Indie rock duo Tommy Lefroy share the new single “Angel in the House”, one of the most defiant moments from their forthcoming debut album, The Precariat, out October 23 via Thirty Tigers. Built around sludgy, distorted guitar riffs, the song draws inspiration from Virginia Woolf’s landmark 1931 speech Professions for Women and its depiction of the ‘Angel in the House,’ a metaphor for the idealized, self-sacrificing woman whose obligations to others come at the expense of her own ambitions.

Nearly a century after Woolf described the struggle to ‘kill’ that Angel in order to write freely, Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel found the idea newly resonant as traditional ideals of femininity resurfaced across social media and popular culture. “Angel in the House” connects those eras, examining the roles women inherit, resist and sometimes find reflected back at them by the people closest to them.

The song culminates by bringing past and present into direct collision, layering excerpts from Woolf’s Professions for Women with contemporary language surrounding the trad-wife movement. The end of the chorus echoes as a haunting reminder of the Angel’s presence: ‘(I can’t) do away with her’.

The accompanying music video, co-directed by Mouzourakis and Emmy Award-nominated artist and photographer Brendon Burton, brings the song’s central conflict to life against the stark winter landscape of Saskatchewan. Bethel and Mouzourakis inhabit two characters: the Angel and the ‘Tommy girl’. At once loving, haunting, cheeky and antagonistic, the Angel follows her counterpart through the frozen landscape, embodying the complicated push and pull of femininity.

Bethel, who choreographed the video’s dance sequences, performs in a self-sourced authentic Victorian lace gown, further blurring the line between historical ideals of womanhood and their modern-day echoes.

“Angel in the House” follows recent singles “Thief” and “Slush Puppy” from The Precariat, an album written over six years between Nashville, Los Angeles, Vancouver, Michigan and London. Taking its name from the economic term for a growing class of people living with increasing instability, The Precariat draws from literature, art and history to examine what it means to come of age in an increasingly unpredictable world.

The album’s literary underpinnings were recently explored in a wide-ranging SPIN feature, which dubbed Tommy Lefroy “music’s biggest book nerds” and highlighted the duo’s practice of hosting book swaps at their concerts, as well as the suggested reading list accompanying The Precariat. From Virginia Woolf and suffragette Mary Richardson to Guy Standing’s The Precariat: The New Dangerous Class, these influences become jumping-off points for songs connecting history with the anxieties and contradictions of life today.

Co-produced by Tommy Lefroy alongside Stephen Sesso, with executive production from Mike Crossey (The 1975, Arctic Monkeys, MUNA), The Precariat ultimately finds connection and community as an antidote to that uncertainty.

Tommy Lefroy will celebrate the album’s release with their October 23 headline show at Stone Circle Theatre in Queens. Additional fall headline dates will take the duo to Toronto, Chicago and Los Angeles.

Since releasing their debut EP Flight Risk in 2021, Tommy Lefroy has earned a JUNO Award nomination for Breakthrough Artist of the Year, opened for Sigrid at Wembley Arena less than a year after playing their first headline show in London, and toured internationally with Samia and Niall Horan, performing for audiences numbering in the tens of thousands.

““backporch” is a snapshot of what it feels like to fall in love with a brand new to you person. Sonically, the song feels like it belongs under twinkling lights at twilight in an era overrun with Delia’s catalogues and Bonne Bell Dr. Pepper Lipsmackers. The chorus swells and breaks like the tide on the beach with its sharp infusion of ’90s alt rock and pop. CJ Wiley’s “backporch” is gooey and bright in all of the ways you want a love song like this to be, and, honestly, may make you put butterfly clips in your hair.” - SOCAN Magazine, ‘Song of the Week, “backporch”

Today, CJ Wiley is releasing their new EP, Just Can’t Quit; a collection of songs that reflects the phases of relationships: the cycle of having a crush, falling in love, making a commitment and breaking up.

The EP unpacks what it’s like to fall in love and keep going back for more no matter how many times love kicks your ass. Like some beautiful masochistic ritual we can't get enough of. Every love is different. Hits different, hurts different.

Just Can’t Quit “captures the idea that no matter how many times love kicks our ass, we always go back for more. Like some beautiful masochistic ritual, we can’t get enough of it,” explains Wiley. “Every love is different. Hits different, hurts different. The truth is I was falling in love while making this record and heartbroken by the end, so these songs are a true reflection of that entire arc.”

“fluke” is a song for the initial crush. While “backporch” is about the honeymoon period and trying to slow it down to just share a moment of bliss. “pet” is about the vulnerabilities of fully committing to another person and still craving affection despite both your flaws.

The last song on the EP, “wasp”, talks about how breakups lead to estrangement, and when there’s no contact, things feel like it’s all rupture and no repair.

“I wrote ‘wasp’ about no contact, estrangement, and the complicated guilt that comes with stepping away from family,” says Wiley. “There’s so much pressure to forgive, make peace, and move on. I understand why people choose that, but I’m not there yet. I still need a little more time.

“In turn, I’ve felt these themes closely while navigating my most recent breakup. The one person you’re going through that thing with is the person you can’t talk to about it. There’s something so uniquely painful about that. When it’s all rupture and no repair, you can’t help but feel the sting.

MORE ABOUT CJ WILEY
Already a mainstay in Canada’s music scene having opened for artists like Tokyo Police Club, Boy Golden, US Girls, Juliana Riolino and performed at festivals like Mariposa Folk Fest, Super Crawl Riverfest Elora and Tiny Lights.

They’ve also staked their claim as a leader in the queer community as the host of the Big Gay Night concert series as well as with their performances at Pride Toronto (2022, 2023 & 2025).

2025 marked the release of So Brand New, Wiley’s debut full length LP. The artist sojourned to Winnipeg to record with Boy Golden and that polished western resonance is obvious from the album’s first blasts. It’s a passionate, tongue-in-cheek statement of certainty in themselves, a down-and-dirty roots-rock revelation that burns in a firestorm of its own conviction. Wiley sings of starting fresh, loss, gender, and how expensive it is to be alive, carving out a decisive path for themselves on a highway into and over the horizon — and they’re bringing you with them.

In support of So Brand New, they not only played shows across Canada but also ventured to the UK for The Great Escape and FOCUS Wales as their first international run of shows.

Tearing through Toronto on a groundswell of gripping indie pop and slacker rock, non-binary singer-songwriter CJ Wiley doesn’t waste any time. Twirling guitars, a steady drum beat, crunchy bass; ballads twanged slightly country, anthems skewed slightly grunge; a message of love and anger, healing and rancour, Wiley’s musical project is urgent and undeniable.

PRAISE FOR CJ WILEY
“CJ Wiley keeps things simple in order to get complex. Warm guitars, steady drums and lively bass — sometimes that's all you need to start a fire. Wiley's Boy Golden-produced debut lights all kinds of fires, an ever-shifting document of change and renewal” Exclaim!

“Songs about friendship are criminally underrated. “You still call me up when my heart is burning / To calm me down with a midnight sermon,” Toronto alt-country singer CJ Wiley sings on “Adelaide,” a remarkable song about chosen family, and “choosing to love and grow together instead of growing apart. Wiley’s debut album, “So Brand Now,” is filled with striking songs about love, identity and acceptance” The Toronto Star

LAUREN DILLEN’S DEBUT EP, BLUE STAR, OUT TODAY

Photo Credit : Colin Medley  // DOWNLOAD HIGH-RES

Today, Lauren Dillen releases her debut solo EP, titled Blue Star. The collection sees Dillen emerging from a “very passionate and difficult” time in her life. “My early twenties were all about working hard and striving for perfection despite what my body wanted, acting on obligation rather than joy,” Dillen explains. “I’m learning that it’s my job to advocate for my body as if it were my small child.” The result of this growth can be heard throughout Blue Star, with Dillen feeling more confident than ever to articulate just what she means: “My channels are clear, and I can be honest.”

Lauren Dillen’s songs are arborescent, ever-growing outward with tender determination. This suits the Toronto singer-songwriter, whose love of plants extends from the metaphors in her songs to the plant cyanotypes she crafts as album artwork to her work as a tattoo artist specializing in vintage botanical designs. With a mindful approach, Dillen’s folk songs uncover the understory by keenly observing what’s on the surface. As she sings, ‘we watch the leaves shoot up as the roots shoot down.’

WATCH / SHARE “CHAINS, RINGS” HERE

While Dillen’s soothing voice and deft musicianship can be heard through her work with folk-rock quartet Burs, her solo project is all about self-work and following her instincts. In recent years, she has brought this work to stages across Canada, opening for artists such as Charlotte Cornfield, Bahamas, and Great Lake Swimmers, as well as performing at festivals and touring extensively across the country, steadily building a reputation for intimate but expansive live performances.

MORE ABOUT BLUE STAR
The record is anchored in questions of identity and how it becomes attached to people and things. The focus track, “Chains, Rings”, unfolds as a coming-of-age lesson in detaching self-worth from romantic validation and breaking cycles of external approval. “Deepest Part of Love” and “Candles” both turn toward long-term relationships and commitment, examining what it takes to build and sustain healthy love.

“One More Time for the Road”, the first release from the project, moves through the disorientation of relapse and return, circling familiar emotional patterns and the pull toward once-familiar forms of validation.

The performance on the EP’s title track, “Blue Star”, draws directly from Dillen’s work in Toronto’s ambient music scene, using a freeze pedal vocal effect to create a suspended, reflective space within the record. Functioning as a pause in the narrative, it gently compels the listener into a moment of reflection.

LISTEN / SHARE “CANDLES” HERE

Dillen began the EP with a day of recording at the National Music Centre in Calgary. In the studio that houses one of Neil Young’s microphones and Elton John’s original songwriting piano, Dillen brought these songs to life with gentle production support from engineer Graham Lessard (The Barr Brothers, Timber Timbre). Inspired in part by ambient organist Molly Raben, Dillen found herself drawn to the studio’s pipe organ (as she puts it, “that’s an insane instrument, I must use it!”), creating a reedy atmosphere that runs through much of the record.

The throughline of Dillen’s music over the years has always been truth-seeking. With refreshing, intentional arrangements, she shares songs with the intimacy of sharing a garment. “These songs aren’t necessarily the truth,” Dillen explains, “but I write them out to explore the truth, to explore what something actually looks like.” Dillen unveils the feelings that linger behind relationships, where the most precious details surface only in soft light.

WATCH / SHARE “WILDFLOWERS OF NORTH AMERICA” HERE

The closer, “Wildflowers of North America”, draws its name from an inherited botanical textbook marked by a sticky note from her grandmother on a page featuring the blue star flower, reframing the EP’s central question into something perhaps more delicate: not only who we are in relation to others, but what remains in the fleeting texture of shared moments.

With a fresh excitement for performing her music and a newfound connection to her own truth, Lauren Dillen is basking in all that arises. “I don’t have to push towards the things that I want,” Dillen reflects, “I can just allow them to unfold.”
