Today, siblings Mariel Buckley and T. Buckley (Tim Buckley) are sharing their version of The Tragically Hip’s infamous “Bobcaygeon”, a collaboration that came about shortly after Gord Downie passed away. “There was a CKUA fundraiser concert happening down at Ironwood in Calgary that Mariel and I were both playing some tunes at and we wanted to do something by the Hip to honour what they meant to us musically,” says Tim. “I started playing around with trying to fingerpick ‘Bobcaygeon’ and it just seemed to all fall into place.
“One of the great things about singing with your sibling, I’ve found, is that you don’t have to work very hard on vocal phrasing cuz you’re already kind of wired the same way. After the show lots of people were telling us we should record our version of Bobcaygeon and we finally got around to doing it, 3 years later.
“The Hip were my first show, my dad took me to see the Day for Night tour in 1995, I was 11 years old, it was definitely one of the first, ‘I wanna do that!’ moments in my life. Mariel is the younger sibling so discovered the Hip by stealing away with the albums I’d leave lying around my bedroom floor. We’ve both seen them countless times live and they’re a huge reason we both decided to chase after this music thing.”

In addition to releasing their rendition of “Bobcaygeon”, Mariel and Tim will be performing together as ‘The Buckleys’ throughout Alberta this December. They’ll each be selecting songs from their respective catalogues. Full tour dates can be found below.
MORE ABOUT MARIEL BUCKLEY
Born and raised on the prairies in a conservative core, Buckley spent most of her youth playing hockey, getting into trouble and writing it all down. After dabbling in guitar for near a decade, she took up some bar gigs, playing mostly traditional country music. Buckley began writing original music in her early twenties and found a natural comfort in speaking her mind through song. After several years of honing her craft on and off the stage, she began seeing larger support slots – k.d. Lang notably saying: “this kid has a big future.”
Buckley’s first official release, Driving in the Dark (2018), garnered international press and began solidifying her as part of the roots community in North America. With recognition from No Depression, CBC Music, Wide Open Country and PopMatters; she was building momentum quickly. And now after two-years forced hiatus and a new album, she’s ready to continue being a trail in her own right with the new LP, Everywhere I Used To Be. With a firm grip on the steering wheel and a destination in mind - we’re just happy to be along for the ride.

Hailing from Calgary, Tim started with a trio that gained a fanbase with three albums of material before they split. Then he made his way as a solo artist, writing songs with John Wort Hannamand Don Henry (Ray Charles, Kathy Mattea), to name a few. Working with a well-known Nashville songwriter like Henry kicked his game up a notch; so, he polished his skills and pushed his arrangements to be what they are today. Buckley's influences run from traditional folk to rock to various music movements worldwide, like Laurel Canyon in the 70s or Greenwich NY café days in the 60s, telling the story in detail and embedding it with a message.
This kind of dedication to craft continues to make Buckley's name known across the Canadian provinces and mid-western states, steadily establishing him as a truly prolific and celebrated songwriter with his eye on the world. T.Buckley's 2018 debut, Miles We Put Behind, was a critical success for the gifted songwriter who pushed his creative boundaries by working with Grammy-nominated and multi-genre enthusiast, producer/engineer Howard Bilerman. The slick-yet-measured interpretation of Buckley's tooth and bone songwriting style gave new life to his narratives and earned a Canadian Folk MusicAward nomination. For a young writer, getting such accolades was eye-opening and humbling.
