“a modern evolution of surf rock, with trance-inducing jangly guitar chords, Walrus just might be your next favourite group” CBC Music

“sweet and loose … pulls a lot of tricks from the Beatles’ late-60s psychedelia, but filters it through a 90s-indebted love of six-string heaviness” NOW

Earlier this month, Halifax psych-rockers Walrus were nominated for a Music Nova Scotia Award for Alternative Recording Of The Year, last week they begun their cross Canada tour dates with Billy Moon, and today and are sharing their video for “Feels”.

Recorded by Jeff Miller at The Bus Stop Theatre in Halifax, “we wanted to do our take on an old Grey Whistle Test style video,” says Walrus. The band recorded the video in the middle of a run of shows with Matt Mays, so when filming started they were all in “pretty rough condition the morning of. You’ll notice Justin’s live at the Shore Club t-shirt…”

Walrus spent much of the summer on tour with the likes of Besnard Lakes, Wintersleep, Evening Hymns, Alex Calder, Matt Mays, and Plants & Animals, stopping along the way at Osheaga, Supercrawl, and many more. Not a band that likes to rest for very long, Walrus are now headed west across Canada with Billy Moon. Full tour dates can be found below.

The band released their latest EP, Goodbye Something, on Dan Mangan’s Madic Records. The recording channels their inner psychedelia with songs that range from trance to surf. Exclaim! writes that “the band somehow mix gentle, Brian Wilson vocal melodies and orchestrations with out-of-the-blue punk thrash parts that keep listeners guessing. The high, winsome vocals and chiming 12-string Rickenbacker certainly conjured late '60s cloudy folk-pop, but the rest of the band infused the songs with sharp edges.” Their music will adhere to all levels of inebriation or consciousness. Walrus takes you swiftly into a dream you'll find yourself never wanting to wake up from.

Adam Baldwin is perhaps best known as a member of Matt Mays’ band, however the Dartmouth based musician has already been awarded Nova Scotia Music Week’s Male Artist Recording Of The Year on the back of his 2013 solo EP. His first LP, No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five), is out now via Sonic Records. The album was produced by Liam O’Neil (The Stills, Metric) the album also features the talents of Josh Trager (Sam Roberts Band), Brian Murphy (Alvvays), and Leah Fay (July Talk).

The first single from Adam Baldwin’s debut LP, “Daylight” was inspired by the lead up to the last federal election in Canada, occurring during the recording sessions. “It’s a song about both the unity and division we felt as a country,” says Baldwin. “It’s a song that should remind us that this change was spurred by a desire for a different direction, and that while our course appears to have changed, we have to demand that it continue to do so.”

The title track and first song “No Telling When (Precisely Nineteen Eighty-Five)” describes events in New York City in 1985, the year before Adam was born, and suggests how, thirty years on, not a lot in our culture has really changed. A particular unnamed real-estate developer, reality TV star, and politician personifies this idea.

“Anytime” and “Sparrow Song”, both featuring backup vocals from Leah Fay, loosely form a two act play and the centre piece of the album. In “Anytime” Adam sings about young love and all the hopes and fears that come with that, while “Sparrow Song” describes those fears when they become reality.

“Rehtaeh” is about the systemic failures that led to the death of Rehtaeh Parsons in 2013 and is, as Adam puts it “maybe the most important song I'll ever write.” The album closes with “Living Proof”, a song about the Canadian Dream, and how as Adam points out, “the dream is elusive because it isn't made available to everyone. It can't be attained by just anyone.”

Royal Canoe’s latest album, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit, was released last week via Nevado Records and the reviewers are starting to chime in. BeatRoute claims that the magic “lies in the band’s ability to make infectious tunes without compromising their desire to boldly tinker,” while the Winnipeg Free Press called it “funky, daring and often surprising...No two tracks sound the same and each contains its own little universe.” Exclaim! also called it “orchestral, theatrical, experimental...Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit presents a sound all their own that's distinct and, for the most part, unparalleled.”

The day the album hit the shelves the Winnipeg sextet took to the road for lengthy string of tour dates across North America. To help with the send off Royal Canoe are revealing the new lyric video for album cut “Bicycle”, animated by Bill Acheson and Matea Radic. “They identified that it was written from a child's perspective, so we pitched back the idea of a children's storybook theme with simple line drawings based on our interpretation of the lyrics,” says Acheson.

After two years of writing and recording between tours, Something Got Lost Between Here And The Orbit surfaced with a unique and intensified voice. It was co-produced and mixed by Ben Allen (Gnarls Barkley, Animal Collective, Deerhunter), who concentrated their sound-crafting attention on two fundamental elements: drums and vocals. Royal Canoe has always had an intensively rhythmic heart and that is more the case than ever. Their lyrics grow organically out of an addictive percussive flow and the unique topography of each track. Reinforcing their vocal and percussive core allowed them to be more adventurous with experimentation; more determined in their ongoing pursuit of the elusive musicality that can be found in collisions between digital and analogue worlds. In addition to their their usual buffet of synthesizers, effects pedals and homemade samples, late nights lead to to rabbit-holes of attaching contact mics to water bottles to play them like percussion instruments and convoluting synths through beluga whale field recordings.

Almost three years have passed since the release of Royal Canoe’s sophomore album Today We're Believers. Those years were full. The band played 200 shows, which included tours with the likes of Alt J and Bombay Bicycle Club, and stops at major festivals like Bonaroo, Iceland Airwaves, and Osheaga. The hard work paid off; Today We're Believers received critical acclaim, was nominated for Alternative Album of the Year at the JUNOs, and won Best Independent Album at the Western Canadian Music Awards.
