NOMINATED FOR TWO CANADIAN FOLK MUSIC AWARDS

NATIONAL TOUR DATES WITH JOEY LANDRETH BEGIN OCTOBER 13 - TICKETS ON SALE NOW

Today, Donovan Woods is releasing They Are Going Away, the follow up EP to his Polaris Music Prize long-listed album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled. And to celebrate, Woods is revealing the new lyric video for EP track “What They Mean” via Pop Matters. Woods wrote the song with Charles Kelley (Lady Antebellum) and songwriter Abe Stoklasa. “Charles had an idea that he wanted to write a song about why they say the word crazy in country songs so often,” says Woods. “Which I thought was a great idea because they do, they say it way too often. We decided to tell the story in a narrative way, explaining to a kid why those overused words get used so much. They’re place-holders for unexplainable feelings of love and loss.”

Donovan Woods’ acclaimed fourth album, Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, was just recently nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards for Contemporary Album Of The Year and English Songwriter Of The Year. However, the songwriting sessions had a few tracks that didn’t make the full LP, but just couldn’t stay on the cutting room floor either. And as such, Woods is releasing those tracks They Are Going Away.

The EP is made available through Woods’ own label Meant Well and with thanks to Canada’s historic Massey Hall, is set for digital release today. On it, there’s a distinct sense of motion throughout the narratives.“It’ll Work Itself Out” is a song about someone who is traveling furiously to outrun problems while “Drove Through Town” provides a backdrop for the big issues, from living up to expectations to escaping a dead-end relationship.

Woods, who is an exceptional acoustic guitarist in his own right, says these songs didn’t make the track listing for Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled because he didn’t want to rush the lyrics or force them to be finished. A fourth selection, “Empty Rooms” is about moving on from a relationship — when that’s not such a bad thing. Although it’s new, Woods felt it was a comfortable fit.

With the release of Hard Settle, Ain’t Troubled, the critics chimed in immediately. The Globe And Mail called it “a gentle, honest collection of melancholic observations and hushed tunefulness,” while NOW Magazine claimed the album was full of “wistful songs that tug at the heartstrings of anyone who's had feelings about partners, ex-partners, where you're from, where you shouldn't have gone.” Singles, “On The Nights You Stay Home”, and “What Kind Of Love Is That” spent a few weeks on the CBC Radio 2 Top 20 charts, with latter reaching #1.

After a cross-Canada tour earlier this year with Matt Andersen and festival and club appearances all over North America, Donovan Woods is preparing to head back out on the road for a run of Canadian headline dates. Joining him will be Joey Landreth from the JUNO-Award winning band The Bros. Landreth. The tour begins October 13 and all dates are listed below.

Today, Jean-Michel Blais shares a new composition for the deluxe edition of his debut album Il. The song, “pour Johanne”, was written following the tragic passing of a friend’s mother. “My friend Eric wrote the following as an artist statement for his visual exhibition about loss and absence,” says Jean-Michel. “It's certainly raw, though real and true.”

On a freezing Sunday morning of March, my mother Johanne died in a car accident. Evidence suggests that the young intoxicated driver who provoked the head-on crash committed suicide. His pain became ours.

“Speechless in front of my friend's suffering, I could only respond in the language of music. That's how 'pour Johanne' came out through me.”

The expanded release, featuring two additional songs from the original recording sessions, follows a nomination for the esteemed Polaris Music Prize.

Since the April release of Il, Blais’ single “Nostos” has been streamed over 6 million times, hitting #1 on Hype Machine’s Popular chart twice, and #14 on Spotify’s Global Viral chart. He participated in Nils Frahm’s International Piano Day with a performance for CBC and completed a month-long residency at the Art Gallery of Ontario. More about Jean-Michel Blais:

Jean-Michel Blais is a 31 year-old pianist from Montreal, Canada. His enchanting instrumental compositions pair the melodic pop sensibilities of Amélie-era Yann Tiersen and Arts & Crafts alumni Chilly Gonzales with the breathtaking technical skill of classical minimalists like Philip Glass and Erik Satie.

Blais grew up in a rural French Catholic town in Quebec absent of Culture save for a giant Encyclopedia he’d read feverishly as a child. At age 9, Blais began tinkering on his family’s organ, improvisation, and at age 11 started to write original compositions and taking piano lessons. A natural talent, by 17 he was invited to the Trois-Rivieres Music Conservatory and began training as a classical pianist. However, Blais was entering the throes of teenage rebellion and found the constraints of formal training cumbersome rigid structure. Gravitating towards experimentation, Blais wasn’t content to be told how to play, and not to improvise or compose.

A few years later, he attracted the attention of famed playwright and director, Robert Lepage, who introduced Blais to the who’s who of Quebec’s entertainment industry. With no particular plan for a music career, he quickly took a step back and decided it was time for more explorations.

He moved to Europe in his mid-20s living in Berlin and spent six months in South America. During that time he’d intermittently compose music with long gaps of not even touching a piano. Blais finally settled in Montreal where he rediscovered his love for composing and performing which caught the ear of Arts & Crafts. Written and recorded at home over two years by improvising every day, Jean-Michel Blais’ debut album, Il, was released on April 8th 2016.
