Today, His His, the recording project of Toronto-based artist Aidan Belo, announces his new EP, Good Gold Cassette, set for release on November 15, 2024 via Victory Pool Records. Combining elements of Greenwich Village-inspired folk, contemporary indie folk, coupled with low fidelity analog production, His His creates something that sounds honest and melancholic.

Good Gold Cassette is a record inspired by his dad, claims Belo. “One of the earliest memories I have with my dad is driving in his old Nissan pickup truck in the early 2000s going to get 1000 bales of discounted hay that a farmer that lived nearby was trying to clear his barn of to make room for the new harvested hay. I remember watching my dad pack 30 or so bales at a time bringing it from the farmer’s barn to ours. It took a long time, and it was blazing hot.

“A cassette of Breakfast in America by Supertramp (easily my dad’s favourite band after Pink Floyd) was what we listened to over and over again. I was fascinated at how this little piece of plastic produced these amazing sounds. At one point when my dad was moving hay while I was sitting in the car, I decided to press eject on the cassette player. I pulled the cassette out and looked at it closely. It made no sense to me, but I saw the little black coils of magnetic tape inside and on the bottom, it was exposed. I started to pull it out and before I knew it, all of the tape was on the floor of the Nissan pickup. When my dad came back inside of the truck, I could see the look in his eyes, and it was then that I first remember the feeling of guilt. He didn’t get mad, but I knew I did something wrong. The Supertramp cassette was replaced, and then eventually the cassette player in the truck was replaced by a newer truck with a cd player. To me, it never sounded the same as it did on that old, well-loved cassette that sat out on the dashboard cooking in the sun when it wasn’t in the console. That day sparked my love for and interest of cassettes.”

His His is also sharing the new single and video, “Get-Go”, which was written “after going through old voice notes on my phone,” says Belo. “‘New Recording 315’ was a voice memo that had the guitar riff and verse melody, albeit with lyrics that were indistinguishable other than “I’ve got a new home”. The track was centred around this original voice memo and the demo was written and tracked to my Tascam Portastudio. My dad came to Canada in 1991 with a little more than the clothes in his suitcase. It’s loosely about the excitement of moving to a new place, a new home.”

MORE ABOUT GOOD GOLD CASSETTE + HIS HIS
Good Gold Cassette was originally planned to be a digital and cassette-only release as every track on the EP began on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track cassette recorder. “The recording process began with 4 tracks starting on the cassette recorder (usually guitars and vocals) and were then bounced to my computer afterwards and built upon from there,” explains Belo. “They were sent again to tape during the mixing stage to help glue the tracks together. The EP is far from perfect, but that’s what I love about it. It’s a simple production of some tracks that I wrote in the early winter months of 2024. It was recorded with a couple of ribbon and dynamic mics, some old guitars, a (partially broken) 70s fender champ, a weathered drum kit, some bits and bobs I had laying around the space, lots of coffee, and a lot of magnetic tape and cassettes.”

Since the first His His release in late 2020, this project has generated more than 1,000,000 streams across Spotify and Apple Music, and has been featured on CBC Music and SiriusMX’s The Verge.

Everything is recorded in the empty space of an old wood barn on his family’s farm which has been temporarily converted into a makeshift studio, where everything is recorded entirely to 1⁄4 inch tape and cassette.

His His made their live debut at POP International Music Festival 2022 in Montreal and have since showcased at SXSW 2023 + 2024.

Today, Charlotte Cornfield announces her new single, “Audience of One”. Produced by Bonny Light Horseman’s Josh Kaufman, the song is the latest page in Cornfield’s beloved and flourishing songbook, and arrives ahead of her upcoming fall tour which will see her traveling from Hamilton, down through Colorado to New Mexico, and back up the west coast towards Vancouver before returning to Ontario.

Once described as “Canada’s best-kept secret” by Rolling Stone, Cornfield’s critically lauded craft has long led an impassioned trail of discovery behind her, with an ever-expanding circle of fans and esteemed peers. Speaking to the deeper meaning behind her latest single, Cornfield shares the following:

“I’ve always been fascinated by the way that fear permeates my dreams. It meanders through vaguely recognizable surroundings, attaching itself to shadowy figures along the way. When I wrote this song I was picturing myself in one of those dream states, crashing an out of control vehicle and then performing to no one except a single ghost-like audience member. In the chorus I am reasoning with myself, trying to let go of the fear and worry that haunts me. I recorded ‘Audience of One’ with Josh Kaufman after we had finished making most of Could Have Done Anything. Annie Nero sang this stunning backing vocal, and it just felt like a song that needed to live on its own.”

“Audience of One” follows the release of Cornfield’s fifth album, 2023’s Could Have Done Anything – which the FADER praised as “full of the remarkable tenderness and deft storytelling,” and eloquently described by Pitchfork as being “a brief and lovely alt-folk record, vivid and unmoored from place and time.” Dates for Cornfield’s upcoming tour can be found below.

PRAISE FOR CHARLOTTE CORNFIELD & COULD HAVE DONE ANYTHING

“Cornfield is a sharp-eyed songwriter, who, like her contemporary Courtney Barnett, is particularly adept at both reinforcing and undercutting the emotional core of her narratives with quotidian detail and slacker silliness” —Rolling Stone, Artist You Need To Know

“Charlotte Cornfield always fills her lyrics with beautiful, evocative images” - Exclaim!

“Charlotte Cornfield is a songwriter who brings a sense of profundity to the simplest of phrases… ‘Could Have Done Anything’ is full of the remarkable tenderness and deft storytelling Cornfield is known for” — The FADER

"...a brief and lovely alt-folk record, vivid and unmoored from place and time…Cornfield’s words linger long after the record is over, thanks in part to her lovely and understated vocal delivery: a capacious alto, generously raspy, the influence of Lucinda Williams plain." — Pitchfork

“...her clearest-eyed assemblage of songs yet” — Paste

"The further you dig into the Canadian songwriter’s newest collection of sunset-folk, the more you realize how hard it is to sound this casual—and how much of a joy it is to see an artist continue to come into their own.” — FLOOD

“...a well-crafted set of bittersweet folk-pop combining acoustic and electric guitars and atmospheric keyboards with richly detailed lyrics of love, loss, friendship and heartache.” — KEXP

Today, Dan Mangan is releasing the Being Elsewhere Mix CD, a follow up collection to his JUNO Award nominated, Polaris Music Prize Shortlisted album Being Somewhere, bringing together everything you know and love about Dan - from reimagined versions of fan-favourites on the album, covers of songs by Bob Dylan, Damien Jurado, and the Lumineers, and new songs like "Four Chords".

“Four Chords” is about “getting over yourself and just surrendering to the sweetness found in love,” says Mangan. “There was a moment at my wedding, late in the dance party - Tyler from Said The Whale was crushing a rendition of ‘You Make My Dreams Come True’ by Hall & Oates, backed by Yukon Blonde. My wife and I were standing on a speaker stack. Everyone was dancing like the world was ending and it just felt like a perfect moment. All of our friends and family, lost in the thick of the weight of everything. Like a photograph in my mind. Laden with gratitude and nostalgia.

“I wrote this song with my pal Andy Stochansky. He’s a big sappy sweetheart who is unafraid to write love songs. I’ve always resisted love songs because it’s hard to write one that isn’t riddled with cliche. He really encouraged me to tap into my sappy sweetheart side and I’m thankful he did, because I think this song unlocked something for me as a songwriter. I don’t know if I could have written ‘Find New Ways’ if I hadn’t written ‘Four Chords’ first.”

MORE ABOUT BEING ELSEWHERE MIX CD
On the collection’s genesis, Mangan says, “When I started dating my wife in 2006, her Hyundai Accent was broken into and all of her CDs were stolen. I burned her three mix CDs so she’d have something to listen to whilst driving, and so that I could indoctrinate her with a slew of my favourite songs. Those songs still live in the lore of our relationship nearly 20 years later. Though streaming has since curtailed the Mix CD tradition, the format always managed to yield an intentionally esoteric mashup of ideas that modern playlisting doesn’t quite provide.

“Through twists and turns over two and a half years of long distance production, many songs on Being Somewhere strayed wildly from my initial voice memo demos. This was an exciting and integral part of the process, but I wanted to indulge my itch to reimagine a few of those songs.

“At the same time, my hard drive was filling up with other creative projects. I’d recorded a few songs for films and some random covers, as well as the single ‘Say When’ and then ‘Call Me Up High’ came out of nowhere and blindsided me - I couldn’t wait for a whole other album cycle to have this song in the world.”
