“Thunder Queens — the shit-kicking trio of Violet Bruneel, Lola Hayman and Clara Magnan — make music for staying alive. Their garage-adjacent tunes fold in elements of deep purple doom, scrappy punk and classic pop melodies, making debut album Strike One a thrillingly confident introductory statement." - Exclaim!

“This emerging garage punk trio might still be in high school but they’re ready to affect change through their music and message.” RANGE Magazine

“Strike One, is a rocking good time of punk, grunge, 70s metal, and riot grrrl. …  an impressive debut album” SPILL Magazine

Thunder Queens have nailed their songwriting formula down to a science. Lola Hayman (drums, vocals), Violet Bruneel (guitar, vocals), and Clara Magnan (bass, vocals) build the bones of shapeshifting riffs, dream up tones and harmonies, and weave stories into their songs. Similar to scoring a film, they visualize a cinematic treatment aligned around places they can see and words they can’t shake.

Today, they share the new single “Birds On A Wire”, a high energy, pop punk-inspired anthem about breaking free from expectations. “We wrote this song about things a lot of people can relate to, like feeling underestimated, boxed in, and frustrated, and about the rush that comes with breaking free,” the band says. “Our favourite line is ‘blew out the candles of doubt for her trail full of fire’ because it’s about that turning point where you start moving forward.”

MORE ABOUT THUNDER QUEENS
The band are unafraid to be experimental and shapeshift, conjuring the playful vitality of Sheer Mag, ground shaking range of Black Sabbath, and the urgency of The Runaways. Their raw energy and poignant lyricism show a band that’s played together for over half a decade while still being on the cusp of earning a driver’s license. On their debut LP, Strike One, each riff and lyric paint a vivid picture of a world they’re still discovering, from the gauzy bliss of a sun-drenched road trip to the urgency of our fractured political landscape. Thunder Queens fearlessly explore a spectrum of emotions and themes with the unmatched curiosity of youth and solidarity that comes from nurturing a foundation of sisterhood.

Lola Hayman, Violet Bruneel, and Clara Magnan became friends while searching for loonies under the pinball machines at Call The Office. In between eating ice cream cones and wreaking havoc on their skateboards, they formed Thunder Queens.

Whether it’s sharing the Massey Hall stage with members of The Beaches during the 2024 Polaris Music Prize Gala or opening for Billy Talent at the Kee To Bala, their writing, performances, and tenacity have earned them coveted spots alongside acclaimed Canadian acts like Metz, Sloan, The Dirty Nil, OMIBIIGIZI, and Daniel Romano, and to perform at Pop Montreal, Up Here Festival, and Bitchfest.

Strike One is the natural follow-up to their 2020 self-titled EP (Yeah Right! Records), expressing the hopes, fears, and joys, while also making razor-sharp observations on our culture. As they gaze at their surroundings, Thunder Queens remain clear-headed about the future, while continuing to push boundaries and stake their claim in the Industry.

“CJ Wiley keeps things simple in order to get complex. Warm guitars, steady drums and lively bass — sometimes that's all you need to start a fire. Wiley's Boy Golden-produced debut lights all kinds of fires, an ever-shifting document of change and renewal” Exclaim!

Songs about friendship are criminally underrated. “You still call me up when my heart is burning / To calm me down with a midnight sermon,” Toronto alt-country singer CJ Wiley sings on “Adelaide,” a remarkable song about chosen family, and “choosing to love and grow together instead of growing apart. Wiley’s debut album, “So Brand Now,” is filled with striking songs about love, identity and acceptance” The Toronto Star

Today, Toronto slack rocker CJ Wiley is sharing the new video for “Growing Out My Hair” from their recently released debut album, So Brand New. Released today in conjunction with International Non-Binary People’s Day, “Growing Out My Hair” represents “the moment I decided I didn’t owe anyone androgyny to be valid as a non-binary person,” says Wiley. “It’s about rejecting gender performance and expectations, and finally embracing my identity with a kind of self-love and certainty I never thought I’d have. This song is a love letter to anyone who needs it—a reminder that trans and non-binary people deserve joy, space, and representation. This is my non-binary anthem.”

MORE ABOUT SO BRAND NEW
A groundswell of gripping slacker rock, non-binary singer-songwriter CJ Wiley doesn’t waste any time. Twirling guitars, a steady drum beat, crunchy bass; ballads twanged slightly country, anthems skewed slightly grunge; a message of love and anger, healing and rancour; all of which are found on their debut LP, So Brand New.

Produced by Boy Golden, So Brand New is a journey through the ever-shifting landscapes of identity and self-acceptance. This album explores embracing change and finding comfort in the continuous evolution of who we are. It delves into themes of grief, nostalgia, queer love, struggles with drug addiction, and the rejection of gender performance, while also addressing the absurdity of how expensive it is just to be alive these days. At its core, the album reflects the idea that no one is ever just one thing; we are all fluid, constantly adapting through the various stages of our lives.

Growing Out My Hair" marks "a pivotal moment in embracing my non-binary identity and breaking away from societal expectations of androgyny," says Wiley. "In "People Please," I challenge the music industry’s ideals of who I should be and what will make me successful, reflecting on my attempts to fit that mold before realizing I’d rather create art that truly represents me. Meanwhile, "Adelaide" is a heartfelt tribute to chosen family and the conscious choice to love and grow together instead of growing apart. The title track, "So Brand New," captures the seductive essence of finding ourselves within others, discovering parts of our identity through alluring new perspectives.”

MORE ABOUT CJ WILEY
Performing alongside artists like Tokyo Police Club, Shannon and the Clams, or Haley Blais, and already a mainstay in the city’s queer music scene as the host of the Big Gay Night concert series, Wiley introduces themselves in songs as categorical and entrancing as the sold-out shows they organize. Aflame in a stirring spectrum of soulful Sheryl Crow Americana and the electric grumblings of Garbage or Hole, sometimes in the space of a single song, Wiley’s distinct voice carries their project with the wit, candour, and excitement of an artist with a striking perspective and a heart that demands to be heard.

Today, trailblazing electronic pop duo Purity Ring announce their highly-anticipated self-titled LP due out on September 26, 2025 via the fellowship. Their new single, “place of my own” serves as a fresh preview to the album.

“place of my own”, is a euphoric and pulsating 2025 trance anthem that takes us out of place and time. The words ‘all i want is a place of my own / some way to be alone’ serve as a spell over the blissful synth melodies that have become a signature of Purity Ring’s sound. The track takes the listener to a series of disappearing places: ‘come find me where the ocean’s gleaming off the sky / come find me where the cliffside calls / we’re out of time’. Yearning for a sense of belonging amid places that are slowly fading out of view on a burning planet. This new single brings us the glimmering satisfaction we’ve come to expect from this duo, yet it lingers with the melancholy feeling of slipping away.

“This is one of those songs that came into being with ease and immediacy. We were in a hazy forest in the mountains, and the beat felt just like the cloud we were in. It was succinct and ready for the type of lyrics that imbued places we dream of, places we wish we could exist in, places we see everyday but are just out of reach. In the end, this song is meant as a sort of spell in the way that maybe we can reach these places if we watch our steps carefully, if we take the time to build them for ourselves.”

Purity Ring’s self-titled fourth album marks the beginning of a bold new chapter as the band’s most immersive release to date. Long known for their fusion of body horror imagery and ethereal electronics, the duo now shift their focus from the physical to the fantastical, crafting a concept album that serves as the soundtrack to an imagined RPG. Inspired by games like Nier Automata and Final Fantasy X, the record tells the story of two hapless characters — embodiments of mj and Corin — on a journey to build a kinder world amid the ruins of a broken one. But this is no escapist fantasy: it is the first step of forbidden dreaming, of imagining a place where the vulnerable are heeded, where grief is spoken aloud and held collectively, where family is a verb rather than a noun, where hope and home can bloom together.

The band also announces a 23-date headline tour beginning this October. Tickets available for purchase on Thursday, July 17 at 10:00 AM local via Seated HERE.

“We are so excited to be back on tour after a few years away. Each album gives us a chance to build a unique and immersive visual show, and this time we’re working on what might be our most ambitious stage design yet. We can’t wait to bring the world of this album to life and share it with everyone”

MORE ABOUT PURITY RING
Purity Ring released their first three albums on the legendary label 4AD, beginning with Shrines, which earned Pitchfork’s Best New Music honors and was shortlisted for the Polaris Music Prize. Their breakout track “Fineshrine” is certified gold in the US, and “Grandloves” was sampled by Playboi Carti on his Die Lit track “Fell In Love”. In recent years, they remixed “Knife Prty” as the lead single for the 20th anniversary reissue of Deftones’ classic album White Pony and collaborated with industrial pop duo Black Dresses on the track “Shines”.

Since emerging in the early 2010s, Corin and mj have made a lasting impact on the electronic pop landscape, building a world all their own with immersive self-produced albums and designing groundbreaking visual live show experiences. Their next era of self-released music promises to step fully into a vision they’ve been circling for years - one that feels vast, unrestrained, and true to who they’ve become.
