Nunavut musician and Aakuluk Music label owner Andrew Morrison, the one-time leader of JUNO Award-nominated Arctic folk-rock group the Jerry Cans, has created a beautiful and often mournful piano record, Last Days. The record is comprised of six instrumentals with each of the same works also recorded with Inuktitut-language poetry by rock legend James Ungalaq (Northern Haze) and JUNO Award-nominated singer-songwriter Terry Uyarak.

“It is a grief album, but a life album,” says Andrew. “There's lots about home. I think that's something that we struggle with, in this era of our lives, when we lose people, parents, but also lose people that we look up to artistically.

“It is a great honour to have both James and Terry contribute poetry to my album; they write absolutely beautiful words,” says Andrew. “We wanted to provide both Inuktitut and English guides to their poems with the hope that more people can understand life in Nunavut.”

Today, he shares the first two tracks from the album, “Colours I (Instrumental)” and “Colours II” featuring Terry Uyarak. “This is the first single off an album in a completely new universe for me,” says Morrison. “As the world seems to get more complicated I think lots of us are searching for a solid foundation to live good days. Thoughts and values that seemed solid/normal all our lives are showing cracks, and just as the old man Leonard Cohen said, ‘that's how the light gets in’. What is that light? This song is a process of searching for it and I am honoured to have my dear friend Terry add words about his own pursuit of that light.”

MORE ABOUT LAST DAYS
Last Days was largely inspired by Andrew’s late mother, who was comforted by her son’s piano instrumentals in her final months, but also his need to break out of his comfort zone and create a piece of art that can be taken to the great classical concert halls of the world.

“I wanted to do something that ignores the rest of the commercialized appetites in the music industry and honour non-lyrical music. It’s a world I don’t know too much about, but I think that we’re told too quickly what songs are about, but with the Inuktitut poetry — because most people won’t understand it — the tone of the voice, I hope, conveys that. This is getting back to something that I feel is missing in art, which is our connection to what we’re feeling and expressing.”

During the pandemic, when Andrew’s mother was in care, every morning he played her snippets of the piano songs because he knew she enjoyed them. “I recorded them on my phone just as voice notes,” he says.

Some of those intros are on the final recording, and some he rerecorded after she passed away.  “It was just time to diarize and remember the last moments of my mother passing away,” Andrew says.

Self-produced in Inuktitut and Montreal, the instrumentals “House Is Home v. 1”, “79th ave v.1”, “The News v. 1, The News 2 v.1 ”, “Colours”, and “Sooth Your Soul”, also feature Sara Page (Barr Brothers) on harp and Kristina Koropecki on cello.

“The News” poems were written and recited by James Ungalaq. “Two of his band members had passed away this year so he was also in a devastated space,” says Andrew. “He had a bunch of poems that he had written. It’s him finding his place again, similar to me, being from a band that had a certain identity to something very different. I feel like for both of us, it's been mining our souls a little bit.”

On Friday, Echoes Of…, the new project fronted by the vocals of Andrew Morrison (The Jerry Cans, Terry Uyarak, Aakuluk Music) will release his new album, Euphemisms, out January 26, 2024 on Aakuluk Records. Today, he’s sharing one last single before the release of the album. “Feel Along”, featuring Lovely Things is “a song screaming to the world to be creative / express yourself / feel life and the world,” says Morrison. “I am both cautiously excited and extremely nervous to share these songs with listeners. There are seven million reasons not to play music, share music, open yourself to listeners, to be vulnerable. So much of our society simultaneously values and depends on art but then sets extremely limited parameters on how / what art is valued. I see many artists struggling with this dilemma and more and more putting down their instruments, and be an extension of their voices / perspectives. This is a problem. Support art. support ethical expression. Sit with ideas that you may not understand. Feel along.”

Next month, Morrison will join together with Terry Uyarak for a run of dates in Japan. “Touring still seems to be a unique challenge as Nunavut artists but touring Japan is literally a life long dream,” says Morrison. “It is especially exciting as the tour will be with a beautiful collaborative crew of musicians and circus performers including Uyarak and Maya Cook from Igloolik/artcirq, Mike Thomson and Jaqqi from Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland) and Gisle Henriet (Artcirq) along with my beautiful daughter Viivi who will join us to perform.

“As the Echoes Of… project flows along, the collaborative tour approach is a strange but potentially really wonderful experimental approach to figure out ways to tour in the reality of trying to continue to make music in the world we see today. Japan is the perfect place to try out the first iteration. Echoes Of… Japan.” Full tour dates can be found below.

For today though, he’s sharing another new single from the upcoming LP, “Shine Your Light” featuring Naja P and Maazes. "’Shine Your Light’ was born in the woods at one of the greatest studios in Canada," says Morrison. "Produced by Maazes and featuring one of the world's most beautiful voices from Kalaallit Nunaat - Naja P, the song draws energy from across the Arctic. A love song from the darkness that sometimes accompanies that feeling we all know. Live like you're dead, scream in your head, lie on the floor. This is my favourite song on the album because the collaborative spirit pulled me - and all of us - outside my boundaries. I love Naja P, I love Maazes. Shine your light."
