Take a stroll down a Vancouver street, and see who joins you with the new video from Jordan Klassen for upcoming album single “Baby Moses”, available to watch today courtesy of Clash Music. The song itself is an outwardly beautiful track whose sumptuous, uplifting arrangement conceals some self-lacerating, bared-soul lyrics. “Baby Moses was a song I wrote looking back at my twenties and wishing that I'd known then what I know now,” says Klassen. “Truly Rod Stewart-esque. I wanted to be honest about my disappointment, but also humble enough to not just blame everyone else for my own shortcomings.”

Javelin is an album that rewrites history. Due out February 19 on Nevado Records, these ten songs, among the most confidently and imaginatively arranged Jordan Klassen has ever recorded, engage the past, reassess recollections and impressions, turn failures not into successes but lessons for the future.

Sonically, Javelin is a mixing of ambient and rhythmic elements, from the ebullient African percussion of “St. Fraser” to the heavily reverbed vocals of closer “Smoking Too Long.” Klassen found inspiration—a patron saint, of sorts—in an unlikely figure. “The record is a nod to the ‘90s New Age music that I grew up with,” he says with a slight chuckle. “My mom was really into Enya, and I wanted to explore some of those sounds in a very modern way. I wanted to really embrace ethereality.” It’s not hard to hear echoes of “Orinoco Flow” or “Caribbean Blue” in the soft-focus thrum of “Miles,” even the delicate overlay of instruments on “We Got Married,” even the whispered valedictory of “Smoking Too Long.”

The follow up to 2013’s acclaimed Repentance, the album sees Klassen depart from the eloquently spare folk of its predecessor, adding ambient and rhythmic elements to vivid Technicolor arrangements in what is his most vibrant and vital album to date.

On the recommendation of James Vincent McMorrow Klassen recorded Javelin at Sonic Ranch studio in Tornillo, just outside El Paso in Texas. He produced the album himself and plays almost all the instruments. The songs on Javelin spring from hard experiences—namely, from Klassen’s struggle with depression and his mother’s diagnosis with breast cancer, now thankfully in remission. Despite the fears and despairs that motivated these songs, there is always a kernel of hope illuminating the music from the inside.

Over the past five years on the road as one third of Yukon Blonde, Brandon Wolfe Scott penned notebooks full of playful new-country ditties, purely for fun – writing songs under an alter ego named Dusty Summers. With the band on break between tours in 2013, Scott found himself revisiting those old notebooks and connecting with lyrics that he had once considered ‘a joke’.

Those ideas now make up The Postcard Writer EP, out now on Nevado Records. “I ended up really loving some of the songs. So I decided to salvage them in a way that was more me, you know drop the low country voice that I was putting on and play them more like how I normally would. They were just nice songs, so I reworked the lyrics to make them sound less hokey and more meaningful.”

Touring internationally and receiving a long list of accolades including a JUNO Nomination, two Polaris Music Prize Nominations, and a SiriusXM Indie Win with the BC indie rock trio, exposed Scott to a macrocosm of music and sounds. But what influenced him the most was home, specifically his Grandfather’s home in Vancouver, BC, where he would crash in between tours. There was a lot of cribbage and a lot of country music.

“My Grandfather would just put on the greatest little country records all day long and we would just sit and bull shit about old country guys - like Floyd Cramer who was a great piano player and Sons of the Pioneers and I guess it really came through in my songs.”

Yesterday Toronto’s Charlotte Cornfield finished up a successful four date residency at The Cameron House where she was joined onstage by many friends and guests, including Kevin Drew (Broken Social Scene), Tim Darcy (Ought). Today, she is ready announce that her show is going on the road with a string of tour dates beginning March 3. Full tour dates can be found below.

To help kick off the tour, Cornfield is treating listeners with “Big Volcano, Small Town”, a true ‘on-the-road’ track from her upcoming album, Future Snowbird. "I wrote this song while I was travelling with my friend Adrienne in the Pacific Northwest one summer,” says Cornfield. “We were taking greyhounds and checking out little towns and hanging by the ocean. I remember feeling so nomadic, like I could go anywhere and anything could happen."

While the song itself is picturesque, the recording process behind it wasn’t quite so. "When we recorded ‘Big Volcano, Small Town’ everyone in the band was sick. It was January in Toronto, cold and flu season, and morale wasn't very high. But then we got this beautiful take. There is this blue note that Damon Hankoff played on the piano toward the end of the song that was a total accident, but I think it's the best thing on the record. Pure magic."

On Future Snowbird Cornfield sings clever, heart-wrenching songs in a lived-in, streetwise drawl. Set for release on March 11 via Consonant Records, the album grew from Cornfield’s time living in New York and the background noise of her moments in the city: a formative relationship, a vicious bout of psoriasis, and an overall constellation of ups and downs.

The album was recorded live off the floor at Rooster Studios in Toronto with Cornfield's longtime bandmates Sam Gleason, Damon Hankoff, Kathryn Palumbo, and Sam Rosenberg, and produced and engineered by Don Kerr (Ron Sexsmith, The Rheostatics), with guest performances by Tim Darcy (Ought) and Johnny Spence (Tegan & Sara). The result is Cornfield's strongest statement to date, each song a moodscape all its own.

Recently Charlotte Cornfield completed a residency at the prestigious Banff Centre, where she recorded and collaborated with Brendan Canning, Kevin Drew, and Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene. Aside from her work as a solo artist, Charlotte Cornfield has held down the drum chair for Ben Caplan, Peter Nevins, and Adrian Underhill. She recently began working on a new project with Tim Darcy of Ought, and beyond her own discography she has a vault of recording and performing credits as a drummer and singer with The Provincial Archive, Anais Mitchell, The Reverend John DeLore, and The Keys. Her songs have appeared in films and television shows internationally, and she's shared stages with the likes of Sharon Van Etten, Sun Kil Moon, and Lake Street Dive.
