In May, Toronto-born-and-raised singer, songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Charlotte Day Wilson released her highly-anticipated sophomore album, Cyan Blue via Stone Woman Music / XL Recordings. Working alongside producers Leon Thomas (SZA, Ariana Grande, Post Malone), and Jack Rochon (Beyoncé, H.E.R, Daniel Caesar) on Cyan Blue, Day Wilson crafts a smoothly woven cyan tapestry of her eternal influences - thumping gospel piano, warm soul basslines, atmospheric electronics, and penetrating R&B melodies - while also showcasing the next evolution of her time-bending songwriting. Released to wide acclaim, Cyan Blue was hailed by CLASH as “Wilson’s best work to date,” while Billboard declared, “Wilson occupies a lane distinct from most burgeoning R&B stars.”

Since then, Charlotte Day Wilson has taken her stunning live show across North America. During her performances, she was deeply moved by the audience's reception to the soul-bearing and poetic "My Way". In response, Day Wilson today releases a live performance video of the track, shot by Josh Renaut. Accompanied by Ryan Macdonald on drums, Ian Culley on guitar, and Ourielle Auvé on harp, "My Way (Live)" offers fans a unique opportunity to experience Day Wilson’s refined lyricism and soulful, captivating stage presence.

This month, Charlotte Day Wilson returns to the UK and Europe for a run of live shows before travelling back to Canada to perform with Feist, then heading on to Japan and Mexico. Full tour dates are below, for further information or to buy tickets, head to charlottedaywilson.com/Tour

Wilson’s influence in music has made a major mainstream impact. She first broke out in 2016 with her critically acclaimed EP, CDW, followed by 2018’s Stone Woman and made her debut studio album an official coming out moment in 2021 with the critically acclaimed, self-released Alpha. Over the past decade, she’s been sampled by Drake, John Mayer, and James Blake. Additionally, she’s collaborated with artists like Kaytranada, BADBADNOTGOOD, Snoh Aalegra and SG Lewis, demonstrating that there’s no sound Wilson can’t adapt to and sprinkle her cyan-coloured magic over.

RECENT PRAISE ON CHARLOTTE DAY WILSON

“Few can hit the notes Charlotte Day Wilson hits, and her commitment to emotional truth remains thoroughly undimmed. Her audio building is subtle but distinctive, the spartan template resulting in something so pure, and so evocative” – Clash Magazine

“a deeply personal and introspective collection of songs that seek to discover beauty in heartbreak and find solace in recognizing the limitations of love.” The Toronto Star

“Gorgeous and devastating… Sublime and understated” – Wonderland

“Charlotte Day Wilson’s name has become a sign that you’re in for great things” – The Line Of Best Fit

“As always, Day Wilson's arresting alto is the focus but a warbled vocal sample that repeats in the background adds a haunting, early James Blake feel to the track. If the rest of Cyan Blue is equally moving, fans are in for a treat.” CBC Music

“Wilson directly channels soul music of decades past but also inhabits that same minimalist expanse occupied by so many of her contemporaries.” - NPR

“The Toronto singer-songwriter and producer’s vast voice is like a canyon that the sun can’t access; the percolating soul and quiet storm that surround it flicker like candlelight….Her voice—and what a voice, deep and passionate, cast in the mold of Anita Baker—feels less crepuscular, less intimate, and more capable of levitating cars and uprooting whole forests.”- Pitchfork

“Blending elements of jazz, soul, folk, and R&B, Wilson writes deeply personal lyrics and delivers them with the expertise of a seasoned vocalist.” - Complex

“she's got the type of slow-burning, smoldering jazz and R&B-influenced sound that already feels classic.”- NYLON

“Charlotte expertly pulls inspirations from jazz, R&B and soul and what results is an atmosphere that is solely her own.” - Hypebeast

Montreal indie collective Busty and the Bass are sharing "Smoke and the Pine (The Breakglass Version)", the second piece from the collective's new live off-the-floor video series. The soulful, 70s singer-songwriter inspired track, exploring nostalgia and longing, now features lush horn arrangements and rich vocal harmonies, further enhancing the idea of moments onced cherished: ‘I come back to feel you / The lost and lonely ride through the smoke and the pine’.

Directed by Guillaume Landry, the video is live-off-the-floor and filmed in one shot. The recording, therefore, is slightly altered from the original album version and is catered to fit this live, one-shot dynamic. It features a lush horn arrangement (which includes Chris Edmondson on alto saxophone) and stacked background vocal harmonies from Jordan Brown and Mel Pacifico.

“The song is an ode to where I'm from in the Pacific Northwest,” says Alistair Blu. “It’s about all of the sensations and nostalgia I feel from my upbringing on Vancouver Island and the mixed emotions of leaving them all behind. It's about being there with someone you love in the presence of feeling at home.”

MORE ABOUT BUSTY AND THE BASS
For the Canadian-American soul-jazz collective Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their music. Formed at McGill University in Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. Yet, with a collaborative spirit at the heart of their third studio album, Forever Never Cares, the members have never been more connected.

Over the years, the group has collaborated with legendary artists George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders. Most recently, the group dropped a mini-album with Philadelphia poet and rapper STS. Despite such a strong history of partnerships, Forever Never Cares reshaped the band’s creative formula and redefined how they worked together a decade into their career.

After a founding member and primary songwriter left the band in 2022, the collective used the opportunity to re-approach their creative process for the first time in years. Songs would be brought to the group from individual members or smaller formations of two or three members writing together. Interestingly, more voices involved in the songwriting resulted in the group’s most refined output to date.

Two previous studio albums, Uncommon Good (2017) and Eddie (2020), saw the band experiment with genres effortlessly changing styles song to song, from soul to funk to pop.

Forever Never Cares finds the collective both broadening and distilling their influences into a unified sound that is entirely their own. This is due in large part to founding member Christopher Vincent who engineered and mixed the album. Vincent found a sonic language that would compliment all of the disparate genres being stacked atop one another.

With soul and R&B as the album’s cornerstone, the record is sprinkled with cross-genre explorations. From the indie rock-inflected uptempo singles “All The Things I Couldn’t Say To You” and “Wandering Lies,” to slow-burn ballads like “Give Me A Smile” and “Never Get Enough,” to the celebratory pop-funk of “Starstruck” and “No Angels,” a touch of 70s singer-songwriter on Smoke and the Pine” and “Holiday Drive,” and the psychedelic jazz explorations of “Far From Here” and “No Self Control” featuring saxophonist Terrace Martin, a frequent collaborator of Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper.

Today, Dan Mangan is announcing the Being Elsewhere Mix CD, a follow up collection to his JUNO Award nominated, Polaris Music Prize Short Listed album Being Somewhere, bringing together everything you know and love about Dan - from reimagined versions of fan-favourites on the album, covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Damien Jurado, and the Lumineers, and new songs like "Call Me Up High". “This collection of music is exciting to me because it lives outside the confined pressures of album cohesion. The vision is to embrace the chaos of my differing creative impulses and let them breathe together.”

On the collection’s genesis, Mangan says, “When I started dating my wife in 2006, her Hyundai Accent was broken into and all of her CDs were stolen. I burned her three mix CDs so she’d have something to listen to whilst driving, and so that I could indoctrinate her with a slew of my favourite songs. Those songs still live in the lore of our relationship nearly 20 years later. Though streaming has since curtailed the Mix CD tradition, the format always managed to yield an intentionally esoteric mashup of ideas that modern playlisting doesn’t quite provide.

“Through twists and turns over two and a half years of long distance production, many songs on Being Somewhere strayed wildly from my initial voice memo demos. This was an exciting and integral part of the process, but I wanted to indulge my itch to reimagine a few of those songs.

“At the same time, my hard drive was filling up with other creative projects. I’d recorded a few songs for films and some random covers, as well as the single ‘Say When…’ and then ‘Call Me Up High’ came out of nowhere and blindsided me - I couldn’t wait for a whole other album cycle to have this song in the world.”

Out today, "Call Me Up High" was recorded with deadmen (Matt Peters, Matt Schellenberg) while in Los Angeles. I vividly remember feeling overlooked by girls in high school,” says Mangan. “I knew I had something special to offer, but most of my crushes were unrequited. ‘Nice guy’ tropes aside, I had this sinking feeling that if they were in a tough situation, I could help, and they’d see how awesome I was.

“I brought up this concept with the deadmen and there was a lightning storm of creativity. The entire song came together in about 4 hours. It was extremely exciting and eerily easy. Everything moved so quickly and ‘Call Me Up High’ sounds like nothing I’ve ever been a part of before. Most of my music is for the heart and the head, but I can’t listen to this song without moving my body. “

The new single arrives complete with a video from Director Lester Lyons-Hookham. “When we were testing mixes for ‘Call Me Up High’, I’d go for a quick drive and blast it,” explains Mangan of the video’s concept. “I couldn’t help but dance around the car every time the chorus dropped and other drivers would smirk at me. Lester helped to expand on this initial concept - the embarrassment of enjoying something wholeheartedly, and the mutual embarrassment we experience in fumbled moments with strangers.

“The first reveal is that I’m singing to my teenaged daughter rather than a love interest - as there’s nothing more embarrassing to a teen than their parents. The second reveal is that my teenaged son has been doom scrolling in the back seat all day while I cruise around indulging my 90s R&B music video fantasies.”
