Tomorrow, OMBIIGIZI, the Anishinaabe-Canadian band led by Daniel Monkman (aka Zoon) and Adam Sturgeon (aka Status/Non-Status), will release their sophomore album, SHAME.

OMBIIGIZI embarks on a starkly honest, yet richly uplifting journey on their new album. "Shame is a thing we all share," the band says of the album's title and core theme. "While the last album [2022’s debut Sewn Back Together] focused a lot on the positive force of healing despite odds, SHAME let’s things slide - it shares the things we don’t always say, it calls to others to heal and reminds them it’s OK - to feel, to be angry or sad, and that the world we experience can set the drag on high. But always it calls you in and forward."

Ahead of the release of SHAME, they are highlighting the track "Street Names and Land Claims." 'We are the effect and our shame is hard to define,' OMBIIGIZI sings over the sounds of their towering guitars constructed on ancient syncopated rhythms, the band's quintessential blend of modern and traditional elements. Charged by its themes of Indigenous land rights and colonization, the poetry and distortion of Adam Sturgeon unites with the vast soundscapes of Daniel Monkman, as OMBIIGIZI ride the razor's edge of society's confrontation with Mother Nature.

“‘Street Names and Land Claims’ was another song where it was really fun to push ourselves into territories of interesting timing, rhythm, and adding a bit more grit to the table," remarks Sturgeon. "The lyrics are totally abstract and confused just like the spiritually broke language of English. And we really played on that theme a lot with juxtapositions and the silly things that people put in their pockets to inform themselves that they’re living in the right way, and that everything is a contradiction.

"We need to drive to the environmental protest. We have to spend eight million dollars on the echo-chic pants. Our lattes cost $12 and we’re not giving the change to the people sitting outside the coffee shop," he continues. "So ‘Street Names and Land Claims,’ even the song title is very time-appropriate as we tear down statues."

Through SHAME’s irrepressible storytelling and captivating sonics, again recorded with Nyles Spencer with Kevin Drew at The Tragically Hip's Bathouse Studio in Kingston, Ontario – promising better tone, wider strident-to-bliss dynamics, more of what this collusion of creative souls does best – OMBIIGIZI (pronounced om-BEE-ga-ZAY, meaning this is noisy) conjure a future from the remnants of the stolen past.

“Ultimately, the main point of the songs is that within each of us is an ability to love oneself and to heal.”

Singer, songwriter and producer Cold Specks (aka Al Spx) releases a new track, “Wandering in the Wild”, co-written with Chantal Kreviazuk. The stripped-back beauty of “Wandering in the Wild” is inspired by Spx’s months in the psychiatric ward (‘If we survive, can we smile and be not sorry anymore / If they decide we’re free, to run and scream / Will we jump for joy?’), and how she survived an incredibly difficult time preceding her bipolar diagnosis.

“Wandering in the Wild” - which follows “How It Feels”, the artist’s first music in seven years - was primarily written by Kreviazuk, following a long discussion with Al Spx about her experiences in the ward. Spx goes on to explain, “I used to be really precious about holding on to as much song writing as possible but then I remembered James Carr did not write ‘The Dark End of the Street’. Thank you, Chantal, for such a timeless piece of music.”

The spellbinding ballad has an illuminating grace and sense of freedom, as the artist looks back on that time. Al Spx produced and performed the track, recorded by Graham Walsh (of Holy Fuck), and it features piano by Johnny Spence, strings by composer Owen Pallett and brass by long-time collaborator Terry Edwards.

Since she arrived in our lives with an unforgettable a capella performance on Later… with Jools Holland in 2011, Cold Specks has mixed crackling, pared-down guitar blues, gothic soul, gospel and warm electronics in three albums which won Polaris Music Prize and JUNO Award nominations: 2012’s I Predict A Graceful Expulsion, 2014’s Neuroplasticity and 2017’s Fool’s Paradise. Her musical stretch is vast: Al Spx has worked with Swans, Massive Attack, Moby and performed at Joni Mitchell’s birthday concert.

Acclaimed composer and producer Ruby Singh continues to push musical boundaries with the release of his latest single, "Radiate", from the forthcoming album Vox.Infold II, a follow-up to his JUNO Award-nominated and Western Canada Music Award-winning project Vox.Infold. This second single offers a sensuous and introspective journey, blending a cappella mastery with a deep and rich tapestry of voices.

“Radiate” defies pop convention, unfolding at its own pace, beginning with an ember of droning voices before building and expanding into a powerful and emotional flame of polyphonic poetry and complex, interlocking melodies. The composition tracks a personal awakening of liberation through sound “unlocking wings in your throat,” explains Singh.

This a cappella piece brings together Indigenous, Black, and South Asian voices, highlighting the sheer force of collective vocalization in a musical exploration that intertwines the past, present, and future “Penetrating time through being, before the after of now.” It’s a moody, contemplative, and sultry single that stands as an ode to the transformative power of song in our lives, “these hymns bring worlds upon worlds into existence.”

Featuring the soaring vocals of Dawn Pemberton and Tiffany Moses, with the rhythmic stylings of Shamik Bilgi and Ruby Singh himself, “Radiate” immerses listeners in a sonic landscape that vibrates with emotional depth and vibrant (non-linear) storytelling. With Vox.Infold II, Singh once again demonstrates his ability to craft monumental records that not only honour ancestral legacies but also push the boundaries of contemporary music. This latest single is a testament to his vision, artistry, and the powerful impact of voice in shaping our shared musical future.

The single arrives with a video from non-profit organization Chimerik 似不像 who are deeply grateful for their continued creative collaborations with Ruby Singh, most recently for the music video "Radiate". This visual work blends ritualistic choreography, inspired by the rhythmic pulse of the music, like the steady beat of a heart. Motion capture data is transformed into ghostly particle visuals, seamlessly integrating with stunning microscopic footage specifically captured for the project. The video invites reflection on the interconnectedness between the micro and macro levels of existence, layering and transforming each element to deepen the artistic expression and meaning of the work.

MORE ABOUT VOX.INFOLD II
Ruby Singh’s Vox.Infold II explores the gateways on either side of life with songs that welcome incoming souls, mark our time on this earthly plane and honour the outgoing spirits to our ancestors. The album plays within cyclical time echoing (mirroring) the transitions between spirit, birth, life, death and the return to spirit. From the opening song “Solar” that invites the spirits to return to this earthly plane, to the last track “Mojuba,” a Vox.Infold take on a traditional Yoruban Hymn, that  the ancestors sing for us, as we cross over into the next world, inviting us to return to our eternal home. The ensemble consists of PIQSIQ’s Tiffany Ayalik and Inuksuk Mackay, Dawn Pemberton, Russell Wallace, Shamik Bilgi, Tiffany Moses, Hussein Janmohamed and Singh himself to bring together a full bodied, resonant and sensorial expression of our spirits  journeys housed in polyrhythm, polymeter,  lush harmonies, and polyphonic poetry.

“Over the past number of years I’ve lost many elders in my family and, at the same time, a whole lot of beautiful little babies have come into our community. This album was created both as a welcome to the new ones joining us and as prayer for those that have passed, for so much of human history we have used song as a ritual marker for two of life's biggest events: birth and death. Well composing the album I began to think about the music I would like to hear on my own deathbed and realized how similar that would be to a lullaby, on all sides of life we want to feel the love of our dear ones. So this album is an expression of that love we carry for our young ones and our elders as they journey to and from the spirit world.”

The album launch will take place at LOBE’s 4D Spatial Sound Studio in Vancouver on November 29 and 30, featuring live spatial playbacks, an XR lounge with Mixed and Augmented Reality Experiences of Mojuba along with artist talk backs. More info and tickets can be found here.
