SKINNY DYCK SHARES NEW SINGLE, “CAN’T CHANGE THE COLOUR OF YOUR EYES”

Resist the urge to laugh at Skinny Dyck - the playful performing artistic alias of Western Canadian artist Ryan Dyck (or don’t, that’s kind of the idea). If you do elect to chew down on the name, it’s likely that a familiar flavour profile comes about - which is to be expected given the traditional country associations. What began as a side project to his steel guitar focused pursuits emerged as a principal form of expression, beginning with 2020’s Get to Know Lonesome LP, followed by the Palace Waiting EP in 2022. But inherent in the songwriting and production choices has always been a thread of something different. A careless recording mistake left unedited, a flippant lyrical bluff, or a single mic on the drums instead of 10 - “It reeks of creativity and originality not found in average country songs” (Americana Highways) and serves to set Skinny apart from the crowd.

Today, Dyck is sharing the new single, “Can’t Change The Colour Of Your Eyes” via Victory Pool Records, a mid-tempo twang pulsator with muted shades of psychedelia. Mixed by Mark Nevers (Lambchop, Bonnie Prince Billy), it seems representative of a small retreat from country music - an extended stay at the outdated lake cabin that leaves you wondering if you ever want to come back home.

“I have this guitar that’s setup in D and I kept playing the hook line from the song on it,” Dyck says. “It sounds better lower - closer to the ground, harder to tip over. Lyrically it’s a look in the mirror, which for me at this time was a wet blanket of enlightenment reminding that there are things about yourself that you likely can’t change - natured and nurtured - like your eyes.”

MORE ABOUT SKINNY DYCK
Marinating in the success of his off-brand twang is a new batch of material that sees the celebrated songwriter stepping further away from a genre defined by its traditions. It’s a sound underwritten by the richness of time that’s been unmoored by the wandering eye of creative expression. A sort of Mac Demarco meets Merle Haggard mishmash, like a second mezcal negroni before dinner.

Following successful Canadian and European tours in 2023, with showcases at Reeperbahn (Hamburg) and Come Together (Toronto) Skinny sets his sights on a new album in 2024.

Embark on a sonic journey of revelation in motion with Thunder Queens, the London, Ontario-based trio of Violet Bruneel, Lola Hayman, and Clara Magnan. On their debut full-length album, Strike One, Thunder Queens deliver a blend of doom-tinged grunge, onyx-toned punk melodies, and searing multi-part harmonies - all while creating a mesmerizing sound that is uniquely their own.

The band are unafraid to be experimental and shapeshift, conjuring the playful vitality of Sheer Mag, ground shaking range of Black Sabbath, and the urgency of The Runaways. Their raw energy and poignant lyricism show a band that’s played together for over half a decade while still being on the cusp of earning a driver’s license. Over 11 tracks, each riff and lyric paint a vivid picture of a world they’re still discovering, from the gauzy bliss of a sun-drenched road trip to the urgency of our fractured political landscape. Thunder Queens fearlessly explore a spectrum of emotions and themes with the unmatched curiosity of youth and solidarity that comes from nurturing a foundation of sisterhood.

Today they share the lead single and video, “Fighter”, a track the band penned at the tender ages of 9 and 10. Tired of hearing all the ways their generation was failing, this song was a proclamation of their dedication to fighting for what they believe in. Now, on the brink of high school, Lola, Violet, and Clara remain just as committed to fighting for a just cause as they did then.

MORE ABOUT THUNDER QUEENS
Lola Hayman (drums, vocals), Violet Bruneel (guitar, vocals), and Clara Magnan (bass, vocals) became friends while searching for loonies under the pinball machines at Call The Office. In between eating ice cream cones and wreaking havoc on their skateboards, they formed Thunder Queens.

The band have nailed their songwriting formula down to a science. They build the bones of shapeshifting riffs, dream up tones and harmonies, and weave stories into their songs. Similar to scoring a film, they visualize a cinematic treatment aligned around places they can see and words they can’t shake. (Like, “All These Problems” which they wrote during a summer of political unrest). Their writing, performances, and tenacity have earned them coveted spots alongside acclaimed Canadian acts like The Beaches, Metz, The Dirty Nil, Ombiigizi, and Daniel Romano, and to perform at Pop Montreal, Up Here Festival, and Bitchfest.

Strike One is the natural follow-up to their 2020 self-titled EP (Yeah Right! Records), expressing the hopes, fears, and joys, while also making razor-sharp observations on our culture. As they gaze at their surroundings, Thunder Queens remain clear-headed about the future, while continuing to push boundaries and stake their claim in the Industry.

"A disc of pure, impalpable beauty, weightless notes and melodies that pierce our hearts.... And the young woman, prey to a vagueness in the soul that she sublimates in a handful of magical songs, to offer us a twilight album, somewhere between Gillian Welch and Laura Veirs."
- Rolling Stone

“[Lapell’s] beautiful fourth album ‘Stolen Time’ is a moving collection of songs inspired by nature, the seasons, and her family’s experience as refugees fleeing eastern Europe during the Holocaust.” - The Guardian

“(‘Stolen Time’) The album’s apparent simplicities belie an emotionally complex set, a sequence that addresses an assortment of difficult subjects, energized throughout by Lapell’s sober yet deeply expressive voice.” - No Depression

“Lapell’s masterful skills on finger-style guitar, harmonica, piano once again return to effortlessly complement her eerily beautiful vocals.” - KUTX (NPR)

“Abigail writes songs that stop you right in your tracks.” - BrooklynVegan

Today, Toronto singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell returns with the announcement of her new album Anniversary, set for release on May 10 via Outside Music. An evocative collection of original love songs, the album balances upbeat earworms with elegiac ballads, ultimately emerging as an earnest celebration of commitment. Anniversary was recorded at the 200-year-old St. Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario and was produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker, who helped shape the project’s spooky, resonant sound while lending his voice to a few spellbinding duets.

Alongside the announcement, Abigail Lapell also shared the album’s lead single and video, “Anniversary Song”. Recorded live with her band in a 200-year-old church, the track features an in-house harpsichord along with drums, bass, electric guitar and layers of doubled vocals and harmonies, brought together with lyrics that celebrate the syntax and symbolism of commitment. Lapell says, “‘Anniversary Song’ was inspired by the idea of mashing-up traditional anniversary gifts (cotton, leather, diamonds) with the periodic table of elements (iron, carbon, silver) to celebrate the physical and symbolic bonds of togetherness.” A play on romantic ‘chemistry’, “Anniversary Song” highlights some of the album’s recurring dualities: literal and symbolic, earthly and otherworldly.

MORE ABOUT ANNIVERSARY
On Anniversary, Abigail Lapell interrogates the romantic ideal of growing old together. ‘Anniversary’ means literally ‘returning yearly’, and the album’s 11 songs track the revolving days, seasons, and years to celebrate and complicate the notion of eternal love. Across the project, Lapell drew inspiration from a series of personal milestones, including turning 40, along with the fifteenth anniversary of her father’s death – and, more recently, several weddings and births in her family. She offers a 40-something vision of love, haunted by the ghosts of departed loved ones, past relationships or even the spectre of faded youth.

Anniversary was fittingly recorded in a historic 200-year-old church adjoining a cemetery, complimenting the project’s resonant and hauntingly intimate theme. Lapell tapped Tony Dekker to co-produce the album, and the two assembled a stellar cast of musicians to round out Lapell’s vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle electric guitar. The ensemble’s sensitive, orchestral country-jazz arrangements reveal the depth of Lapell’s musical palette – making use of the church’s in-house piano, harpsichord and several antique organs.

Across the album, Lapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. “I wanted to explore some of the contradictions within the pop culture notion of love,” Lapell says. “These dichotomies of light and dark, love and loss, fleeting and eternal – even in the traditional wedding vows, ‘sickness and health, richer or poorer.’” Ultimately, while deconstructing the myths of romantic love, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment – acknowledging its tragedy and hope, and its power to haunt and console at the same time.

Anniversary comes on the heels of Abigail Lapell’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Stolen Time, and her project Lullabies, released in November of 2023. Over the course of her musical journey, Lapell has garnered three Canadian Folk Music Awards, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million+ streams on Spotify alone.
