HOMESHAKE — the long-running solo project of Toronto-based musician Peter Sagar — unveils the new single/video, “Empty Lot”, from his second album of 2024, Horsie, out June 28th via Dine Alone Records. Inspired by a dream Sagar had in a hotel, the song explores how dreams become a storage space for emotions, and whatever is leftover for the waking state.

The video for “Empty Lot”, starring Salina Ladha and directed by Jim Larson, follows singles “Nothing 2 See” and “Simple” and completes the trilogy of videos for Horsie. Inspired by the film Paris, Texas, the “Empty Lot” video opens with Peter abandoning his car in an empty parking lot and wandering into a desert before stumbling upon a limousine and beginning a psychedelic, dream-like journey, accented with fast transitioning colors. “The transformation is complete, and I can leave now” says Peter. “Paris, Texas is my favorite movie, Star Trek: The Next Generation is my favorite TV show, and ‘Windowlicker’ is my favorite music video.”

“The idea of the trilogy we came up with was for each video to represent the three main stages of touring and insert these themes that Pete said his album was about,” says Jim Larson. “‘Nothing 2 See’ was about Pete's relationship with playing live, "Simple" was about being on the road and the anxiety of rushing from gig to gig, and ‘Empty Lot’ is about finally coming home to your loved one transformed into a blue alien guy, filled with relief of making it through another tour.”

On June 27th, HOMESHAKE will also host an album listening and music video screening event at Brain Dead Studios to celebrate the release of Horsie.

MORE ABOUT HOMESHAKE
HOMESHAKE is the expression of how Peter experiences the world and the sounds he wants to hear in it. His sound is often imitated but has proven to be entirely his own; textural and profound, uniquely honoring his diverse influences but adrift within its own transportive imagination. Horsie employs various textures influenced by artists like Four Tet and My Bloody Valentine, the rhythmic forms of D’Angelo and Sade, and moments of ambient Americana found in the works of Ry Cooder. Peter approaches every album with the same frame of mind, composing purely for the joy of the moment without consideration to potential commercial reception. Now on his seventh album, a trip through the Homeshake catalog is one of evolution, reflection, self-love, and a clear-eyed realism about the world and a longing for the gentler place it could be.

Mustafa shares new single "Gaza is Calling," which arrives today alongside a Hiam Abbas-directed music video. The song, which was written in 2020, chronicles the story of one of Mustafa's childhood friendships that was affected by the kind of violence perpetrated against working-class communities worldwide and the plight specific to Palestinians. All net proceeds of "Gaza is Calling" will benefit the Palestinian Children's Relief Fund.

Speaking about the song, Mustafa shares:

“‘Gaza is Calling’ is about my first experience with heartbreak in friendship. I was 11 when I met this boy from Gaza. We were inseparable. With him I shared one of the deepest loves I’ve ever known, he grew up alongside me in a housing project in Toronto. And not even this love was a match for the violence we were up against; the one in our new home, the one that followed him from Gaza like a cold wind. In the end it was all the bloodshed between us that didn’t allow us to see each other without tears appearing, and one of the last notes he sent to me was about how we would continue on in another life.

“The string sample is the Arabian nostalgia that we share, the autotuned Arabic I sing is the balance we tried to reach being boys of cultural empires in a small hood, and the Oud is the instrument of our homelands, Sudan and Palestine.”

The video for "Gaza is Calling" prominently features Palestinian model Bella Hadid and teenage Gazan rapper MC Abdul and was concepted by Mustafa and Hadid in 2021. While much of the video was shot as early as April of 2023, it also features footage captured on the ground in Jenin as recently as last week, again speaking to both the timelessness and timeliness of its message.

Speaking further about the video, Mustafa says:

“I reached out to Bella in 2022 about the ‘Gaza Is Calling’ short film. I wrote a story about a grief that meets you on whatever land you escape to. In it we follow Bella Hadid and Mc Abdul of Gaza as they journey through their grievances. A parallel story of Israa Ahmed and her younger brother plays out. Israa and her brother engage in the ruins and danger of a refugee camp in Palestine as Bella and Abdul engage with memorabilia and guilt in the western world. Hiam Abbas directs. Israa and her brother are still in this camp in Jenin, Palestine today. The hope is that this serves as a stark reminder that every path is ours, every child is ours, and every war is ours to answer for and speak against.”

Today, Winnipeg’s Super Duty Tough Work is releasing the extended version of their 2023 mission statement-esque debut full-length Paradigm Shift. Available everywhere, Paradigm Shift Extended expands on that thought by releasing the full instrumental version of the record, accompanied by one b-side, “Watershedding”, and two previously released tracks from their debut record, Studies in Grey.

The group is also pulling back the curtain and sharing the behind-the-scenes documentary, ‘Making Of Paradigm Shift’. “It’s interesting to watch this documentary now, as it was shot almost 3 years ago,” notes Brendan Grey. “It definitely captures the feeling and vibe of those particular moments. It’s pretty pure in some regards. It’s funny to reflect on that time now, given how much time has passed and how some things have changed, within the world and within the group. Glad we were able to capture all that at that time because, as I said on ‘Watershedding’, ‘things will never be the same’.”

MORE ABOUT PARADIGM SHIFT EXTENDED
Switching focus from the lyrics to the music, the instrumental record offers listeners a chance  to really absorb the rhythmic and harmonic ideas laid down by the band, because this is a  band after all. The static-heavy syncopation of drummers Brendan Grey and Kevin Waters, with low-end support of bassist Ashley Au, only to be further embellished by bursts of sax and guitar from Olivier Macharia and Gaby Ocejo, is at the forefront of this release, as listeners are led to embrace the often overlooked foundations for the searing commentary that typically dominates Super Duty reviews.

In addition to the instrumental tracks, a lost cut from the Paradigm Shift sessions is featured.  “Watershedding” is a smooth yet haunting, forward-moving yet relaxed offering, filled in typical  Super Duty Tough Work fashion with sparse yet tasteful staticky piano and lyrics so layered,  you’ll be looking for the footnotes to catch every reference. Navigating a new era,  “Watershedding” finds frontman Brendan Grey drawing on the past as he tries to make sense of  the present, lamenting on everything from mind reading algorithms and corporations  supporting genocide, to the effect all of the above has on one’s psyche. Yet despite the despair, Grey maintains his wit (“My style is like the Black Adder meets the Black Panthers”), his focus (“Each move made with a purpose, stay watching like closed circuits…”) and his commitment to his listeners and the art (“So when I rhyme it’s sincerely yours”), all while continuing to show that he is the master of paying homage to his influences and citing his sources.

References to Clyde Stubblefield and James Brown are particularly poignant, as the drums on this cut (played by Grey) are caught somewhere between quintessential Stubblefield (think Funky Drummer) and a more contemporary J Dilla stutter. The crunchy keys and muffled  bass are accentuated by the supremely tasteful guitar playing of JUNO Award winning jazz guitarist Joceyln Gould, and the airy vocal harmonies of Afro-Iraqi musician Ahmed Moneka, who’s voice is distant yet felt, positioned and mixed to sound more like a sample from an old record, than a live recording. Static, piano loops, thumbing kick drums, trashy hi-hats, no real chorus, hopelessness, optimism and of course, a Nas reference?! Sounds like Super Duty Tough Work.
