"The future meets the past as Dutcher’s resonant operatic voice is paired with a recording made over 110 years ago of a speech. Layered with crystalline strings and booming horns, the result sounds grandiose yet intimate." - NOISEY

Jeremy Dutcher is a classically trained operatic tenor, composer, activist, and musicologist who takes every opportunity to blend his Wolastoq First Nation roots into the music he creates, blending distinct musical aesthetics that shape-shift between classical, traditional, and pop to form something entirely new. Today, he has shared “Pomok naka Poktoinskwes”, the latest song from his upcoming album Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa, due out April 6.

Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (wool-las-two-wi-ig lint-two-wah-gun-ah-wa) finds Dutcher exploring, reworking, and collaborating with the voices of his ancestors which he discovered and transcribed from turn-of-the-century wax cylinders.

“Pomok naka Poktoinskwes” (bah-mog na-ga buck-tah-in-skwes) is the song of the Fisher and the Water Spirit. “This was the only archival recording that I recognized from my childhood,” says Dutcher. “It was recovered in the 80s by song carrier Maggie Paul and has been sung in Maliseet communities ever since. I envision Teiya’s high soprano to be that spirit who is troubled by her treatment.”

Dutcher has also shared the powerful artwork that has become the album cover of Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa. Together with Cree visual artist Kent Monkman, the piece began with the iconic image of ethnographer Frances Densmore collecting songs from Blackfoot chief Ninna-Stako in 1916. The image “is one that has followed me through the process of working on Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa; maybe haunted me,” says Dutcher. “I wanted to flip this image on it’s head and reflect on a contemporary musical self-determination, while integrating the supposed objectivity of the archival project and how it reinforces detachment from communal rematriation. We are reclaiming it.”

The album cover, photographed by Matt Barns and a featuring a custom jacket from Wolastoq designer Stephanie Labillios, also includes Monkman’s stunning work “Teaching The Lost” as a backdrop.

MORE ABOUT JEREMY DUTCHER AND WOLASTOQIYIK LINTUWAKONAWA

A member of Tobique First Nation in New Brunswick, Jeremy first did music studies in Halifax before taking a chance to work in the archives at the Canadian Museum of History, painstakingly transcribing Wolastoq songs from 1907 wax cylinders. “Many of the songs I'd never heard before, because our musical tradition on the East Coast was suppressed by the Canadian Government’s Indian Act,” explains Dutcher. He heard ancestral voices singing forgotten songs and stories that had been taken from the Wolastoqiyik generations ago.

As he listened to each recording, he felt his own musical impulses stirring from deep within. Long days at the archives turned into long nights at the piano, feeling out melodies and phrases, deep in dialogue with the voices of his ancestors. His “collaborative” compositions on his new album, Wolastoqiyik Lintuwakonawa (wool-las-two-wi-ig lint-two-wah-gun-ah-wa), are like nothing you’ve ever heard. Delicate, sublime vocal melodies ring out atop piano lines that cascade through a vibrant range of emotions. The anguish and joy of the past erupt fervently into the present through Jeremy’s bold approach to composition and raw, affective performances enhanced by his outstanding tenor techniques.

“I'm doing this work because there's only about a hundred Wolastoqey speakers left,” he says. “It's crucial for us to make sure that we're using our language and passing it on to the next generation. If you lose the language, you're not just losing words; you're losing an entire way of seeing and experiencing the world from a distinctly indigenous perspective.”

Last year, Dutcher spent some time on the road with the New Constellation’s tour. Hosted by Jason Collett, the music and literary tour travelled to cities, towns, and Indigenous communities across the nation, featuring a core roster of Indigenous artists alongside a rotating cast of some of the country’s most celebrated musicians, writers, and poets. NOW Toronto claims that if you caught the tour “you were likely blown away by Jeremy Dutcher’s booming operatic voice and sweeping performance.”

Dutcher will spend some more time on the road this Spring and Summer, with stops and festival dates throughout Canada. Full tour dates can be found below.

Absolutes, the forthcoming EP of New York indie pop act Yoke Lore, explores the grey areas between black and white ideas while building upon the lush, sonic palette of his past works. The new music finds multi-instrumentalist, dancer, and visual artist Adrian Galvin polishing his heartfelt anthems and ruminating on finding balance amid respective oppositions by breaking through the notion that truth necessitates purity.

“These songs all gravitate around the struggle between two sides of something,” Galvin explains. The opening track, “Fake You”, is about the difficulty of realizing your perception of someone doesn’t necessarily match who they really are. “Cut And Run” follows, conveying the instinct to flee versus the instinct to find a home, and “Concrete” illustrates Galvin’s struggle between living in the city and being in the country. “So, they are all the conflicts of absolutes,” he states. “There must be a balance, some movement and some pull. A life of absolutes is no life at all.” As with his previous releases, Galvin drew the artwork for his upcoming EP using bifurcated lines and contrasting imagery to convey his messages of absolutes.

The former Walk The Moon and Yellerkin member’s solo musical endeavor combines echoing waves of banjo, vocals, and percussion to create unforgettable pop songs with tactile sincerity and conviction. Galvin first hit the ground running in 2016 with Yoke Lore’s debut EP, Far Shore. In 2017, the title track of his 2017 EP Goodpain hit #1 on Hype Machine, and quickly after his songs caught fire on Spotify, racking up over 10 million plays throughout the year.

Goodpain also garnered attention from major tastemakers such as NYLON, Consequence of Sound, Billboard, and more. Yoke Lore toured extensively through 2017 with acts like Aquilo and fellow Arts & Crafts labelmates Overcoats, while also making his way to the UK for The Great Escape and festivals like Field Trip in Toronto and Billboard Hot 100 in New York.

Following the success of his song “Goodpain”, Galvin was invited to Spotify’s New York City studio to record a stripped-down version the track, as well as two covers for his Spotify Singles: “Last Christmas” by Wham! and “Truly Madly Deeply” by Savage Garden. His holiday song graced Spotify’s Holiday Singles playlist alongside covers by Demi Lovato, Sam Smith, and Miley Cyrus.

After a successful first-ever run of headline tour dates, Yoke Lore found a unexpected new fan in pop idol Taylor Swift, who added his cover of “Truly Madly Deeply” to her “Songs Taylor Loves” Spotify playlist in 2018. Galvin will release his third EP, Absolutes in the summer of 2018 after a cross-country spring tour with FRENSHIP.

MAJOR LOVE, FEATURING COLLEEN BROWN WITH MEMBERS OF SCENIC ROUTE TO ALASKA, JESSE AND THE DANDELIONS, ELIJAH ABRAMS, AND AARON GOLDSTEIN, TO RELEASE NEW SELF-TITLED EP ON MARCH 9 VIA LATENT RECORDINGS

Major Love is the moniker of Canadian songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Colleen Brown and members of Scenic Route To Alaska, Jesse And The Dandelions, Elijah Abrams, and Aaron Goldstein. The resulting combination is a sound that thrives at the intersection between Brown’s resonant vocal expression and Scenic Route To Alaska’s swagger. From Edmonton, Alberta by way of Kingston, Ontario, they make soulful pop-rock music for their hoser friends.

The band has signed with Latent Recordings to release a new self-titled EP this week, March 9, and will release a full length album later this year. Two of the EP’s four tracks have already seen a lot of praise. “Tear It Down” is currently in heavy rotation on CBC Radio 2, reaching #4 on the Radio 2 Top 20, while “Motherland” - written essentially as a love-letter to Alberta - won a province wide songwriting contest through the ATB competition, to the tune of $10,000.

EP track, “So Good” was written at a hostel in London while Brown was on tour in the UK. “I hope it doesn't spoil the magic too much to simply say that I'd gone for a walk one morning, and lay down on the grass in a beautiful neighbourhood park in the early summer sun, basically counting my blessings to be touring overseas for the first time, playing music,” she says. “The whole thing was written in about 10 mins, in the hostel shower stall - it's hard to find privacy in those places!”

The self-titled EP is the first under this new moniker, and was conceived in the lamplight of London’s Bedroom Bar during Brown’s first tour overseas. Fellow Edmontonians, Scenic Route To Alaska, were also wrapping their first tour in Germany and the UK. The two acts found themselves on the same dimly lit stage in Shoreditch, 7000 kms from their hometown, bonding over an appreciation of vintage Harmony guitars, singalong pop/rock anthems and an affinity for the spacious, soulful recordings released on the Stax and Motown labels in the 1960’s.

“I watched them play and knew right away that I wanted to work with them, and we got along gangbusters right from the get-go... it felt like synchronicity,” says Brown. “We went into the studio with our mutual friend and collaborator Jesse Northey (Jesse And The Dandelions) within a month of returning home, planning just to record one or two songs to test the waters. Things felt and sounded so amazing that we just tracked the whole EP there.”

Recorded live off the floor in Edmonton’s True North Studios with Northey on keys and faders, they were joined by multi-instrumentalist Elijah Abrams, with additional mixes and co-production by Toronto-based pedal steel guru Aaron Goldstein and Kenneth Meehan (Daniel Romano). The singalong track “So Good” was mixed by Brooklyn’s prodigious hit-makers Gus van Go and Werner F.
