“Maddie Jay's approach to so-called bedroom pop has a level of textural sophistication, refinement and clarity…a diaphanous landscape of dreamy tape loops, breathy word-painting tinged with artful Auto-Tune, and the occasional Aphex Twin electronic breakdown.” Exclaim!, Most Anticipated Albums of 2025
"The bubbling synth soundscape Jay creates becomes a place of solace, where she tries to shake off her concerns; thankfully she leaves plenty of space for others to not only relate, but to join in on the dance party. ...  a welcome return into the colourful mind of Jay."
CBC Music on "Eckhaus Latta"

“a hooky slice of honest indie-pop.” The Line Of Best Fit on “Undertow”

“Elements of dream-pop collide masterfully with lo-fi hip hop, and 60's pop stylings unite with surf-rock tones to name but a few.” Earmilk on “Peanut Butter Song”

“Maddie Jay is an up-and-coming artist to get excited about.” FLOOD Magazine

Today, producer/artist and multi-instrumentalist Maddie Jay releases their debut album, I Can Change Your Mind. The album was written over two years “where I was relentlessly touring on a large scale for the first time in my life,” says Jay. “My world was expanding and my self perception became tumultuous, ricocheting between extreme self confidence and rock bottom self esteem. Very basic realities of adulthood seemed bizarrely out of reach. I needed a place to express myself. I wanted to be a voice whispering into the abyss—’fuck this is really difficult’ and going forward and thriving regardless.”

Included on Exclaim’s Most Anticipated Albums of 2025, they describe the record as “a diaphanous landscape of dreamy tape loops, breathy word-painting tinged with artful Auto-Tune, and the occasional Aphex Twin electronic breakdown.”

To help celebrate the album’s release, Maddie Jay is also sharing the new single, “Stop Me If I’ve Told You This Story”, one of the first songs written for the album. “I wrote it completely alone in the desert about the euphoria of the feeling that I was finally finding my footing and finally being comfortable in my skin after a lifetime of feeling like a bit of an alien."

MORE ABOUT I CAN CHANGE YOUR MIND
“I wrote many of these songs over improvised tape loops that I recorded with my dear friends in hazy late night studio sessions,” Maddie explains. “I wanted to create a sonic bed that felt organic, nostalgic, immersive and emotionally cathartic. Working outside of solitude was a challenge for me, however I feel the end result resonates much stronger than something I would have created alone, which is probably a lesson in itself.”

“The style of songwriting I chose to pursue for this project came about while reflecting on my past projects,” Maddie continues. “I realized when listening to some of those old lyrics that I had unknowingly narrated the subtleties of an abusive relationship, described the feeling of intense codependence, and exposed my inner workings in some unflattering ways, all while thinking I was writing simple love songs.

“Each of these tracks was born in an effort to crystalize a feeling of overwhelm in my life over the last two years. They speak from within the headspace of addiction, loss of control, isolation, mania, codependence, and fear that I will never reach my full potential. By allowing myself to become an unreliable narrator, I felt able to understand the volatile internal negotiation between the person I am, and the person I aspire to be.”

CANADIAN ARENA TOUR WITH SUM 41 KICKS OFF TOMORROW

“The Toronto band Pup has long made frenetic punk-pop with neat verse-chorus-bridge structures underlying Stefan Babcock’s raucously overwrought and fully self-aware lead vocals.” - New York Times

"PUP’s fourth album, ‘The Unraveling of PUPTheBand,’ finds the quartet completely removing any of the limits left on their music, pushing things as far as possible" - The New Yorker

“Hearts on their sleeves, the group captures the rage and frustration of human fallibility with crashing drums and infectious irreverence" - NPR Music

"all the catchy, fast-paced melodies, big singalongs, and ooh-oohs and whoa-oas that you could want in a PUP record" Exclaim!

"The new songs are boisterous, catchy, and meta while also earnestly wading through the nuances of depression in a manner often reserved for “confessional” indie rock…an instant mood-booster." - Pitchfork

“transmuting life’s frustrations into unhinged visceral joy” - Stereogum (Album of the Week)

“‘The Unraveling of PUPTHEBAND’...reinforces the message that it’s okay to be yourself, no matter who you are." - Vulture

Toronto punk heroes PUP— comprised of Stefan Babcock, Nestor Chumak, Zack Mykula, and Steve Sladkowski— released their fourth album, THE UNRAVELING OF PUPTHEBAND, in 2022. The album earned PUP universal acclaim, countless Top 10 Billboard chart positions including #1 Heatseekers, Top New Artists Albums and Alternative New Artist Albums, and a slew of sold-out shows across the globe. They’re keeping it going with an arena tour with Sum 41 that kicks off tomorrow night, so to celebrate they return today with a new single. The explosive, John Congleton-produced track “Paranoid” is out now, and is PUP’s first new release in two years.

Babcock says of the new single: “My favourite part of this song is the breakdown 1:45 in. It's the heaviest moment in the song, Zack and Steve are going so hard, I'm yelling about all this sad stuff that's going on with me, and Nestor is just playing the melody from ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ on the bass. It cracks me up every time I hear it. So fucking funny. It's a very PUP moment."

“Paranoid” is accompanied by an ingenious music video by long-time PUP collaborator Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux, who said: “What started out as a way to keep the bruising and heartbreaking lyrics to ‘Paranoid’ front and center turned into a little love letter for rock band merchandise and the unsung heroes who run the merch table. Special thanks to co-director Clem Hoeney and all the real PUP fans who came out and went so hard for a hundred takes!”

Can’t wait that long? Well, do we have a solution for you! Introducing MORE BAD STUFF - A PUPTHEBAND Substack. A reincarnation of the band’s zine series PUPTHEZINE, this substack will be an ongoing digital version or, as they like to call it, “PUPTHEBAND’S brand new digital hellscape.” They will use it to post unreleased songs, discuss writing process, play-through tracks, comics, old photos, live recordings, tour stories and more. The first two posts, featuring the original 4-song EP of pre-PUP band Topanga and some Built To Spill covers by Stefan, are out now.

Acclaimed multi-JUNO Award winning singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Rose Cousins’ new album, Conditions of Love - Vol 1, will arrive March 14, 2025.

Today Rose reveals the music video for new single “K’s Waltz”. An ode to her late friend and colleague, Koady Chaisson, Rose marvels at the resilience of the human spirit and the limitless capacity of a giving heart to adapt in the face of hardship. There is grace in the everyday act of survival.

“The loss has been gut-wrenching,” shares Rose. “It’s hard to process and harder to accept that he’s gone. It’s also incredible to feel his presence still having a profound influence on the world he made. In the last month of his life, he was cold dipping both for his own health and to raise money for the Unison Fund, which supports Canadian music industry folks in times of hardship. He was and is a light."

An extremely talented banjo player, step dancer and all-round colourful human, Koady was a founding member of PEI’s The East Pointers (Tim Chaisson & Jake Charon).

MORE ABOUT CONDITIONS OF LOVE - VOL 1
On her new album, Rose holds her listeners’ hands as she guides them on a journey through the "conditions of love." Ever the emotional explorer, the Nova-Scotia-based artist seeks truth, in all its imperfection, in the depths of humans’ most complicated of emotions: love. The journey results in a striking clarity, and it’s the gift of that clarity that brings on surprising tears.

Rose shares, “Love feels great and makes us ridiculous. It's tiring and intense, joyful and devastating. Falling in love, being in love and staying in love are all such different things. Being human is emotionally complicated enough without attempting to relate to another who is just as complex, and in the most vulnerable of arenas: romance. Love is wondrous and absurd (and very hard). Humour helps.”

Co-produced with trusted friend and longtime bandmate Joshua Van Tassel, Conditions of Love - Vol. 1 sees Rose return to her first love, the piano. “Piano is where I feel the most connected. It’s the best partner in expressing the emotion I’m mining,” she shares. She first introduced the upcoming body of work with the gorgeous, piano-driven ballad “Forget Me Not,” followed by the slow-burning, nostalgic “Borrowed Light,” and the uplifting, “I Believe in Love (and it’s very hard),” which Rose has called the cornerstone of the upcoming album.

Rose Cousins’ songwriting plumbs the depths of the human condition. Her work has garnered her two JUNO Awards (2013’s We Have Made a Spark & 2021’s Bravado), two Canadian Folk Music Awards, eleven East Coast Music Awards and one Grammy Award nomination (2018’s Natural Conclusion), along with praise from the likes of the CBC, No Depression, LA Times, Associated Press, Billboard, Folk Alley, and NPR, who raved “Cousins’ disarmingly fluid vocal tone has the ability to convey the most internalized feelings without an ounce of fuss.” Over the years, she has shared stages with Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Jann Arden, Kathleen Edwards, Joe Henry and Anais Mitchell, and her music has fittingly underscored scenes from notable TV shows including Grey’s Anatomy, Fire Country, Batwoman and Heartland.
