Ada Lea (the moniker of Montreal’s Alexandra Levy) has released a new EP, “notes”, a collection of songs written at the same time as her sophomore album, one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden.

To celebrate, the acclaimed songwriter is sharing the music video “i-95”, a fun, day-dreamy crush song worked up by Ada Lea and collaborator Emilie Kahn. “Emilie Kahn and I wrote this song in one sitting, using the corny drum machine sound on an Omnichord to get us grooving.” Ada Lea comments, “The song is about driving to NY with your crush. Hot scenes playing out in your mind. I love how the song blurs the space between fiction and reality.” Out along with the track is an animated music video created by Ada Lea who shared, “I’m still very much a beginner with animation, so if I think too hard about whether what I’m doing is good or not, I lose all hope. At each step, I was in my “first thought best thought” mode—from which drawing I would use as the base, to the decision to add sunglasses and a neon green bralette and angel wings to the figures.”

MORE ABOUT ADA LEA
Ada Lea is the musical project of Montreal-based songwriter Alexandra Levy. She released her debut album, what we say in private, and her sophomore album, one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden, both on Saddle Creek and Next Door Records. Ada Lea’s songs feature melodies that are at once classic and unique, and lyrical narratives that are both autobiographical and fictional. After extensive touring with her band, she is now putting the finishing touches on her third record.

PRAISE FOR one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden

“‘damn,’ from the Montreal-based singer-songwriter Ada Lea, unfolds like a quiet epiphany: a gradual accumulation of feelings and frustrations that, in an instant, snap into a sudden clarity.” - The New York Times

“[‘damn’ is] propulsive, unsettling and exquisite – and an impressive way to kick off an album.” - NPR Music

“[one hand on the steering wheel the other sewing a garden] separates itself from the pack of a lot of similar folk music being made nowadays by being particularly crisp and well-defined.” - Stereogum

Today, producer/artist and multi-instrumentalist Maddie Jay announces the new album, I Can Change Your Mind, set for release on January 10, 2025. “I wrote many of these songs over improvised tape loops that I recorded with my dear friends in hazy late night studio sessions,” Maddie explains. “I wanted to create a sonic bed that felt organic, nostalgic, immersive and emotionally cathartic. Working outside of solitude was a challenge for me, however I feel the end result resonates much stronger than something I would have created alone, which is probably a lesson in itself.”

Following on previous singles “I’m The Leader” and “Name Your Price”, today Maddie shares another album track. “Chemical” is a song that “feels like smoking a little bit too much weed when you were already anxious and laying on top of your covers with a light breeze coming in through and having an absolute internal meltdown,” says Maddie. “It’s about the pain of simply existing and trying to rationalize why it’s all so intense and confusing by labeling everything as a chemical and disconnecting from the emotional side of things. This song was a collaboration with a few friends, we wrote the Radiohead/aphex twin type outro very late in the studio one night and immediately knew we had something special.”

MORE ABOUT I CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND
“The style of songwriting I chose to pursue for this project came about while reflecting on my past projects,” Maddie explains. “I realized when listening to some of those old lyrics that I had unknowingly narrated the subtleties of an abusive relationship, described the feeling of intense codependence, and exposed my inner workings in some unflattering ways, all while thinking I was writing simple love songs.

“Each of these tracks was born in an effort to crystalize a feeling of overwhelm in my life over the last two years. They speak from within the headspace of addiction, loss of control, isolation, mania, codependence, and fear that I will never reach my full potential. By allowing myself to become an unreliable narrator, I felt able to understand the volatile internal negotiation between the person I am, and the person I aspire to be.”

RUBY SINGH ANNOUNCES VOX.INFOLD II, SHARES FIRST SINGLE

Multi-award winning composer and producer Ruby Singh announces the first single, “The Chase” from the upcoming album, Vox.Infold II, a follow up to the JUNO Award nominated and WCMA winning record, Vox.Infold. This acappella work brings together the potent voices of Indigenous, Inuit, Black, and South Asian voices for a sensuous and deep, fully realized sound that weaves the past, present and future into a monumental record.

What is it that motivates us? What is it that drives us? “The Chase” the first single from Vox.Infold II sets motion and music to these questions. Housed in the ever shifting soundscape of euclidean rhythms, this composition propels us forward with interlocking Katajjaq (Inuit throat singing), beat boxing and soaring melodies. As a predator is hunting their prey and prey attempts to outrun its predator, a feverish desire to survive lies underneath the notes and rhythms of this song. A yearning to quench that which helps us endure our limited time on this earth.

The new single arrives with a video in collaboration with Chimerik 似不像, a multi-award winning, interdisciplinary nonprofit organization comprised of artists from underrepresented groups across various disciplines. The creative process for developing this video was born from the feelings evoked by the song itself; a desire to emulate and represent the journey of the hunt, the way in which landscapes and predators can play tricks on the mind and keep you on edge, always shifting, always responding. The visual component of the project integrates cutting-edge media art techniques to bring the film to life. It employs real-time visual software like Isadora to dynamically adjust visual layers in response to  various sound elements. Additionally, the project features a unique use of 360-degree video, with Chimerik incorporating footage captured by Ruby during his explorations in nature. This 360 video is layered and transformed to enrich the artistic expression of the work.

MORE ABOUT VOX.INFOLD II
Ruby Singh’s Vox.Infold II explores the gateways on either side of life with songs that welcome incoming souls, mark our time on this earthly plane and honour the outgoing spirits to our ancestors. The album plays within cyclical time echoing (mirroring) the transitions between spirit, birth, life, death and the return to spirit. From the opening song “Solar” that invites the spirits to return to this earthly plane, to the last track “Mojuba,” a Vox.Infold take on a traditional Yoruban Hymn, that  the ancestors sing for us, as we cross over into the next world, inviting us to return to our eternal home. The ensemble consists of PIQSIQ’s Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay, Dawn Pemberton, Russell Wallace, Shamik Bilgi, Tiffany Moses, Hussein Janmohamed and Singh himself to bring together a full bodied, resonant and sensorial expression of our spirits  journeys housed in polyrhythm, polymeter,  lush harmonies, and polyphonic poetry.

“Over the past number of years I’ve lost many elders in my family and, at the same time, a whole lot of beautiful little babies have come into our community. This album was created both as a welcome to the new ones joining us and as prayer for those that have passed, for so much of human history we have used song as a ritual marker for two of life's biggest events: birth and death. Well composing the album I began to think about the music I would like to hear on my own deathbed and realized how similar that would be to a lullaby, on all sides of life we want to feel the love of our dear ones. So this album is an expression of that love we carry for our young ones and our elders as they journey to and from the spirit world.”
