Today, LOONY is sharing the new single, “Counting Thunder”, possibly her most outright experimental track to date, also happens to be the most hard hitting. Written together with Grammy Award nominated collaborators Akeel Henry (Jasmine Sullivan, John Legend) and Adam Pondang, and Dan Farber, “‘Counting Thunder’ is waiting for the storm to hit,” says LOONY. “You feel it coming before you even see it, because you’re always expecting it, constantly trying to calculate its proximity to you. You’re trying to control it, get it over with, and prevent yourself from getting hurt.

“I have a lot of anxiety, especially in relationships, and I think especially once you go through trauma you’re just waiting for the next bad thing to happen. But that’s just in all of life, in general. Things are always happening, and we apply meaning to it - it’s all random chaos and we all try to act so big and tough but we’re literally all afraid, all the time, and working so hard to try to control things. And I don’t know, it’s kind of funny, and tragic, and at the time I was writing it, it felt like such a personal song but now I don’t think it is. I think it’s one of my favourites, though.”

LOONY has come a long way from skipping musical theatre classes in high school to make mixtapes in her basement: Working with Adam Pondang and Noah ‘40’ Shebib protege Akeel Henry (Ty Dolla $ign, Jeremih, Jazmine Sullivan) on soft thing, LOONY summons musical shades of gospel, jazz, hip hop, and R&B, as on “faceless” and “raw,” which recall early Erykah Badu, The Roots and peak-era D’Angelo in both their enigmatic funkiness and Huszar’s poignant mastery of vocal inflection. At its core, the quarantine-made EP was a diligent exploration of love in many forms, from the euphoric expectation of flirtation to the inextricable hope for a grandparent to stay safe in the midst of a global pandemic. With the release of "Old Friends" we enter into a new chapter of her inextinguishable spirit and verve for finding the beauty in being vulnerable. There's much more on the horizon for LOONY this year.

Today, Scarborough blue collared R&B / soul-singer LOONY, aka, Kira Huszar, shares her new single “A Good Night” which follows this year’s previous single, “Old Friends”, and is the second song in a surprising succession of new moments from LOONY, doubling down on the breaking of over a year of musical silence.

Working together with Grammy Award nominated collaborators Akeel Henry (Jasmine Sullivan, John Legend) and Adam Pondang, the song begins with a traditionally LOONY sounding harmony stack, ominous and haunting with a barely noticeable vocal sample quietly sitting in the background. After a quick 8 bars we shift into a slappy guitar based loop that excels within its restrain, the restrain being what truly allows LOONY’s heartfelt lyrics and supernatural vocal ability to shine.

Contextually, LOONY muses “I’ve definitely ruined what was supposed to be a good night before, because I wasn’t willing to let something go. I had questions that needed answering, or feelings I had to get off my chest. It’s not always worth it, you definitely end up being the villain. But I can’t really pretend like everything’s cool if it’s not.

“This song itself came together quickly - ‘Akeel, Adam and I were out at this little cottage in the middle of nowhere, in the middle of the night, scream-singing this song. We were kinda loopy and over-tired and we had so much fun just playing with a bunch of random objects to create different textures. We mic'd a leaf at one point. It somehow ended up staying in the song.”

Today, LOONY, aka Kira Huszar, returns with “Old Friends” the first single of 2023 from the Scarborough blue collared R&B / soul-singer. The offering sets a traditionally LOONY-esque, soulful backdrop for the summer and accurately encapsulates her timeless writing style and effortless vocals. The song as we hear it today took shape during a spontaneous and intimate jam session in Los Angeles, produced by great friends and Grammy Award nominated collaborators Akeel Henry (Jasmine Sullivan, John Legend), Dan Farber (Lizzo) and Aaron Paris (Kanye West, Drake). The mature but playful song reads like a one-sided conversation or voicemail message, leaning into a breezy, classic melody with epic Motown-like harmony stacks.

On the single, LOONY says, “Sometimes, when it’s all over, you never talk to that person again. Other times, time passes, and you find yourself absent-mindedly smiling thinking of them or even reaching out to see how life’s treating them. But it’s not like it was before - it’s platonic now. The intimacy from what was once romance remains, it just looks a little different. You’re able to just look at that person for who they are, for you know them quite well, and they know you. You roll your eyes at them just the same but all the hurt is gone. Or most of it, at least. There’s something really sweet and singular to me about those moments, about those relationships. When relationships can often go so ugly, it’s a privilege when it ends to gain an old friend.”
