Dan Mangan is taking the wraps off his new surprise EP, Unmake. Available today via Arts & Crafts, the EP is the Vancouver songwriter’s first solo offering since his two-time JUNO Award winning album Oh Fortune.  Unmake includes new material from Mangan, a Robyn cover, and two reimagined tracks from his latest record, Club Meds. Mangan says the recording “was a really necessary cathartic experience for me. I’d been so into making ‘albums’ for so long that it seemed impossible to create music outside of that structure. In many ways, this was gratuitous play for me, just recording things because they were enjoyable.”

During the studio sessions Mangan was joined by both friends and long-time collaborators. Wintersleep’s Loel Campbell tears up the kit on “Race To The Bottom”, a song in which “various types of people have a slice of the story, but nobody has the whole story,” says Mangan. “It’s about us grasping for a better or simpler time, but it never existed. Either we’re bummed that we missed out on it, or we’re anxious that we’ll miss the moment when it does come. I’ve always been fascinated by nostalgia. I think it’s dangerous. Putting a halo on the past takes you out of the now, and it’s just not realistic. It’s fantasy.”

To close out the EP, Mangan returns to Club Meds tracks “Kitsch” and “Forgetery”, each receiving the redux treatment, during which much of that catharsis was found. “Re-hashing stripped down songs was nice because that album was so purposefully meticulous, and these feel much more rough and live.” For the reinvention of “Forgetery”, Mangan enlistedTegan Quin (Tegan & Sara), which “was a real pleasure because I love her voice and I’ve always admired how her and Sara have managed being mega stars while remaining wonderfully human and intensely engaged with their fans.

Unmake opener “Whistleblower” was one of those tracks that could have been included on Club Meds, but just got lost in the shuffle. Originally recorded in 6/8, this time around “we put it in 4/4 and reduced it to my acoustic and Gord Grdina’selectric noise-washes, which seemed to give it a classic protest song kind of vibe within a modern context."

For the solo cover song on the recording Mangan tackles Robyn’s “Hang With Me”. “She has an ability to match hooky dance pop songs with intelligent lyricism and her personality is so vivid within the songs,” he says. “On first listen, it seems the singer is a tad self-involved, dictating if and how people can ‘hang with them’, but I think the deeper message in the song is the fear of being open and vulnerable enough to just let oneself get hurt in the pursuit of love and singing about that is, strangely… vulnerable.”

Dan Mangan is a two-time JUNO Award winning and two-time Polaris Music Prize listed musician and songwriter. He lives in Vancouver, British Columbia with his wife and son. With Jesse Zubot, he scored Hector And The Search For Happiness, a feature film starring Simon Pegg.

Mangan has toured extensively in North America, Europe and Australia. He recently released his fourth LP, Club Meds, to much critical acclaim, under the moniker Dan Mangan + Blacksmith. Blacksmith refers to long-time collaborators Gord Grdina, John Walsh, Kenton Loewen, and often JP Carter, Jesse Zubot, and Tyson Naylor.

Jean-Michel Blais is a 31 year-old pianist from the province of Quebec. His enchanting instrumental compositions pair the melodic pop sensibilities of Ameìlie-era Yann Tiersen and Arts & Crafts alumni Chilly Gonzales with the breathtaking technical skill of classical minimalists like Philip Glass and Erik Satie. Il is his debut album of original compositions.

Blais grew up in a rural French Catholic town in Quebec bereft of Culture save for a giant encyclopedia he’d read feverishly as a child. At age 9, Blais began tinkering and improvising on his family’s organ and at age 11 he started to write original compositions and began taking piano lessons. A natural talent, by 17 he was invited to the Trois-Rivieres Music Conservatory and began training as a classical pianist. However, Blais was entering the throes of teenage rebellion and found the constraints of formal training a cumbersome rigid structure. Gravitating towards experimentation, Blais wasn’t content to be told how to play, and instructed to not improvise or compose.

A few years later, he attracted the attention of famed playwright and director, Robert Lepage, who introduced Blais to a who’s-who of Quebec’s entertainment industry. With no particular plan for a music career, he quickly took a step back and decided it was time for more explorations.

He moved to Europe in his mid-twenties, living in Berlin, and spent six months in South America. During that time he’d intermittently compose music with long gaps of not even touching a piano. Blais finally settled in Montreal where he rediscovered his love for composing and performing which caught the ear of Arts & Crafts. Written and recorded at home over two years by improvising every day, Jean-Michel Blais’ debut album, Il, is now set to be released.

Adam Baldwin is perhaps best known as a member of Matt Mays’ band, however the Dartmouth based musician has already been awarded Nova Scotia Music Week’s Male Artist Recording Of The Year on the back of his 2013 solo EP. Today the songwriter is celebrating the release of his first LP, No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five), by streaming the entire album ahead of its release date courtesy of Exclaim!.

STREAM NO TELLING WHEN (PRECISELY NINETEEN EIGHTY-FIVE) HERE VIA EXCLAIM!

Set for release on June 24 via Sonic Records the album was produced by Liam O’Neil (The Stills, Metric) the album also features the talents of Josh Trager (Sam Roberts Band), Brian Murphy (Alvvays), and Leah Fay (July Talk). The title track and first song “No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five)” describes events in New York City in 1985, the year before Adam was born, and suggests how, thirty years on, not a lot in our culture has really changed. A particular unnamed real-estate developer, reality TV star, and politician personifies this idea.

The first single “Daylight” was inspired by the lead up to the last federal election in Canada, occurring during the recording sessions. “It’s a song about both the unity and division we felt as a country,” says Baldwin. “It’s a song that should remind us that this change was spurred by a desire for a different direction, and that while our course appears to have changed, we have to demand that it continue to do so.

“Anytime” and “Sparrow Song”, both featuring backup vocals from Leah Fay, loosely form a two act play and the centre piece of the album. In “Anytime” Adam sings about young love and all the hopes and fears that come with that, while “Sparrow Song” describes those fears when they become reality.

“Rehtaeh” is about the systemic failures that led to the death of Rehtaeh Parsons in 2013 and is, as Adam puts it “maybe the most important song I'll ever write.” The album closes with “Living Proof”, a song about the Canadian Dream, and how as Adam points out, “the dream is elusive because it isn't made available to everyone. It can't be attained by just anyone.”
