"If a solar storm was a song, it would be 'Maelstrom',” says experimental electronic duo CHXMERAS of their new single, the latest from their upcoming EP, Second Sight. “This one feels electromagnetic and irradiated. It flashes out of some fire-filled core and accelerates the particles around it. When we first started working on the track, it felt like a straight up, ink-black, late night Berlin techno banger. But as we dug in, the track started to glitch, fray, and fall apart -- and we leaned into that direction. ‘Maelstrom’ evolved into its fragmented form and now it feels furious. You can almost hear shards and spikes flying off from it the whole way through, like it could spark a fire everywhere it touches."

MORE ABOUT CHXMERAS
CHXMERAS are a transatlantic collaboration between UK/Canadian musician Paul Finlay from the North East of England and Vancouver-based nêhiyaw/Denesuline musician Jarrett Martineau from Treaty 6 territory. Together, they weave immersive soundscape with angular dub, experimental techno, mutating noise, and bit-crushed beats into a genre-blending, otherworldly experience.

Out June 13, their new EP, Second Sight is about “standing face-to-face with the wild, furious, anything goes, free-for-all, freefall present moment that we’re all living through,” says CHXMERAS. “When we set out to make this record, we didn’t know where we would end up, but we knew that we wanted it to sound and feel like the chaos and anxieties that are swirling all around us.”

CHXMERAS released their debut album, Terminal City, in 2024 on Virtua94 Records. Hailed by RANGE Magazine as “a multilayered cinematic masterpiece", the album charts a sonic passage through the echoes and ruins of late-stage capitalism, environmental degradation, and urban decay. Using modular synths, drum machines, live efx, field recordings, film samples and live improvisation, CHXMERAS take listeners into a hallucinatory landscape where fractal paths, lost futures, and the disorienting present collide.

Following a period of intense creative exploration across East Africa, JUNO Award nominated collective Moonshine releases SMS for Location, Vol. 6—an album that transcends musical and cultural boundaries. The mixtape is available everywhere today via Moonshine/ADA Warner.

SMS For Location, Vol. 6 is the collective’s most ambitious release to date. The 20-track mixtape weaves together the raw pulse of Batida, Rumba, Singeli, Amapiano, Hip-Hop, and R&B, fusing ancestral rhythms with forward-thinking electronic production. The result is a vibrant and borderless soundscape rooted in the collective's diasporic vision of global club culture.

Collaborators include DJ Lag, Pierre Kwenders, UNIIQU3, Branko, Vanyfox, Black Rave Culture, and many more. More than a mixtape, SMS For Location, Vol. 6 is a multidimensional project that captures the essence of Moonshine's artistic ethos—community-driven, exploratory, and radically inclusive. The long-awaited mixtape weaves together a sonic map that spans from South to East Africa, with each track capturing Moonshine's unique way of blending global sounds into a cohesive energy that connects dance floors around the world.

Moonshine are also releasing Zaïre Space Program Act II, directed by Hervé “ Coltan” Kalongo and co-directed by Nizar Saleh Mohamed, Pierre Kwenders and Felix Brochier. The film follows Moonshine core members Pierre Kwenders and Hervé Kalongo as they travel to Kinshasa with their collective and encounter Jean-Patrice Keka, an independent Congolese aerospace engineer leading a self-funded space program. What unfolds is a poetic and genre-bending reflection on pan-African creativity, utopia, and the role of science and art in shaping new futures. Set at the crossroads of documentary, road movie, and speculative fiction, Zaïre Space Program Act II features members of the Moonshine collective including San Farafina, Akantu and MC RedBul, and immerses viewers in Kinshasa’s buzzing alternative scene. From the very beginning, Moonshine has built a reputation in the electronic music scene through a bold visual identity that authentically reflects the collective’s story and sonic signature.

Today, Toronto songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Abigail Lapell releases More Songs About Love, the extended companion to her acclaimed 2025 JUNO Award Nominated album Anniversary. In celebration, Lapell is sharing the acoustic version of “Count On Me”. A love song about love songs, this stripped-down rendition goes back to basics with sparse, haunting acoustic guitar and harmonies from Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker.

MORE ABOUT ABIGAIL LAPELL AND ANNIVERSARY & MORE SONGS ABOUT LOVE

An evocative collection of original love songs, Anniversary was produced with Great Lake Swimmers’ Tony Dekker and recorded at 200-year-old St Mark’s Church in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Dekker helped shape the sessions’ spooky, resonant sound and also lent his voice to a couple of spellbinding duets.

Balancing upbeat earworms with elegiac ballads, More Songs About Love adds eight new stripped-down tracks to the collection, including delicate acoustic versions of Anniversary’s standout tracks; a captivating French translation of crowd favourite “Rattlesnake”; and Lapell’s unique take on a handful of beloved classics, including her impassioned version of “Feels Like We Always Go Backwards” by Tame Impala.

On Anniversary, Abigail Lapell interrogates the romantic ideal of growing old together. ‘Anniversary’ literally means ‘returning yearly’, and the album’s 11 songs track the revolving days, seasons, and years to celebrate and complicate the notion of eternal love. Across the project, Lapell drew inspiration from a series of personal milestones, including turning 40, along with the fifteenth anniversary of her father’s death – and, more recently, several weddings and births in her family. She offers a 40-something vision of love, haunted by the ghosts of departed loved ones, past relationships or even the spectre of faded youth.

Anniversary was fittingly recorded in a historic 200-year-old church adjoining a cemetery, complementing the project’s resonant and hauntingly intimate theme. Lapell tapped Tony Dekker to co-produce the album, and the two assembled a stellar cast of musicians to round out Lapell’s vocals, piano, harmonica and fingerstyle electric guitar. The ensemble’s sensitive, orchestral country-jazz arrangements reveal the depth of Lapell’s musical palette – making use of the church’s in-house piano, harpsichord and several antique organs.

Across the album, Lapell’s deft lyrics jostle with love song tropes, grappling with love’s finitude and the irony of how codependency and longing are revered in popular music. “I wanted to explore some of the contradictions within the pop culture notion of love,” Lapell says. “These dichotomies of light and dark, love and loss, fleeting and eternal – even in the traditional wedding vows, ‘sickness and health, richer or poorer.’” Ultimately, while deconstructing the myths of romantic love, Anniversary emerges as an earnest celebration of commitment – acknowledging its tragedy and hope, and its power to haunt and console at the same time.

Anniversary comes on the heels of Abigail Lapell’s critically acclaimed 2022 album Stolen Time, and Lullabies, released in November of 2023. Over the course of her musical journey, Lapell has now garnered four Canadian Folk Music Awards, hit number one on Canadian folk radio and reached a staggering 40 million+ streams on Spotify alone.  Abigail was the most nominated artist at the 2025 Canadian Folk Music Awards with 4 nominations: Contemporary Album of the Year and Solo Artist of the Year for Anniversary, Traditional Singer of the Year - for Lullabies, taking home the award for 2025 Children's Album of the Year for Lullabies
