Recently, multidisciplinary artist Maya Cook announced her debut album salt, set for release March 21 via Aakuluk Music. Today she shares the album’s second single, “Silarjuaq”, a song Maya wrote “for a friend in Igloolik who was going through a hard time,” she says. “It’s a song about how despite all the bad things that happen, and the harmful things we do to others and ourselves, the world is an incredibly beautiful place-because we are alive and get to exist in it together. Silarjuaq, meaning ‘the universe’ or ‘the world’ in Inuktitut, is a declaration of that, an ode to the heartbreaking beauty of being in this world."

MORE ABOUT MAYA COOK + salt
Maya Cook’s journey into music was paved by her path as a multidisciplinary artist. As a circus performer with Artcirq, the renowned performing arts collective in Igloolik, Nunavut, Maya has spent years expressing herself with dynamic acrobatics and sharply crafted storytelling. Her debut album salt, recorded at Aakuluk Music Studios in Iqaluit, Nunavut, is a testament to her artistry in a different medium—one that swings between the soulful melodies of soft jazz and the infectious energy of folk rock.

Raised in the Gulf Islands of the Salish Sea, Maya hails from Mennonite-Anglo-Celtic ancestry and lives in both Vancouver, BC and Igloolik, Nunavut. Maya’s artist identity is shaped by these worlds, their influence in her music both spontaneous and transformative. “It sometimes feels like I’m two separate people” she says. “I have these strong ties to the Salish Sea where I grew up, and my family and friends who hold me there, as well as to the land and community in Igloolik. Sometimes that feels like it’s splitting me in half, but really, it’s through living in Igloolik that I came to recognize and appreciate the strength of connection I have to where I’m from. Creating art, both circus and music, has been a profound way of exploring how all of my pieces are woven together, within myself and in my relationships with the land and people around me”.

salt brings together Maya’s reflective nature and her curious spirit, offering listeners a vivid sonic landscape inspired by a life in coastal BC and steeped in the Arctic’s contrasts—its beauty and challenges, warmth and cold. The album’s eight tracks each reveal a piece of her world and her heart. Themes of healing, introspection, connection, and community, run through the record. Songs like ”Metal In My Bones” channel the quiet contemplation of rainy Vancouver nights, while tracks like ”Silarjuaq” pulse with raw energy and defiance, fueled by the beauty and vibrance of the tundra. Maya’s voice, rich and emotive, soft and silky, guides listeners through her world, blending seamlessly with instrumentation that mirrors the rhythm of life in the North.

For Maya, salt is more than an album; it’s an exploration of the balance in-between: in-between north and south, hurt and healing, strength and softness… it’s the spaces between our bodies and where sky and ocean meet. “salt is an album about that which connects us to our bodies, to the ocean, and to one another. Writing these songs have been my way of sitting with and feeling how hard, but also how incredibly beautiful, this world is.” she reflects. With this debut, Maya proves she is an emerging voice in the Nunavut music scene.

salt was produced by Jace Lasek, the renowned producer behind acclaimed albums by Aasiva, Terry Uyarak, and The Jerry Cans. Lasek’s expertise shines through, seamlessly blending Maya’s unique voice and artistic vision with rich, atmospheric production. His ability to bring out the depth and texture in northern artists’ music makes salt a stunning addition to the legacy of projects he’s helped shape, further amplifying the soundscape of the Arctic.

Recorded under the crisp fall skies in Iqaluit, salt is a love letter to the North, to the Salish Sea, and to all the water in-between that connects them. It is an invitation to share in Maya’s vision of resilience and beauty, to close your eyes, and to feel the rhythm of the tides under your skin.

This Friday, CJ Wiley will release their debut LP, So Brand New via Tiny Kingdom. To help celebrate the album, Wiley is sharing the new single “Get Paid”, co-written with Dave Monks of Tokyo Police Club. “Get Paid” takes “a tongue-in-cheek look at how expensive it is to be alive, reflecting my frustration with the relentless grind of life,” says Wiley. “It captures the feeling of being stuck in a society we’re sick of, enduring it for the sake of our loved ones, while knowing full well that we all deserve something much more meaningful.”

The single arrives with a video from Doran Brooks in which CJ Wiley delivers a cheeky yet grim reminder that we're all born just to work. The video is “a playful take on the relentless grind we’re all stuck in,” explains Wiley. “With a nod to Thelma & Louise, it shows how we’re working our entire lives until we die.”

MORE ABOUT SO BRAND NEW
A groundswell of gripping slacker rock, non-binary singer-songwriter CJ Wiley doesn’t waste any time. Twirling guitars, a steady drum beat, crunchy bass; ballads twanged slightly country, anthems skewed slightly grunge; a message of love and anger, healing and rancour; all of which are found on their debut LP, So Brand New.

Produced by Boy Golden, So Brand New is a journey through the ever-shifting landscapes of identity and self-acceptance, embracing change and finding comfort in the continuous evolution of who we are. The album reflects on the feeling of having lived multiple lives within a single lifetime and confronts the irresistible urge to reinvent and start again. It delves into themes of grief, nostalgia, queer love, struggles with drug addiction, and the rejection of gender performance, while also addressing the absurdity of how expensive it is just to be alive these days. At its core, it captures the idea that no one is ever just one thing; we are all fluid, constantly adapting through the various stages of our lives.

Growing Out My Hair" marks "a pivotal moment in embracing my non-binary identity and breaking away from societal expectations of androgyny," says Wiley. "In "People Please," I challenge the music industry’s ideals of who I should be and what will make me successful, reflecting on my attempts to fit that mold before realizing I’d rather create art that truly represents me. Meanwhile, "Adelaide" is a heartfelt tribute to chosen family and the conscious choice to love and grow together instead of growing apart. The title track, "So Brand New," captures the seductive essence of finding ourselves within others, discovering parts of our identity through alluring new perspectives.”

So Brand New blends deeply emotional and uplifting tracks with a slacker rock vibe, seamlessly marrying introspective singer-songwriter elements with a polished, radio-friendly sound. Featuring ballads with a hint of country twang and anthems that skew slightly grunge, it creates a unique experience characterized by rich, textured arrangements and candid lyricism. This collection serves as a musical reflection on identity and the courage it takes to let go of who others think we should be, embracing the full range of who we’re becoming. The result is a set of songs that feel both intimately personal and universally relatable, celebrating the transformative journey of self-discovery and the acceptance of our ever-changing selves.

MORE ABOUT CJ WILEY
Performing alongside artists like Tokyo Police Club, Shannon and the Clams, or Haley Blais, and already a mainstay in the city’s queer music scene as the host of the Big Gay Night concert series, Wiley introduces themselves in songs as categorical and entrancing as the sold-out shows they organize. Aflame in a stirring spectrum of soulful Sheryl Crow Americana and the electric grumblings of Garbage or Hole, sometimes in the space of a single song, Wiley’s distinct voice carries their project with the wit, candour, and excitement of an artist with a striking perspective and a heart that demands to be heard.

Today, immeasurably talented experimental artist Saya Gray releases her highly-anticipated debut album SAYA via Marian Murata (Canada). The project was heralded in by previous singles “SHELL ( OF A MAN )”, “H.B.W”, and “LIE DOWN..”, and serves as a flawless 10-track introduction.

Since her first project release, the critically-acclaimed 19 MASTERS, only a couple years ago, Saya Gray has become globally defined by the undefinable – an artist whose work is limitless, beguiling, intimate, exhilarating and truly unlike any other musician releasing songs right now.  It’s easy to call something “one of one;” it’s harder to live it, breathe it, encapsulate it, and share it with the world:  Saya Gray embodies that rarified space and invites everyone in.

WATCH / SHARE “H.B.W” HERE

Somewhat of a musical nomad, Saya bounds from genre to genre with a natural elegance, blurring the lines between them so seamlessly you don’t think twice. “SHELL ( OF A MAN )” draws from Country music, a sound that makes an appearance for the first time in Gray’s output, opening with a twang fueled guitar riff and vengeful lyrics, but is flipped on its head with sweet and airy vocals collaged a few times over. The resulting track is something that feels like a familiar breakup anthem, with resonant lyrics like “I’m still hung up on cobwebs,” but has what can only be characterized as a disjointed, uniquely-Saya melody that sets it apart from the rest.

Ahead of the release, Saya chatted with Exclaim! about the new album (and more) and the project was championed by outlets like NPR All Songs Considered in their list of 2025's most-anticipated albums, Pitchfork’s 32 Most Anticipated Albums of 2025, Rolling Stone’s Pop Acts We’re Most Excited About This Year, Alternative Press’ 25 Most Exciting Artists to Watch, Stereogum’s Artists to Watch, and HITS New & Developing Q1. Last year The New York Times also placed “AA Bouquet for Your 180 Face” (from her EP QWERTY II) at #22 on their ‘Best Songs of 2024’ roundup.

SAYA finally came after the dissolution of a troubled romantic entanglement; Gray booked a flight to Japan in the fall of 2023. And like a feel-good movie protagonist, Gray detangled herself from the outstanding psychic ties by journeying solo on a cross-country road trip. Moved by the vastness of albums by the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, as well as her Canadian folk forebear, Joni Mitchell, Gray kept an acoustic guitar in the passenger’s seat, just in case inspiration would strike. In recording SAYA, Gray sanded and fine tuned the rough edges of records past into more cohesive works of melodic folk songcraft.

Saya follows a pair of critically-acclaimed EPs QWERTY and QWERTY II. Born out of the large periods of 2023 she spent in studious isolation and her healthy fear of the ever encroaching digital world, the 14 tracks perfectly demonstrate her stunningly detailed compositions. She first introduced herself to the world as a solo artist in 2022 with 19 MASTERS. Recorded in large part through her iPhone’s Voice Notes app, her dissonant electro-rock sketches aptly met the moment of global post-pandemic disarray. It was dubbed one of the best albums of the year by TIME and her work has generally received accolades from The New York Times, Pitchfork, NPR, and more. She also began unveiling her own kaleidoscopic inventions to such major festivals as the Montreal Jazz Fest, Pitchfork Music’s Paris festival, and Primavera Sound in Spain.

Gray was born in Toronto, Canada, to a Japanese mother and Scottish-Canadian father. She first got her start playing in a house band at a Jamaican Pentecostal church; by 16, she was recruited for gigs at open mics, nightclubs and jazz festivals alongside adults. Soon, Gray began entertaining bigger offers to tour internationally as a bass player for Grammy-winning artists before embarking on a solo career.
