Today, Hannah Georgas is pleased to share details of her new album, I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care, set for release August 25, 2023 via Arts & Crafts. The celebrated songwriter is also sharing the new single “Better Somehow” which arrives with a video directed by label mate Bess Atwell.

“I’m trying to be more honest with my feelings and be more comfortable communicating them. I think this track is quite vulnerable in that respect,” says Georgas of the new single. “It’s about being less self-critical and accepting the side of me that’s weird, insecure and has faults. I’ve been through many situations where someone has hurt my feelings by saying something offensive and I end up not saying anything about it and feeling resentful. I don’t want to hold on to negative thoughts and let them eat away at me. I internalise a lot, and this song is about wanting to be more open.”

Driven by anthemic percussion and soft, electronic inflections, Georgas is emboldened to make confessions she would otherwise suppress, exploring the tension between what we think and what we present to the world around us. “The song is ultimately about how much better I think we’d all be if we just communicated exactly what we were feeling or what we were going through.”

Where Hannah’s last record, 2020’s All That Emotion, was produced alongside Aaron Dessner, her next album finds Georgas behind the glass. Joining her is partner Sean Sroka (of Ten Kills The Pack) in a co-production capacity. Other musicians that contributed along the way include James McAlister on drums (one of Sufjan Steven’s regular confidantes), Graham Walsh (whose synth and bass regularly peppers records by the likes of Holy Fuck and Metz), and Gabe Wax (Soccer Mommy’s go-to collaborator, but has also worked with War on Drugs, Kurt Vile, and Spoon) who contributed his drum programming Skills.

Ultimately though, Georgas sought to take the reins herself, taking back control of her own destiny, and cutting out too much outside influence. Recorded in Toronto with a treasure trove of analogue equipment and a work ethic that left no idea unturned, I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care is a wonderful record by a songwriter at the real peak of her powers.

“This record is a big step for me from a creative standpoint and it feels like a true representation of where my writing and head is at,” says Georgas. “This album means a lot to me and I'm really proud of it. It feels like a long time coming but also feels like it wouldn't have come together without all of the time and experiences I've had leading up to this.”
