ARIEL POSEN RETURNS WITH NEW SINGLE /  VIDEO, “FUTURE PRESENT TENSE”

For Ariel Posen, songwriting and guitar playing have always gone hand-in-hand. He's spent a decade building a bridge between those two worlds, balancing his work as a hotshot instrumentalist — including collaborations with everyone from John Mayer to Tom Jones — with solo albums rooted in melody and autobiographical storytelling. The result is a career that's every bit as diverse as his music. With performances at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, his own Fender Stratocaster Signature Model, and a powerful voice that matches his fretwork, Posen explores uncharted territory, blurring the lines between genre and generation along the way.

Today, he’s sharing the new single “Future Present Tense”, a song that shows a new side of Ariel’s sound while still staying true to what his fans already know and love. “Future Present Tense” is “about a timeless and transformative love that lives in the moment but feels infinite,” says Posen. “It explores the electric, overwhelming pull of a deep connection, the kind that blurs time. The phrase ‘Future Present Tense’ captures a love so powerful it collapses past and future into the now. There's desire, surrender, and a sense of spiritual gravity to the relationship. It’s about being taken somewhere emotionally uncharted, again and again.”

MORE ABOUT ARIEL POSEN
Raised by musical parents in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Posen played guitar for hometown friends The Bros. Landreth — and won a JUNO Award for the band's first release, Let It Lie — before launching his solo career in 2019. Multiple solo records followed, showcasing an ever-evolving mix of rock & roll, R&B, Americana, and electrified roots music. Some albums were filled with tightly-constructed, vocally-driven songs. Others were collections of improvised guitar instrumentals. Together, they highlight a musician who continues to push ahead, chasing down new sounds while still honouring his roots.

LARKK, THE PROJECT OF DANIELLE MCTAGGART (DEAR ROUGE), SHARES DEBUT SINGLE, “CAVERNS”

Danielle McTaggart is an artist in transformation. Best known as the powerhouse voice behind the JUNO Award-winning duo Dear Rouge, she has spent years captivating audiences with electrifying performances and chart-topping hits. Now, Danielle McTaggart steps forward as Larkk — a transformation that embraces intimacy and introspection, trading the high-energy pulse of indie rock for raw, poetic vulnerability.

Today, Larkk shares the debut single, “Caverns”, a song “about the deep and sacred journey I took when I suddenly and unexpectedly experienced deep grief like I had never known,” says Danielle, who now embodies her new artistic identity as Larkk. “The memories of my life, the unexplored ideas and questions I had long ignored, began to awaken — as I went down into the caverns of my heart. I heard a voice in my innermost spirit, ‘When you can’t go around, you must go down.’ And I knew I could not go around. So down I went. I walked slow, afraid and shaking, through the tunnels of my heart. Down, into the places I’d forgotten or wished I could forget. And yet, to my utter surprise, there was such treasure there. Rare and precious jewels being formed in the heat of my heart's pain. And I knew, somehow I was not alone.”

MORE ABOUT LARKK
Larkk is Danielle McTaggart in a new form, born from her desire for deeper artistic exploration. After years of touring with acclaimed acts like Metric, Phantogram, and The Beaches, she felt a pull to connect on a more personal level — with herself and with listeners.

For Larkk, this music exists in the space between the past and the future - an evolution of both sound and spirit. It’s more than a new chapter; it’s the creation of an entirely new language of storytelling. Larkk weaves together music, movement, painting, poetry, and expansive artistic expression — each element intertwining to capture the beauty and ache of being human. It’s a deeply immersive world where emotion drives form, and vulnerability becomes a powerful source of connection.

Today, Jolie Laide releases a series of B-sides and curiosities entitled In The Low Light EP, following up their acclaimed early 2025 album Creatures. The songs arrive after a summer of touring some of Canada’s largest festivals, including Calgary, Winnipeg, and Canmore folk fests, as well as Hillside in Guelph, and Ottawa Bluesfest. These tracks were recorded during the Creatures sessions on Vancouver Island with producer Colin Stewart (Dan Mangan, The New Pornographers). The b-sides include two new original Jolie Laide songs and a rousing cover of Carl Perkins’ “Honey Don’t” which showcases the powerful duet voices of Nina Nastasia and Clinton St. John.

“Honey Don't” was a “fun exercise to take a song that would seem like an unlikely pick in its original form and turn it into a Jolie Laide song,” the band says. “It surprised us as a band in how defined our sound came across as uniquely Jolie Laide.”

EP title track, “In the Low Light” details “when the body will not wait for the ‘proper’ setting,” the band explains, while “Ranchlands Hum” highlights the “unexplained hum in a small suburb in Calgary that residents have come to accept. Either you go on with your day and let it drift out of focus, or you get caught in the distraction that eventually drags you to madness. ‘The maniacs are running down the hall…’ We are the victims of our own brains, and it takes great effort to let the hum drift out of focus for a moment of quiet.”

MORE ABOUT JOLIE LAIDE
Comprised of revered American indie singer-songwriter Nina Nastasia (who has amassed a stunning and critically acclaimed discography of unique, darkly melodic albums), and Jeff MacLeod, Clinton St. John, and Morgan Greenwood (also of the band Florida BC), Jolie Laide planted its roots some two decades ago through a mutual connection. The lion's share of Nastasia's solo albums were masterfully recorded by the late, great Steve Albini, and in the mid-00s, MacLeod and St. John's old band The Cape May had just finished recording their album Glass Mountain Roads with the veteran engineer. Nina was next in line for the studio. A night of commiserating in the studio led to Albini’s suggestion that The Cape May become Nastasia’s touring band for her upcoming North American and European tours and this pairing turned into a fruitful collaboration and a longstanding friendship.

Looking back on the trajectory from Jolie Laide's self-titled debut to the brand new Creatures, it's anyone's guess where this group will go next. For fans of Nina Nastasia or the Florida BC band family, there's plenty of both of those things, but there's also a whole new, unified thing; with Creatures they're presenting it in widescreen.

“Creatures is a phenomenal record, both ambitious and cohesive despite the many cooks in the kitchen. All songs are duets, with Nastasia and St. John doing call-and-response or harmonizing on dark, mesmerizing numbers.” – Calgary Herald

“Creatures is bolder, weirder, and more beautiful: a swirling blend of murder ballads, spaghetti western gloom, post-punk urgency, and melancholic electronic textures.” – Range Magazine
