Today, Babygirl, the Toronto and Los Angeles-based duo of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright, are sharing another new single, “You Don’t Need A Reason To Call”. A wistful dedication to unconditional companionship, with Frances’s sweet vocals underscored by lightly frayed guitar, “You Don’t Need A Reason To Call” is a song that “honours the hours-long phone call, and the person that you can call at any time for any reason, even if there’s no reason at all,” says the band. “There’s a certain rare intimacy between people that reach out to one another without cause, just to pass the time together. How nice it is that we can keep each other company even when we aren’t in the same room or city or country - it still feels like something to marvel at.”

Babygirl have a penchant for vivid imagery in their singular music, a wistful take on bittersweet pop rock that heedlessly transports into the soundtrack of a teen drama from the early aughts. Following the recent singles "Take Me Back" and "After You", Babygirl further enlivens their effervescent definition of pop music with "You Don't Need A Reason To Call".

MORE ABOUT BABYGIRL
Babygirl met while enrolled in a jazz program at Toronto’s Humber College and bonded over a shared love of Katy Perry, The Beach Boys, and the art of a good pop song. They were kindred pop spirits, as though fated to be a songwriting team. A pair of pop music philosophers, the two connected over dissecting the math of Max Martin and Swedish-penned Top 40 hits. “It was nice to find someone else there that was super passionate about pop music and took it seriously in the same way,” they say.

Celebrated for their three EPs, Be Still My Heart (2023), Losers Weepers (2021) and Lovers Fevers (2018) – which have amassed over 50 million streams and earned glowing praise from platforms like Noisey, Rolling Stone, PAPER, and NYLON, Babygirl now stand poised with their best music to date.

PAST PRAISE FOR BABYGIRL

“The chorus soars out from the shadows of nostalgia of melancholic recollections of moments with someone who redefined what love can be and into the bright burst of luminosity that saturates the single's accompanying artwork, with open chords and twinkling synths swirling like dust in a sunbeam: "Caught me in your headlights, I forgot to move." Exclaim! on "After You"

“While their nostalgic sound recalls the warm malaise of ’90s alternative rock, the band’s lyrics strike a contemporary chord, blending sad, solitary images with moments of crystalline clarity and emotional weight.” CONSEQUENCE

"Bandmates Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright layer on the melancholic yearning, jangling guitars, and haze ‘90s vibes, hitting on a deft balance of earnest pop melody and indie rock malaise.” Under The Radar

Recently, indie pop band Babygirl released the new single “After You,” a sublime and captivating offering about true love and fleeting summer moments, and the band’s first new music since 2023’s breathtaking Be Still My Heart EP. Today, the Toronto- and Los Angeles-based duo of Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright follow suit with the second glimpse of the new music they are conjuring – "Take Me Back" – a song brimming with wistful pop hooks, honeyed vocals in a haze of melody, and a chorus that, by contrast, pleads for love to return.

“The song is an apology,” Babygirl says (longingly). “It shows up on your doorstep with flowers in its hand. It’s about getting a taste of the ‘freedom’ you thought you wanted only to realize it’s not what you thought it would be. Musically, we wanted to channel the earnestness and sunshine of 60’s pop melodies and the sonic character of 90’s alternative.”

Today, indie pop band Babygirl shares their first music newly signed to hometown label Arts & Crafts. Raised in Toronto and often found working out of Los Angeles, Kiki Frances and Cameron Bright return with “After You” – their first single since 2023’s critically-acclaimed Be Still My Heart EP.

On “After You,” the longtime collaborators make a sublime and captivating offering about true love, with whimsical pop hooks, a chorus that brims with warmth, and vicarious storytelling set against the backdrop of fleeting summertime moments. With airy synths, subtle guitars, and spare hand claps all draped in Frances’ lush vocals, Babygirl set a new standard for serene bedroom pop laden in aura.

“‘After You’ is about a person who sets a new standard and redefines what love is to you,” the band describes. “The bar gets raised so high, you feel certain it could never be cleared by anyone else. There’s a powerlessness to feeling so attached to someone: they’ve widened the spectrum in both directions — the love you have is equal to the loss you risk.”
