Alejandra Ribera has been writing about the unexpected places we find light since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album La boca. In her sophomore release This Island, the award-winning songwriter continues her exploration of luminescence - this time leaving the depths of mythological waters and delving firmly into the experience of the human heart. She cites some unlikely influences as inspiring her approach to this recording – a speech by actress Tilda Swinton at the Rothko Chapel, a documentary about performance artist Marina Abramović and studying movement in Paris with one of Pina Bausch’s earliest devotees.

“There is this infinite potential that lies in that moment between suspension and release,” says Ribera. “I wanted to put a sonic microscope on that moment and invite the listener into that intimate space normally reserved for those who create the music.”

“Higher” continues the themes of intimate and infinite. The song “was based on a very funny story that Billy Connolly once told about his theory on God, the nucleus, and the solar system. He says we’re looking at the whole thing through the wrong end of the telescope. In the end he finds out one of the women he’s been talking to is a nun. It’s sort of a joyful, light-hearted song about faith.”

Due out on January 27 via Pheromone Recordings, This Island was recorded at a studio in rural Ontario where she and the band lived and recorded in the depths of winter. “Thirty-five centimetres of snow fell on our first night. I’d often be singing facing the lake which was completely frozen over through the window.” That vast Canadian landscape is audible from the opening track and woven throughout much of the album. Reminiscent of early Damien Rice in its delicate and spacious arrangements we also hear the influence of contemporaries like Rufus Wainwright and Fiona Apple in This Island’s sophisticated melodies.

Ribera's reputation for raw and emotive vocals has brought repeated comparisons to Tom Waits from the critics over the years. In “Blood Moon Rising” she harnesses that palpable intensity right to the hem with an almost athletic ability that leaves hairs standing on end.

This Island also brings us Ribera’s most accessible and up-tempo songwriting to date, perhaps the feature that most distinguishes it from her previous work. “After my first year of living in France I found myself writing little hymns of gratitude and hearing anthem-like choruses in my head. I think it was a subconscious way of lifting my own spirits when I was feeling homesick. When it came time to record those songs I wanted to have as much fun as possible. Exploit the joy! That’s why I asked Bryden Baird (Feist) to write the horn arrangements – he has this magic touch, it makes you grin.”

“Carry Me,” “Will Not Drown,” and “Led Me To You” (which runs seven verses deep and reads rather like a Leonard Cohen poem set to a bluegrass jam) are probably the best examples of this new-found unabashed levity. And then there are her trademark heart-breaking lyrics that cut to the quick with love songs like “The Undertow” and “Undeclared War” – ‘The words you left metastasized, I cannot breath my hands are tied…’ swelling and subsiding in lush waves of strings, acoustic guitars and vocal harmonies.

There’s a timeless approach to the production which Ribera entrusted mixer Trina Shoemaker (Sheryl Crow) and engineer L. Stu Young (Prince) to help her achieve. “I wanted to make a record that sounded classic, simple and unencumbered by the production trends of the day. I knew it would take courage to strip everything down and so I needed a very particular team that would push me every step of the way.” Equal parts subtle and nourishing, all these elements were carefully crafted with her long time collaborators and Montreal-based band Jean-Sebastien Williams and Cédric Dind-Lavoie. With their talent in tow Ribera has created This Island, a place she invites us to visit, to dream and to celebrate that light that she is seeking wherever she goes.

Three years ago, the world got a taste of PUP’s humble beginnings in their Juno Award-nominated video for “Guilt Trip”. While the story itself was fictional, the success that came to the band after the video’s release in 2014 was anything but. Today, the saga continues with their new video for “Sleep In The Heat”, starring Finn Wolfhard (Stranger Things) returning in his role as a young Stefan Babcock. The song appears off their latest album, The Dream Is Over, which was short-listed for the Polaris Music Prize.

Directed by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux, “Sleep In The Heat” follows a young PUP on tour and the unlikely animal companion they meet along the way. The video also features glimpses of each member’s four-legged friends including Norman, the chameleon star of PUP’s “Mabu” video.

“‘Sleep In The Heat’ is a song about my chameleon Norman, who passed away while we were writing this record,” explains singer/guitarist Stefan Babcock. “Jeremy was the one who thought we should make a video for this song. He has this really weird one-eyed grumpy cat that he loves a lot, and I guess the song got him thinking about what it's going to be like when she's gone. Losing a friend is something so many of us have had to deal with, which is why I think this video is so powerful.”

The video premiered today via New York Magazine’s Vulture, who asked Wolfhard who asked about his involvement and inspiration in the video. “When I first listened to the song I was like, ‘Oh, this is super-dark, maybe about some girlfriend overdosing on heroin, cooped up in a bedroom or something,’” says Wolfhard. “I was filming a movie in Toronto and we were having ramen together – me, all the PUP guys, my mom, and Jeremy – and we were talking about the song. This was before they were planning to do a video for it. I said, ‘Do you guys want to do a ‘Guilt Trip part two?’’ jokingly. They said, ‘Yeah, we really want to.’ I told them ‘Sleep in the Heat’ is one of my favorite tracks on the album and asked Stefan what it was about, if it was about a girlfriend passing away, and he was like, ‘Nah, it’s just about my chameleon.’ It was surprising. It’s pretty awesome that you can write a heartfelt song about your little chameleon.”

Babcock adds, “Big shoutouts to the little PUPs in this video, too - watching them bond and then say goodbye to that dog is one of the most heartwarming and heartbreaking things I can imagine. RIP all of our little friends. We miss you.”

Netflix’s Stranger Things star Finn Wolfhard championed PUP at this year’s Polaris Music Prize Gala Awards show at which PUP’s album The Dream Is Over was short-listed for the prize. Watch him praise the band at the gala in the video below.

Named for the first thing doctors told Babcock after a recent examination of his damaged vocal chords, The Dream Is Over finds PUP as confident and as in tune with each other as they’ve ever been. It’s the sound of a band not just surviving the storm, but thriving in it. If anything, The Dream Is Over is visible, visceral proof that the dream is, in fact, very much alive.

Today, BADBADNOTGOOD are sharing the video for "Lavender" from this year's critically-acclaimed album IV via Nerdist. The Fantavious Fritz-directed visual for "Lavender" finds the band held captive and forced to play a deadly game of Dungeons & Dragons. The video, which features a cameo by track collaborator Kaytranada, is the perfect accompaniment to the dark and enigmatic song.

The release of the video comes as BADBADNOTGOOD approaches the close of a big year for the band -- playing Coachella for the second year in a row, making their Japanese debut at this year's Summer Sonic and releasing an album that saw BADBADNOTGOOD exploring new sonic terrain and expanding their songwriting to include collaborators such as Future Islands' Samuel T. Herring, newcomer Charlotte Day Wilson, Arcade Fire and Bon Iver collaborator Colin Stetson, Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins, and Polaris Music Prize winning producer Kaytranada.

About BADBADNOTGOOD:

Like musical theatre and scripted television, jazz and hip-hop are uniquely, undeniably North American art forms. Though the latter genre was born out of funk and disco in the late 1970s, many of its landmark artists embody the ethos of jazz: loose, visceral, instinctive. Some hip-hop acts--A Tribe Called Quest, or more recently Kendrick Lamar--have successfully repurposed jazz, but the older genre has seldom made successful inroads into new generations of rap fans. And that's what makes BADBADNOTGOOD, the four-piece, Toronto-bred jazz outfit that has melded jazz and instrumental hip-hop into something elusive, something altogether their own, so unique.

On their latest full-length effort, IV, BBNG decide to expand their universe, which was already one of the most compelling, labyrinthine worlds in pop music today. Saxophonist Leland Whitty, a long-time collaborator, joins Chester Hansen, Matthew Tavares, and Alexander Sowinski on a full-time basis; for the first time, guest vocalists are welcomed into the fold. Some artists find collaboration stressful and cluttering, but BBNG simply seems freer to chase down creative rabbit holes than ever before.

The effect is apparent immediately. See "Lavender," a collaboration with the Montreal-based producer Kaytranada, which pairs delicate, skittering production with a punishing low end. Or take the virtuosic closer, which underscores superb performances by Whitty and Tavares with a grande swell of strings. On "Hyssop of Love," upstart Chicago rapper Mick Jenkins moves languidly, stretching out taunts ("I heard your plug was drrrrry") before he snaps upright ("Never needed no dollars to prove worth"). The result is not just BBNG's most expansive, most dynamic effort to date, but their best. Lest anyone think the group is only concerned with blurring genre lines, the title track alone is enough to ensure the most discerning jazz purists will have to respect BBNG's technical chops.

IV is a master class in mood. The opening three-song suite ("And That, Too.," "Speaking Gently," and the Samuel T. Herring-assisted "Time Moves Slow") is a slow, slinking creep, like moving uneasily through an abandoned house. And while BBNG explores different tones on subsequent tracks, that feeling--the search, the push for the unknown--is the prevailing theme. "Chompy's Paradise" is peaceful and serene, but ends on an uncertain note, unresolved. Like most great artists before them, the quartet understands that it's more important to raise questions than to answer them.
