Fresh off the release of her new album and debut for Arts & Crafts, Fine But Dying, Liza Anne unveils the official music video for standout single “Small Talks”. Following a miffed Liza as she attempts to evade the droning chit-chat of her peers, the video is a caustic tale of the maddening nature of Southern hospitality.

"I've always been exhausted by the strange interactions you have with people where it seems like both of you are wanting a way out”, says Liza Anne. “‘Small Talks’ is my confrontation of southern hospitality and the sour role it plays in relational well being. We should all be straightforward with each other and not kill a situation with fake nice. Sometimes there is nothing to say and that's fine.”

Of the video, director Josh Gilligan says "Brett Warren (art director) and I wanted to create a party that painted a picture of the rampant insincerity Liza refers to in ‘Small Talks’. Empty coffee invites, courtesy laughs, people pleasing. The video is tongue-in-cheek, a bit of satire. Everyone's having a good time, getting tipsy, ‘networking’ and whatever else. We want you to see right through it."

“Small Talks”, which Stereogum called a “hard-charging rocker,” is one of the grittiest tracks on Fine But Dying. Released on March 9, the album received plaudits from NPR Music, who dubbed Liza's sound "internal warfare, externalized...bold in both sound and subject," and EARMILK, who likened the record to "poetry that conjures inward contemplations of love, past experiences and raw moments of living with alarming clarity.” Further accolades came from Billboard, who recently chatted with Liza about Fine But Dying while praising the album for its "unapologetic" lyrical style.

This week, Lindi Ortega begins the first leg of her Canadian tour dates in Alberta, returning in April to Calgary and Winnipeg, and then to Ontario and Quebec in May. Full tour listings can be found below. For ticket information please visit lindiortega.com.

Today, the acclaimed songwriter has also revealed another track from her upcoming three-part concept album, Liberty. The character throughout the album seems to have found some unsavory friends in “You Ain’t Foolin’ Me”, “particularly the backstabbing two-faced variety,” says Ortega. “But, the character is wise to this and knows maybe it's time to give these friends the boot. Some southerners say the phrase ‘bless your heart’ may have negative connotations, and while it appears like a lovely thing to say, it is sometimes meant in a mean-spirited way. I was drawing from that concept when I wrote this song. The mean folks parading as angels but we know they ain't no angels.”

Uproxx calls “You Ain’t Foolin’ Me” a “smirking revenge track” and notes that “she doesn’t waste any time sugar-coating the shade in this track, as she deviously calls out less-than-loyal friends, analogizing them to lions dressed in sheep’s clothing.

Due out March 30, Ortega wrote roughly half of the twelve tracks on Liberty solo, and enlisted co-writers Aaron Raitiere, Bruce Wallace, and John Paul White (The Civil Wars) for the rest.

The melodies and arrangements of Liberty draw on the epic work of Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone, who became one of Ortega’s musical obsessions during the writing and recording of Liberty.

During the sessions at Battle Tapes studio in East Nashville Ortega and producer Skylar Wilson (Justin Townes Earle, Rayland Baxter) scaled back the boot-stomping, throwback country approach that she’s known for, instead polishing a set of music that reflects her lineage. Her father is Mexican; her mother is Irish. The sonic landscape of Liberty is enhanced by Nashville band Steelism, known for their dramatic blend of pedal steel guitar and electric guitar, as well as Country Music Hall of Fame member Charlie McCoy on harmonica.

Stereogum called Ought’s third record Room Inside the World “a rewarding new chapter... the album finds the band going in exciting new directions.” Today, Ought are sharing the cinematic music video for “Desire” ahead of their busy week at SXSW.

Of the video, director Heather Rappard said ““Desire” as a song has a real triumphant quality and masculine energy; I wanted to take this and subvert it and create a video that focused more on internal desire. Something that was important to me was that the video feel cathartic and positive; I’ve seen a lot of videos that take on ideas around gender that have characters being assaulted, or just exoticized. I wanted this character to have a full life but be most empowered, happiest, and at peace with himself when he’s on stage at the end.”
