“...a fresh approach to a time-tested formula, presenting sentimental songwriting over electronic beats, both hearty and sparse.” - NPR, All Songs Considered

"the New York City-based pair put their sumptuously entwined voices to work over patiently groovin’ electro-pop jams that dwell in smouldering territory that’s equal parts folk, soul and futuristic dance music. ...Elion and Mitchell variously conjure the spartan, stylized sadness of the xx, Feist on a slow-motion house-music bender, the witchy alchemy of Warpaint in its weirder moments and Lorde if she saw fit to accessorize her tunes with occasional flickers of
distant big-room EDM.” - The Toronto Star

Earlier this year, Overcoats’ first single “Hold Me Close” spent several week on CBC’s Radio 2 Top 20. This morning, Pigeons & Planes premiered the latest song from the duo’s debut album YOUNG, due out April 21 via Arts & Crafts. The introspective track “Kai’s Song” sees members Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell reflecting on the small daily changes that can add up to make someone almost unrecognizable.  Pigeons & Planes claims that “Overcoats shine with their vocal harmonies and timeless songwriting, creating an intriguing blend of modern and classic styles.”.

Overcoats just wrapped a run of dates supporting Maggie Rogers and will embark on a nationwide headlining tour this month. In addition, the band has picked up dates opening for Joseph this June. Full tour routing can be found below. For a look at their live show, watch their recent NPR Tiny Desk Concert.

YOUNG has earned early praise from Gorilla vs. Bear and NPR's Bob Boilen who said, "The deep friendship between Hana Elion and JJ Mitchell comes across in their vibrant harmonies and the bountiful dance parties that pop up as they go." Co-produced by Nicolas Vernhes (The War On Drugs, Dirty Projectors) and Autre Ne Veut, YOUNG is a story about growing up told through the lens of two women who are wise beyond their years.

Hana and JJ started Overcoats while they were college roommates and they co-wrote all twelve songs on YOUNG. The two were drawn to each other when they first met as teenagers in 2011, finding connection in a love of diverse musical styles, and forging a closeness that verges on sisterhood. Both members of Overcoats describe the first time hearing each other sing as an epiphany: the harmony of their voices leading to personal, individual discovery.
