Scattered Clouds darkened the tint of summer 2019 with its new record TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER, a futuristic broken romance set amidst a burning dystopian landscape. Inspired by the dichotomous terrain of their hometown of Hull, Québec, the experimental outfit of Philippe Charbonneau and Jamie Kronick explores themes of political conspiracy, post-capitalism, police brutality and nihilism on their second full-length, set against a romantic backdrop of auto-fictional narratives told in both English and French prose.

Today, the band shares two videos for the album song “Morning After,” a two-part track prequel to their single/video “Days on End” that layers old analog synths with elliptical bass melodies and hand sequenced arpeggios.

Morning After Pt. 1”  is an “uneasy sleep, a lucid dream and a prelude to contempt and regret,” offers the band. Calling to mind the dystopian atmosphere of Terminator 1 or Escape From NY, the video, directed by experimental filmmakers Charles-Andre Coderre (Jerusalem In My Heart) and Guillaume Vallée, was a “spontaneous creation by dancer choreographer Kim Sanh Chau, created live with analog video camera & 16mm film projector,” Coderre says.

“Morning After Pt. 2” – a latter years Leonard Cohen-esque monologue creates a dramatic bittersweet ending, “a hazy morning filled with contempt and regret,” says frontman Charbonneau. Shot and directed by Andre Baker (Alternative Deletes), the video is cinematic, disquieting, post-romance - with cigarette smoke anxiously dancing around part two of this synthetic, heartbroken orchestral suit.

With a sonic palette that calls to mind late 70s / early 80s soundtracks like Vangelis’ Blade Runner, John Carpenter’s Escape From New York, Brad Fiedel’s The Terminator, and Tangerine Dream’s The Sorcerer, TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER walks the razor thin line between cacophony and delight, balancing the uneasy ecstasy of Suicide and the thundering underbelly or Liars.

TAKE AWAY YOUR SUMMER was written and performed by Philippe Charbonneau, Michael John Dubue, and Jamie Kronick in Hull, Québec, with Grammy-nominated Ottawa engineer/mixer Philip Shaw Bova. Featuring artwork based on a photo of a quietly burning dépanneur seen by Charbonneau one summer night, the album imagery captures the ominous yet seductive confines of the band’s all-too-vivid anti-utopia. The album was released on June 27, 2019 by Boiled Records, the Toronto & Philadelphia-based experimental record that released fellow Hull band FET.NAT’s Polaris Short Listed Le Mal LP earlier this year.
