “All the ups and downs, members coming and going. But it’s also a crystallization of what we’ve been trying to achieve for years.”

MORE ABOUT BUSTY AND THE BASS
For the Canadian-American soul-jazz collective Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their music. Formed at McGill University in Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. Yet, with a collaborative spirit at the heart of their third studio album, Forever Never Cares, the members have never been more connected.

Over the years, the group has collaborated with legendary artists George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders. Most recently, the group dropped a mini-album with Philadelphia poet and rapper STS. Despite such a strong history of partnerships, Forever Never Cares reshaped the band’s creative formula and redefined how they worked together a decade into their career.

After a founding member and primary songwriter left the band in 2022, the collective used the opportunity to re-approach their creative process for the first time in years. Songs would be brought to the group from individual members or smaller formations of two or three members writing together. Interestingly, more voices involved in the songwriting resulted in the group’s most refined output to date.

Two previous studio albums, Uncommon Good (2017) and Eddie (2020), saw the band experiment with genres effortlessly changing styles song to song, from soul to funk to pop.

Forever Never Cares finds the collective both broadening and distilling their influences into a unified sound that is entirely their own. This is due in large part to founding member Christopher Vincent who engineered and mixed the album. Vincent found a sonic language that would compliment all of the disparate genres being stacked atop one another.

With soul and R&B as the album’s cornerstone, the record is sprinkled with cross-genre explorations. From the indie rock-inflected uptempo singles “All The Things I Couldn’t Say To You” and “Wandering Lies,” to slow-burn ballads like “Give Me A Smile” and “Never Get Enough,” to the celebratory pop-funk of “Starstruck” and “No Angels,” a touch of 70s singer-songwriter on “Smoke and the Pine” and “Holiday Drive,” and the psychedelic jazz explorations of “Far From Here” and “No Self Control” featuring saxophonist Terrace Martin, a frequent collaborator of Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper.
