Austra, the recording project led by vocalist and producer Katie Stelmanis, is pleased to announce Future Politics, the third full length in their discography, due out January 20 via Pink Fizz Records.

Accompanying today’s announcement is a video for first single “Utopia”. Directed by THAT GO (Chairlift, Lapsley, Father John Misty), the video stars Stelmanis, held hostage in an icy, modern apartment by an insidiously sinister device.

"Katie came into the video project with a lot of ideas about the future,” says THAT GO. “We discussed everything from food trends to Star Trek: The Next Generation. The video is more near-future than distant-future, with recognizable technology and modern protein sources.”

Future Politics, Austra’s third and most ambitious album to date, calls for radical hope, “a commitment to replace the approaching dystopia,” says Katie Stelmanis, who leads Austra with the support of Maya Postepski (Princess Century, TR/ST), Dorian Wolf, and Ryan Wonsiak. “Not just hope in the future, but the idea that everyone is required to help write it, and the boundaries of what it can look like are both fascinating and endless. It’s not about ‘being political’, it’s about reaching beyond boundaries, in every single field.”

Future Politics is a collection of urgent, but disciplined anthems for dancefloor and headphones, asks each of us to remember that apocalypse is not an inevitability, but the product of human decision-making. It aims for a world without borders, where human compassion and curiosity drive technological innovation rather than profit, where the necessity of labor is replaced with time for creativity and personal growth, and the terror and destruction wrought by colonialism and white supremacy is recognized as a dark age in human history. The album is radicalism distilled: to galvanic beats, gorgeous, kinetic melodies, and the vulnerable majesty of Stelmanis’s voice.

Inspired by her time living in two cities – Montreal and Mexico City – and propelled by economic and philosophical texts she was reading throughout the album’s creation, Stelmanis was driven to face the world’s ailments with positivity, purpose, and engagement, rather than detachment or despair. Inspiration also came from European club culture – Objekt, Peter Van Hoesen, Lena Willikens, and ‘90s legends like Massive Attack; in all, artists who understand the dancefloor as a source of radical ideas and radical joy.

Change, Rebecca Solnit (author, activist, environmentalist and editor at Harper’s Magazine) writes, comes from “writers, scholars, public intellectuals, social activists, and participants in social media” – also “artists, club scenes, parties, teenagers, ghettos,” says Stelmanis. “Every single person’s idea about the future is valid and relevant, especially the freaks and the queers and the outsiders.”

Future Politics is available to pre-order now on limited edition deluxe coloured vinyl with exclusive signed art print, CD, and digital download.

MOBY & THE VOID PACIFIC CHOIR REVEAL NEW VIDEO

THESE SYSTEMS ARE FAILING OUT NOW VIA ARTS & CRAFTS

ANIMATOR STEVE CUTTS' LIGHTHEARTED LOOK AT THE COLLAPSE OF OUR SPECIES AND SOCIETY

Taking inspiration from Max Fleischer’s iconic animation of the 1930’s, Moby & The Void Pacific Choir (in collaboration with Steve Cutts) today released the music video for “Are You Lost in the World Like Me?”, a lighthearted look at alienation, modern dystopian living, and the collapse of our species.

The video was directed and animated by critically-acclaimed illustrator Steve Cutts who says, “For me the video is about our increasing dependence on technology and about human interaction today, or a certain lack of it. It focuses on the way tech is changing us – how we have become desensitized.”

Moby adds, “A few years ago I saw Steve Cutts' ‘Man’ video and was amazed and blown away. I did some internet sleuthing and found his e-mail address and humbly asked him to make a video for me. And, lucky me, he agreed. The video he made for ‘Are You Lost in the World Like Me?’ is without question one of the best videos that's ever been made for one of my songs.”

Currently, Sam Cash is halfway through a two week Independent Music Residency at the Banff Centre, and the effects of the songwriting retreat are already showing. “At certain points in the last few months, I have felt a bit deflated with the whole ‘music career’ thing – feeling that the ambition that had once driven me was starting to slip away, and I was beginning to lose sight of why I loved writing and performing songs in the first place,” says Cash. “It’s easy to get caught up in your own head, and forget what the most important parts about creating are. I think everyone is guilty of giving way to their insecurities, and I have had a particularly rough bout of it over the past little while.”

However, after week one and with the help of Brendan Canning (Broken Social Scene), Charles Spearin (Broken Social Scene), Kathleen Edwards, Nyles Spencer (The Tragically Hip), and Graham Lessard (Kevin Drew, Timber Timbre) at the Banff Centre, Cash finds himself both creatively challenged and rewarded. “I have really been pushed to do better every day – never settling on a lyric, or a melody, or a chord progression, but always going a few percent further to find those magic moments,” he says. “The songs I’ve been writing up here have been the most fruitful writing and recording experiences of my short career. We are given the dream team up here, and I feel very fortunate that i get to have the opportunity to watch how how these great artists work in and out of the studio. This has truly been inspiring, and it has given me a newfound excitement to start work on the new record – in whatever form that may take.“

Sam Cash & The Romantic Dogs spent much of the summer on tour with the likes of July Talk, Zeus, Sam Roberts, Arkells and more, however they’re sticking close to home for the winter. In fact, they’ll call The Rivoli home for three nights, November 11 and 25, and December 9 for a cozy residency. “This will be a great night to stretch out our catalogue, and get familiar with some classic covers,” says Cash. “We used to do Saturday’s at the Cameron House, and they used to be real highlights of the week for everyone involved. We wanted to bring back that same feeling of community and camaraderie, but wanted to see how it would work at a venue that traditionally doesn’t normally have weekend residencies.”

And on December 22, Cash will host the third annual Cover Me Impressed show at Lee’s Palace. The past two years of this fundraising night have featured Jim Cuddy, July Talk, Brendan Canning, The Elwins, Ian Blurton, Fast Romantics, and many others. Who knows who will grace the stage this year? “These are the hardest and most rewarding shows we’ve ever done,” says Cash. “It always comes together pretty last minute, and we are essentially learning 40 new covers, usually with less than a month to go, every time. As a result, they are often the most fun shows we have. It feels so great to be able to do our small part to help.”

Canned food donations from the night will go to The Daily Bread Food Bank, while cash donations will benefit SKETCH Working Arts. “I wasn’t actually aware of what SKETCH was until we started doing this show, and I think they are doing such good work in the way they connect the healing power of arts with so many of Canada’s homeless and on-the-margin youths. So many musicians and songwriters can attest to the way music has had a positive – if not life altering – effect on them. I think the reason these nights are so amazing and memorable, is the huge amount of love and respect in the room, from the audience, to the various musicians who have donated their time and talent to this amazing, heart warming night.”
