SUMMERSETS PUNCH THEIR “MILLION DOLLAR TICKET”

summersets, the duo of Kalle Mattson and his childhood friend and long-time bandmate Andrew Sowka, return with their new single “Million Dollar Ticket”. The new track follows in the footsteps of their previous single “If You Were A Stranger”, which rose up the CBC Music Top 20 earlier this year. The idea for “Million Dollar Ticket” came to Mattson after “driving past a convenience store sign in Sault Ste. Marie last summer that said ‘million dollar ticket sold here, beer’ (it’s also on the single cover). The sign struck me as incredibly funny, sad, and hopeful all at once, and this idea of playing the lottery as your retirement plan or only way to move ahead came to me. I ended up writing the song about a couple who are getting passed by, born in the wrong generation, but still have each other.”

MORE ABOUT SUMMERSETS
Previous single “Move Back Home” is about “the housing crisis in Canada, and specifically how our generation (millennials) have had to settle for a life that looks markedly different from the ones our parents led,” says Mattson. “The characters in the song are a composite of so many of our friends in their early 30s who are moving back to our hometown (Sault Ste. Marie, ON), after living in larger cities, because “moving back home” is their only real option of ever owning a home or starting a family. I’ve made peace that I will probably never own a home, what was an option for previous generations is not one for me, but I wanted to put that reality into a song where the characters are ‘settling’ and ‘settling down’, both for each other and in the larger context of their lives.”

On “If You Were A Stranger”, Mattson says “Since 2021 I’ve taught songwriting in the music department at Carleton University. Teaching at any level was certainly not something I ever thought I would do, but in teaching songwriting, it’s opened up a lot more areas in my own writing (what’s the saying ‘the best way to learn is to teach’? I think they also say ‘those that can’t do, teach’ but whatever). Every songwriter I know admires John Prine, but only until you try and write like him do you realize how hard it is to be genuine and funny all at once. ‘If You Were A Stranger’ was my attempt at writing a genuine love song for my partner (with a splash of humour), and I think it features some great understated playing from Jim Bryson, Christine Bougie, and Peter Von Althen, one of our favourites.”

summersets is the new duo from JUNO Award and Polaris Music Prize nominated singer-songwriter Kalle Mattson, and longtime collaborator Andrew Sowka. Influenced by the storytelling of John Prine and delivered with the delicacy of Simon & Garfunkel, their debut full-length, small town story, was produced by Jim Bryson (Kathleen Edwards, The Weakerthans) and nominated for both a 2024 Ontario Folk Music Award and a 2025 Canadian Folk Music Award. They are currently in the studio working on their followup LP once again with Jim Bryson, Peter Von Althen (Skydiggers) and Christine Bougie (Bahamas), due out later this year.

Lauren Dillen’s songs are arborescent, growing with tender determination. This suits the Toronto singer-songwriter, whose love of plants extends from the metaphors in her songs to the plant cyanotypes she crafts as album artwork to her work as a tattoo artist, specializing in vintage botanical designs. With a mindful approach, Dillen’s folk songs uncover the understory by keenly observing what’s on the surface. As she sings, “we watch the leaves shoot up as the roots shoot down.”

While Dillen’s soothing voice and deft musicianship can be heard through her work with folk-rock quartet Burs, her solo project is all about self-work and following her instincts. Her songs are reminiscent of Joni Mitchell, Laura Marling, and Andy Shauf, with soundscapes informed by ambient musicians like Emily A. Sprague.

Today, Dillen is releasing the new single “Candles”, which she says inspects “the nature of a long term relationship; the feeling of years rolling by, small moments of appreciation, complexity, care, negotiation (and renegotiation), choosing (and choosing again) commitment to one another. Like a child on their birthday, a bit of blind faith might be required.”

MORE ABOUT LAUREN DILLEN

Lauren Dillen’s music resonates with the confidence of someone who knew who they were at a young age, despite their conservative environment. Growing up in Brooklin, Ontario, Dillen was one of the only openly queer people in her rural high school. Songwriting, especially writing her first guitar-and-voice love songs, became a means of exploring her identity. Though there was no music infrastructure in town, Dillen was driven to create her own performance opportunities, starting open mics and offering sets at local restaurants—“Most people would describe me as strong-willed,” she offers, smiling. These creative outlets were also fundamental to Dillen’s sense of self, “ways to fill her cup of self-esteem,” and she knew, “if I wasn’t careful, it could have been knocked right down.” Soon Dillen was performing constantly, whether singing in the jazz choir or playing her own songs at a café, until she went to study at Humber College and found her feet in Toronto’s indie scene.

The throughline of Dillen’s music over the years has been truthseeking. With refreshing, intentional arrangements, she shares songs with the intimacy of sharing a garment. “These songs aren’t necessarily the truth,” Dillen explains, “but I write them out to explore the truth, to explore what something actually looks like.” Dillen unveils the feelings that linger behind a relationship, expressed through precious details in soft light—a trait she shares with fellow Toronto songwriters like Sister Ray and Charlotte Cornfield.

With a fresh excitement for performing her music and a newfound connection to her own truth, Lauren Dillen is basking in all that arises. “I don’t have to push towards the things that I want,” Dillen reflects, “I can just allow them to unfold.”

Today, Allison Russell has teased new music with the single “No Springtime” featuring Joy Oladokun and Julie Williams and produced by Allison Russell and Dim Star. Of “No Springtime”, Russell says, “When I talk about reconnecting to something essential, I don’t mean grasping for the most available sunshine. ‘No Springtime’ is about embracing the dark side of the moon - the blues, sadness, melancholy … Blues are activated sadness, never passive, and this is something Black Women deeply understand. It feels so good singing this with my sisters, Joy Oladokun and Julie Williams. Live your blues, don’t wallow and loop. No light without shadows!”

She made her Billboard Hot 100 debut thanks to their duet “Wildflower and Barley.

The accolades for Russell from her previous two albums Outside Child and The Returner, have been immense. Last year she was nominated for the Polaris Music Prize and named Billboard Women In Music Canada’s “Breakthrough Artist of the Year.” She has had 8 Grammy Award nominations and one win, earned three 2022 Americana Award nominations and a win for Album of the Year with subsequent nominations in 2023 and 2024, two International Folk Music Award wins, a 2022 JUNO Award nomination for ‘Songwriter of the Year,’ and her first-ever JUNO Award win for Contemporary Roots Album of the Year.
