Today, His His, the recording project of Toronto-based artist Aidan Belo, is sharing the final single before the release of  his upcoming EP, Good Gold Cassette, out Friday via Victory Pool Records.

The EP’s penultimate track, “Cabra” translates to ‘goat” in Portuguese. “Last time my dad and brother were in my dad’s hometown in rural northeast Portugal they built a small boat/barge out of wood, cork tree bark, and brought it down the river that runs through town, just like my dad had done as a kid in the 70s and 80s. It was the highlight of the trip for them,” says Belo.

“This song is about my father leaving his family in Portugal, moving to Canada in his early 20s to start a new life. My grandfather died when my dad was 7, and being the oldest in the household, he assumed responsibility for his 4 other siblings, and played a big hand in raising my aunts and uncles, helping his newly widowed mother raise his siblings. This song is about the inevitable guilt of leaving the tight-knit family unit and moving across the Atlantic to start his own family. Perhaps what makes my dad such a great man and father is that it’s his second time being the father figure.”

MORE ABOUT GOOD GOLD CASSETTE + HIS HIS
Good Gold Cassette is a record inspired by his dad, claims Belo. “One of the earliest memories I have with my dad is driving in his old Nissan pickup truck in the early 2000s going to get 1000 bales of discounted hay that a farmer that lived nearby was trying to clear his barn of to make room for the new harvested hay. I remember watching my dad pack 30 or so bales at a time bringing it from the farmer’s barn to ours. It took a long time, and it was blazing hot.

“A cassette of Breakfast in America by Supertramp (easily my dad’s favourite band after Pink Floyd) was what we listened to over and over again. I was fascinated at how this little piece of plastic produced these amazing sounds. At one point when my dad was moving hay while I was sitting in the car, I decided to press eject on the cassette player. I pulled the cassette out and looked at it closely. It made no sense to me, but I saw the little black coils of magnetic tape inside and on the bottom, it was exposed. I started to pull it out and before I knew it, all of the tape was on the floor of the Nissan pickup. When my dad came back inside of the truck, I could see the look in his eyes, and it was then that I first remember the feeling of guilt. He didn’t get mad, but I knew I did something wrong. The Supertramp cassette was replaced, and then eventually the cassette player in the truck was replaced by a newer truck with a cd player. To me, it never sounded the same as it did on that old, well-loved cassette that sat out on the dashboard cooking in the sun when it wasn’t in the console. That day sparked my love for and interest of cassettes.”

Good Gold Cassette was originally planned to be a digital and cassette-only release as every track on the EP began on a Tascam Portastudio 4-track cassette recorder. “The recording process began with 4 tracks starting on the cassette recorder (usually guitars and vocals) and were then bounced to my computer afterwards and built upon from there,” explains Belo. “They were sent again to tape during the mixing stage to help glue the tracks together. The EP is far from perfect, but that’s what I love about it. It’s a simple production of some tracks that I wrote in the early winter months of 2024. It was recorded with a couple of ribbon and dynamic mics, some old guitars, a (partially broken) 70s fender champ, a weathered drum kit, some bits and bobs I had laying around the space, lots of coffee, and a lot of magnetic tape and cassettes.”

Since the first His His release in late 2020, this project has generated more than 1,000,000 streams across Spotify and Apple Music, and has been featured on CBC Music and SiriusMX’s The Verge.

Everything is recorded in the empty space of an old wood barn on his family’s farm which has been temporarily converted into a makeshift studio, where everything is recorded entirely to 1⁄4 inch tape and cassette.

His His made their live debut at POP International Music Festival 2022 in Montreal and have since showcased at SXSW 2023 + 2024.

Blending authentic songwriting with modern indie flare, Braden Lam (he/him) is forging the path to a new 21st century folk. Today, the young artist from Halifax is following up previous single, “Beautiful Neighbourhoods”, with a new trip titled “Highway Jesus”.

“I had my first psychedelic mushroom experience one summer on Prince Edward Island… It was extremely healing,” explains Lam. “I felt the earth and trees reaching out to hold me as I cried, and forgave, and just released and realised so many emotions. On the way home from that weekend our car broke down in rural Nova Scotia and we had to call a friend to come get us off the side of the highway… I wrote down ‘saved by a Highway Jesus in a pickup truck’ in my phone notes that day, a place I usually drop quick song ideas or lyrics. I grew up in a religious community and I was religious myself until my early 20s, so I was also fresh off processing that and just followed these different threads of my life until they led me to this story of someone that gets into a car crash as they try to escape their rural hometown…

“The song ends with this sermon-style rant for why I left the church; ‘No I don’t need your eternity / I got textural energy / A worldly consistency / I was made for this’. I could no longer align with those values, the judgement, the whole living for some other life thing… when I had this current one to love and be fully present in.

“Honestly, with all this division and the way the world is heading right now, my bets are on magic mushrooms saving us all before religion ever does. ‘Oh my my I need some saving / I’m just another disciple of psilocybin.’

The song arrives with a trippy music video, directed and edited by Griffin O'Toole, which continues to explore the world of surrealism that was first introduced in the video for “Beautiful Neighbourhoods”. Here Braden is transported even further from reality via a magic portal to a field of dancing mushroom people. The idea for the video came to Braden from a roadside folk-art maze attraction on the South shore of Nova Scotia that is featured in the video.

Previous single, “Beautiful Neighbourhoods”, takes you on a nostalgic and cinematic journey through the winding streets of Germany as Braden Lam, a third generation Canadian, retraces his ancestral steps in this indie-alternative single. Braden recounts a ghostly encounter he had while on tour in Europe last year, one that prompted him to visit local archives and reconnect with the places and culture his grandparents left behind to start a new life for themselves in Canada. This friendly visit bridges an understanding between the present (listener) and a romanticised version of the past (ghost) leaving both wondering - ‘Would you seek me out in the wilderness / These modern times are killing us’.

Both singles were recorded within an old church in the West end of Toronto, marking a new and refined chapter of Braden Lam’s focused storytelling through organic and timeless sounds thanks to the help of producer Eli Browning (Spencer Krug, Sister Ray), mix engineer Braden Sauder (Luna Li, The Kount), and musicians such as Matt Kelly and Johnny 99 (City and Colour), Lauren Dillen (of Burs).

Today, Busty and the Bass release new single “Lucky (Song 7)” alongside the announcement of ‘The Mannequin Tour’, a 13 date run of Canadian headline performances that begins February 7 in Kingston, ON and concludes March 8 in Victoria, BC.

With 2023's JUNO Award nominated LP Forever Never Cares, acting as a bridge between two eras of the Montreal soul-jazz ensemble, the band enters their next phase energized by the new voice of Philly-born vocalist Jordan Brown combined with founding member Alistair Blu and a new sonic palette lifting their singular sound. "Lucky (Song 7)” is an upbeat alt R&B track about "letting go of regret, picking yourself up, and reframing hardship with a more hopeful outlook." Like if Tame Impala's Kevin Parker produced an album for Earth, Wind, and Fire.

“‘Lucky (Song 7)’ is about positive reinforcement and self-affirmation,” shares the band. “The song is about letting go of regret, picking yourself up, and reframing hardship with a more hopeful outlook. It acts as words of advice towards self-help and offers a bit of witful humour for bad days: “Just another lucky day”. The track is ultimately about allowing love and positivity to overcome the cloudiness of doubt, stress, and avoidance.” Love is always on your mind and / Lucky days are hard to find.

The new song also arrives with a music video directed by Guillaume Landry.

MORE ABOUT BUSTY AND THE BASS
For the Canadian-American soul-jazz collective Busty and the Bass, collaboration has always been at the forefront of their music. Formed at McGill University in Montreal over a decade ago, the group is now scattered across four North American cities from coast to coast. Yet, with a collaborative spirit at the heart of their JUNO Award nominated third studio album, Forever Never Cares, the members have never been more connected.

Over the years, the group has collaborated with legendary artists George Clinton, Macy Gray, Earth Wind & Fire, Slum Village, and exciting new voices like Polaris Music Prize winners Cadence Weapon and Pierre Kwenders. Most recently, the group dropped a mini-album with Philadelphia poet and rapper STS. Despite such a strong history of partnerships, Forever Never Cares reshaped the band’s creative formula and redefined how they worked together a decade into their career.

After a founding member and primary songwriter left the band in 2022, the collective used the opportunity to re-approach their creative process for the first time in years. Songs would be brought to the group from individual members or smaller formations of two or three members writing together. Interestingly, more voices involved in the songwriting resulted in the group’s most refined output to date.

Two previous studio albums, Uncommon Good (2017) and Eddie (2020), saw the band experiment with genres effortlessly changing styles song to song, from soul to funk to pop.

Forever Never Cares finds the collective both broadening and distilling their influences into a unified sound that is entirely their own. This is due in large part to founding member Christopher Vincent who engineered and mixed the album. Vincent found a sonic language that would compliment all of the disparate genres being stacked atop one another.

With soul and R&B as the album’s cornerstone, the record is sprinkled with cross-genre explorations. From the indie rock-inflected uptempo singles “All The Things I Couldn’t Say To You” and “Wandering Lies,” to slow-burn ballads like “Give Me A Smile” and “Never Get Enough,” to the celebratory pop-funk of “Starstruck” and “No Angels,” a touch of 70s singer-songwriter on “Smoke and the Pine” and “Holiday Drive,” and the psychedelic jazz explorations of “Far From Here” and “No Self Control” featuring saxophonist Terrace Martin, a frequent collaborator of Kamasi Washington and Robert Glasper.
